Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Hey Mitch,

Can we hope to get some compressed codecs by mid-month perhaps?

Bear in mind that HD (1080) compressed codec direct from FS700 will only be 8 bit 422 an improvement for sure, the same quality you can get right now from a NanoFlash. So for a while here the NF is a great solution along with the O7Q as a monitor/WF and soon other scopes as well.

It is not until the 4K down-converted compressed codec is available we move into the 12bit realm, and that should be a big improvement. And I don't think that will be until Q1 2014.

Please correct me if I am wrong, Mitch or Dan.

True but even an 8-bit compressed codec into the 7q would be highly welcome. Don't want to have to rent another recorder just to shoot on this thing.

Let's just see what we can make happen when, hmmn? ;-)

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for being so responsive!

Do your current plans include the 12 bit 444 option for the popular unannounced codec?

I have another question that I've had some trouble getting answered. In addition to shooting with various F cameras I also shoot with an FS100. Sony originally said the FS100 could export a 444 signal over HDMI. Being an expert an all things Sony I'm hoping you can confirm if this is the case. If this is true can the Odyssey 7/7Q capture the 444 signal?

Thanks again!
Gary

Yes on question one. I'll have to check on question two.

FS100 output is 422 8bit, nothing more.

Sony has always been open about the 8bit issue but are you saying that you have confirmation from an authoritative source that the 444 RGB signal is a padded 422 signal? If so can you please cite your source?

Thanks,
Gary

It is true, Sony said that the FS100 output was 444 RGB over the HDMI. But i've never been in a position to test this.

However the specs on the O7Q state HDMI up to 422 1080p60, so even if it is 444 it doesn't look like the HDMI in of the O7 would do that

cheers

He Mitch,
I posted this question right before Thanksgiving so it probably got lost:

can I use the Convergent Design 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive for Odyssey Q7 for other SSD recorders like the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Shuttle? Or is it ONLY usable in the Q7?

Thank you.

You can use them in other devices just fine, you'll just have to reformat them to go to them and again to go to the Odyssey. You also must make sure the SSD will physically fit into the other device, as the handle we add to the top increases the SSD's length as well as its width a bit.

Hey Mitch, not sure if there has been much talk about this, but are we able to put the 7Q at the end of a signal chain after an Alphatron EVF? I know you want the signal to be clean (no overlays) and I'm pretty sure the Alphatron keeps it clean, but is the signal still suitable for 4K, 240fps, etc?

There may be times where I use this as a portable client monitor and I would prefer to not run two 25' SDI cables in order to put the EVF at the end of the chain.

the Alphatron won't take the 2k/4k raw signal and would only output 1080, so no, you couldn't put it mid chain of the SDI.

However you can link the Alphatron up seperately via HDMI, if you're not shooting HFR... Added bonus, if you set camera info output to all you'll get the info on the Alphatron but the 2k/4k feed to the Odyssey will still be clean (the info isn't sent over the raw signal).

Damn. That's what I was afraid of. And I assume there is no feasible way to "split" the 3G-SDI signal? I just hate using HDMI. Otherwise I might honestly just buy double the BNC cables and sleeve them together into a little loop-back cable for when I need a mini video village or someone hand-holding the 7Q nearby.

There's only one SDI output, so either it's 2k/4k raw signal, or it's not. If HDMI isn't your thing, and/or you want EVF for the HFR, then it'll have to be loop back...

You're referring to the single SDI output on the FS700, correct? And you're saying that if I put anything in between the FS700 and the 7Q, it will essentially remove the 2K/4K RAW signal. And even a device like this 3G-SDI splitter would strip the RAW signal? I noticed it says compatible signals only go up to 1080p so that is probably the case.

I definitely use the EVF w/ waveform for exposure in HFR, so loopback cable it is. Rats!

EDIT: Sorry for a million and one questions, but I think I remember Mitch mentioning not using any right angle adapters between the FS700 and the 7Q. Is this right? I'm looking to add a female-to-female at the end of the 7Q's OUTPUT to pair my 20" CineCoil cable to the EVF. Since this is only for the EVF, is this usage acceptable?

How are folks managing the use of the O7 in an active shooting environment (hand held)?
All the rigging looks very cumbersome...

Thoughts?

if you set the FS700 to record in 2k raw, then the SDI output will be 2k raw. Put a 3G-SDI splitter (or a BNC t-piece) on the back of it, you'll then have two 2k raw signals. The Odyssey will work fine, provided that the signal hasn't been degraded too much, however the Alphatron will still have a signal that it won't be able to handle.

Right angle adapters, barrel connectors, t-piece connectors, all have an impact on signal strength, the more data you're pushing down the cable the more this matters. This, and the quality of cable, becomes very significant when you start working with 3G-SDI... If I remember correctly, the standard for 3G-SDI dies not allow for right angle connectors as it's regarded too much of a hit on signal quality. With that said, I've run a right angle to a solder connector then on to a 100 ft cable to the 7q, running high frame rates (an underwater shoot) and everything worked fine. Just be aware that the more you add between the 700 and an Odyssey, in terms of cable length and connectors, the more you risk sending a bad signal to the piece of kit that's recording your art!

In terms of looping back from the odyssey to the Alphatron, you're then back to a standard HD signal, so the limitations reduce... Test it, either it will work or it won't, it won't affect what's being recorded, just what you see.
