Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

OK here's a hint: We will introduce a product that will NOT obsolete the Odyssey7 or Odyssey7Q. In fact, we believe that most Odyssey owners as well as a lot of other people will want to own this.

Have fun with that one!! :-D
The mind boggles with possibilities.... I guess I'll have to wait and keep a bit of EOY excess available just in case!

The Odyssey7Q has a lot of tricks up its sleeves that we have not yet revealed. Convergent Design products are not designed to be "this year's" product. We make devices for the long haul that are expected to be useful tools for our clients for years. We strongly believe that this is the way to best serve the community and grow as a company.

I appreciate your concern for Convergent Design. We are gettin' it done and we have more tricks in our bag. The Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7 have long lives ahead of them. Look for some fun announcements soon, and some surprises come early April that should make y'all happy! ;-)

XAVC would be good. 4K 12bit Raw would be amazing. Here's to dreaming.

i wonder is it possible to record 8 bit 4:4:4 from sony FS100 with 7Q? if so, is it a payed option ? if its available already i wonder if anyone tried it yet?

Regards

I've had good time with OD7Q about a month now and yes this is very good monitor for sure.

like many people says that recording functionary for FS700 is very limited with current firmware, only 2Kraw CinemaDNG and 1080P DPX. however it has very accurate monitor for serious shooting session, LUT and decent waveform / RGB parade help us for S-Log2, no more guessing.

wish we will have nice firmware update for upcoming 4K and compressed 1080P recording.

So cryptic! What could it be? doesn't the 7Q already do everything? Please just tell us so we can plan to buy it instead of unknowingly buying some other worse product first! :)

hi,
i'd like to buy the Q7.. can you help me to make the correct order?
My list:
- CD 7Q
- plate for Sony batteries
- SSD
- 3F SDI cable (it's not in the box right?)
- arm for put the 7Q on FS700 (it's not in the box right?)

..and than updates... :)

it's all? thank you!

Mitch-

how soon might we expect the rental program to kick in? I recently had a job that was calling for Arri raw and would've loved to offer my 7Q for rental.
also, when might we expect the updated timeline? you've certainly picqued my curiosity with the yet to be announced "product" or "feature..." thanks.

Hmm Gees... Since you say that it won't obsolete the Odyssey I would place my bets on an EVF since you've already got the nice screen technology and all of your nice features already figured out. It wouldn't take too much effort for you guys to put that tech in a smaller format right? 1+1=2... :P

Don't worry, it's such a cool new concept that I don't think there is a worse version of it around.

Your list is a good one. I would suggest you consider more than a single SSD, as you will want something to record to while you download the other. I would also suggest buying a second SDI cable, if only in case you damage the first one.

There are many ways one might choose to mount the Odyssey7Q, so we leave that up to you. A Noga arm (aka Magic Arm) is a good one, as are many other such products from companies such as Zacuto, Wooden Camera, Chrosziel and others. To stick it on top of an FS700 I've been using a Manfrotto 492LCD ball head, which is pretty heavy duty and works great.

Sorry about that. It should be very soon. We've been working on the website interface and I'm told it's nearly ready.

The status update should be in the next day or two as we hash out a few details.

Keep the guesses coming, but I won't tell who's right or wrong. You'll never get it all!

Hmm I guess/hope a revolutionary new camera profiling/matching/painting system for building 7Q/CDL compatible LUTs? Boosts the strengths of the 7Q (LUTs, RAW access) to the point where it becomes the great equalizer among cameras so you finally can really make them all look the same and as good as possible or truly see where they fall short by eliminating processing and gamma/color differences.

Sounds kinda cool. Also sounds like you're kinda describing ACES workflow.

As it's Christmas, here's what I'd like

A compact version of the Odyssey, perhaps 5" oLED, SSD drives stacked back to back to keep the overall profile neat and tidy, capable of reading and recording the same formats, battery attachments on the back. Basically a compact self contained unit that could be rigged into small and awkward spaces, have a view finder attached to the front to make into an EVF or throw into a dive housing and use as an external monitor/recorder for your camera when filming underwater.

Since we're playing a guessing game - I'm going for some form of follow focus working via the 7Q: touch the screen and the camera resolves on that point, via a lens motor/interface unit.

Heh true, haven't used ACES yet myself, but I was thinking something that doesn't leave camera/display profiling up to manufacturers or 3rd parties that makes it very accessible on set. Perhaps a hatdware device that goes well with the LUT building software CD may release. From your response, though, I guess that's not it :P
