Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

Any dealers in houston tx getting them?
Not really sure. You can check out list of dealers on our website and contact them directly. If they don't get them one week they might get them the next. And I can't say who has them allocated for clients already, so you really need to talk to the dealers directly.

Hi Mitch
Thank you for all the Info on the 7Q. I have a question regarding an external monitor like my alphatron. I've just received my upgraded FS700 from prime support and I'm now just waiting for my pre ordered 7Q. I was fiddling around with the 4/2K raw option in the camera, but when the output was switch to raw, when of course there was no signal on my alphatron. Is it possible to connect a second hd monitor or EVF to the 7Q and while recording 2/4K on the 7Q, and monitor the signal in HD 1920x1080? Also how is the exact setup on the FS700 to output the 4K signal to the 7Q?
Thank you for your time

The Odyssey7Q currently can record 2K RAW from the FS700, not 4K. This is per our agreement with Sony. One must purchase the FS700 record option off our website in order to activate it in the Odyssey7Q. When set to record FS700 2K RAW, the Odyssey7Q turns the data into 1920x1080 video for our OLED display and for HD-SDI and HDMI output.

Set the FS700 to output 2K RAW, Picture Profile to S-Log2.
Set Odyssey7Q to Sony FS700 in.
Switch on LUT to monitor S-Log2 in REC709 color space (normalized).
Plug your Alphatron into one of the Odyssey7Q SDI Outs or the HDMI Out.

The precise settings are in our manual and an FS700-specific Odyssey7Q Quick Start Guide, both soon to be on our website.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for posting the road map. Much appreciated.

I know you mentioned it was coming, but I did not see it on the road map. Do you have a time frame for the 240fps 4:2:2 10-bit? That will be awesome.

Thanks again.

I believe the official schedule on that one is "absolutely as fast as we can." We are firing on all burners but for certain functions one must complete particular other benchmark functions first. So it's hard to put a timeline on it. Too many variables.

so no 4K at all from the FS700, not even CNG, until Jan 2014 at the earliest, possibly not until April?! That sucks, I thought you guys had 4K working already. Haven't you already posted some footage?

Thanks for the roadmap - really good to get such a thorough breakdown. Can I just get confirmation, will the "Compressed 4K recording and playback, up to 30fps", scheduled for quarter 1 2014, include this recording capability from the FS700?

Yes Mitch, cheers for all the info. One question - when do you think we'll actually see the HD derived from the 4K? This and some form of 4K (ideally raw in the near future, licensing agreements permitting) is my main requirement. Sexy as it is, limited use (for me) until then.

I'm very much looking forward to the monitor and all that functionality, it looks like such an awesome piece of kit that will last me a while. You know sometimes you just have kit thats done 'right' - dedolights for example! Hopefully I'm fair high in the waiting lists here as i ordered it back in June i think!

I have to say i'm a little disappointed with the 4K support or lack of, it doesn't appear on the roadmap til next year, potentially 6 months away? Is that right or will there be some uncompressed 4K as originally proposed prior to that? I would use 4K day one, whether it's compressed or uncompressed.

IMHO It's only the 4K support of interest to most 700 users (whether it's recorded as 4K or down sampled), it sorts out aliasing issues, 1080 scaling quality and gives the full quality of the sensor. Unless someone can convince me otherwise (or i see footage to the contrary) the 2K RAW on the 700/F5/F55 simply isn't good enough for everyday production (unless you're a shallow DOF demon!) and that's because of the way it comes off the sensor, not the way it's being recorded.

Day one i get a really nice monitoring solution but no real benefit over a shuttle recording wise.

I don't know whether there's an internal list of priorities at CD, or whether i'm alone in this, so i'm posting this to demonstrate my belief that the 4K recording is the absolute killer feature here, not 2K RAW. I think when people work with scaled 4K it will open eyes as to what this little cam can do...

just me?

cheers
Paul

I dunno, I think 2K looked pretty good from what I saw, even if it's no 4K and it does have an aliasing and noise penalty but for HFR its an easy tradeoff to make. Obviously everyone has different productions and different standards for how much aliasing or noise is too much, though. That said, for non-HFR at 2K, it does seem hard to swallow the extra noise and aliasing coupled with the cumbersome workflow of RAW DNG, but most people won't have to make that trade off since all you have to do is wait 2-5months for 4K and no one even has their 7Q's yet :P

Q1 2014 is less than 2months away :)

Q1 2014 is less than 2months away :)

Or up to 5 months away depending on which part of the quarter :)

I just find 240fps at 2K not a feature that i would imagine most people would use that much. Whereas better quality 24/25/30p is something that *everyone* would benefit from every day.

Ironically in slow mo, edges and aliasing are even more obvious. To capture the 120fps 4K buffered would be super cool IMHO.

As i've said i'll reserve judgement until i see more footage - but everything i've seen, either from the O7 or the Sony solution has issues when things get sharp. Even the noise is aliased (looking at the two brick samples from CD in 2K and 4K). Some of the footage is shot with quite shallow DOF and that hides a lot.

Dunno, maybe it's just me!

I'm really careful not be to throwing a downer on the O7 which i think is perfect.

cheers
Paul
