Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q Status Update

That's a good question -- I'll have to ask our web guys on Monday. I believe you make the purchase strictly in US dollars, so I assume would be the prevailing exchange rate at the time based on how your bank or credit card handles it. I'll have to confirm this.

i did some research - everything downloadable such as software, music, movies etc. is tax free, so i suppose the fs700 codec option will be free of tax and the price will be translated to euros 1 by 1.

Everywhere I look on the internet in Melbourne for the odyessy7q. it is $2799. I think we need 2 SD card which is $1249 each. Damn it is going to be pretty expensive here down under.

Hi Daomay, love your work.
I also couldn't find a cheaper alternative besides proavsolutions in Brisbane (where I Live) but they have been fairly unresponsive to my emails lately. The guy at videoguys says proavsolutions price is so close to wholesale that he would get his ass kicked by his boss if he price matched them, haha.

As for the SSD's you are right about that! There is a MASSIVE price disparity between here and the US, like...criminally so! A 512gb ssd costs $1250ea!!!

My advice to any Australian is to order them from b&h and save literally $450 per drive. I don't know why we're getting quite so gouged, but I sure don't like it and it can only hurt local retailers. The 7q price here makes sense, because after adding gst and customs duty, it costs pretty much $2800 to import anyway.I don't know what the ssd's excuse is.

Hey Mitch,

Do you think we might have better luck ordering from the smaller Convergent dealers? Are you guys going to be democratic about it and every shop is going to get a few units, or are the first batches generally going to the larger/more popular outfits like B&H or Abelcine? I'm dumb and have not pre-ordered yet. I called B&H and they could give me NO information on how long their wait is for the 7Q.

Exciting times! videoguys in Melbourne Australia say I'll probably have to wait 2 months for my pre-order which is fine considering the demand for this great product. One question I'm not sure about is if the SSD media has a similar wait time? If I were to get my 7Q by the end of Decemeber, would I have any issues with ordering the SSD's then and getting them pretty quickly?
We have a large quantity of SSDs in stock and on the way. But if you are already on pre-order for the Odyssey7Q then I would suggest you do the same with your dealer for the SSDs. If we have a sudden run on them I cannot promise where our inventory will be at that time. If you have the recorder on pre-order why not the drives as well?

We try to be as fair and equitable as possible, but that means fair both to the dealers as well as the end-users. If a large dealer has a huge preorder than they will get a bit more allocation because presumably more clients buy from them. We will not exclude any region of the world and we will not go overboard with providing fulfillment to the biggest dealers only.

We are committed to fulfilling our current orders in December. The longer you wait to order the more that date presumably gets pushed back. We anticipate an increase in demand once the Odyssey7Q begins to ship.

Westside AV is a dealer for CD and we have been making custom cables for the NanoFlash and NanoFlash mounting solutions for years.

We are very exited about the Odyssey7Q and its small brother 7, we are receiving our first units this week for pre orders.

We are stocking the pig tail power supply cables and we will be selling those, as well as D-tap versions and Swit battery compatible cables, and any custom cables you may need. We are also stocking the SSD's needed for recording and yes of course we are making mounts for the Odyssey, very compact for the FS700 that integrates with our FS700 shoulder mount system as well as our universal kits. These kits are in beta pre production version at this moment, but we will have finalized versions back from our anodizer in about 2 weeks, after testing the kits on the first actual shipping units.

We are also currently making SMPTE 424 compatible BNC cables (thin cable) to custom lengths, and we are stocking 3G 90∘ adapters.

The first few Odysseys are arriving here this week and we will be shipping those to our pre order customers on a first come first pre order bases.

To order the Odyssey 7Q call us 603-383-9283 or check our website for ordering info:
http://www.westsideavstore.com/index.php?p=product&id=75

Call us for the latest info and to discuss SSD, mounting kit and custom cabling. We are still waiting for our shipping version of the 7Q to do final testing. Kits and cables are made right here in our CNC shop and anodized locally so our production time is less than a week. Cables are made the day order comes in

AbelCine gets one main shipment that they divide between their offices as they see fit. I believe that holds true for BandPro and other dealers with multiple locations as well.

AbelCine will get some this week. So will BandPro. And B&H. And Westside AV. And many others in the US and around the world. If they don't get them this week we are shipping more the next week. And the week after that. And the week after that. And so on.

The Odyssey7Q is out of Beta.

We assmbled the first handful and tested them thoroughly last week. Then we got in the first large delivery of production run boards and the crew worked over the weekend to QC then, assmble units and then begin the burn-in testing cycle.

The first official production Odyssey7Q actually shipped out today. It is on its way via FedEx to me in my New York office. I'm lucky that way, but the floodgates are now going to open pretty fast. Our engineering team is still at work improving and adding to the functionality of the Odyssey7Q. But that doesn't stop our manufacturing team, who have now moved full time into building these marvelous little devices and getting them out the door.

Mitch, Where can I find a record time comparison between the 512 and 256 drives. I recall seeing it awhile ago but can't seem to locate that info now. I would like to see the breakdown before pre-ordering drives.
Thanks, Dave Elkins

maybe you guys should just use that money to travel to NYC and get a vacation out of the bizarre price disparities.

I save a $1000 when I flew to Thailand then singapore to get my FS700 the first month in came out....holiday included hehe. I should do the same with the Oydessy7Q lol we have to wait till the end of the year in AUSTRALIA. WTF

haha, that's amazing. I was lucky enough to come off the back of well paid video job I produced as the fs700 hit the market, so I threw my cash at it without a second thought.
Considering the 512gb and 256gb are basically identical on a price per gb ratio, I'm going to go for a set of 2x 256gb drives to start with (which brings me in under the Australian $1000 import limit) and saves me a bucket of cash compared to buying them here.
Then a little later I'll grab another two so that on jobs that need it, I always have the option to be dumping two drives to backup while using the other two on set.

To be fair Daomay, If anyone hasn't pre-ordered yet anywhere in the world, then they're going to be waiting 2 months regardless! But look on the bright side....maybe by the time we get our 7Q's, Convergent Design will be that much closer to releasing the 4k upgrade :)

The updated record time capacity chart is in the manual, which will soon be up on the website, but here you go.

This chart is based on recording to one Terabyte of memory (2x 512G SSDs).
For 512G (1x 512G SSD or 2x 256G SSDs), divide in half.
For 256G (one 256G SSD), divide by four.

For those of you planning on buying drives, it might be good to order at least three of them, since (if I've understood it right) the 7Q can't record super slow motion and record normal frame rates on the same drives. Even if that get's changed in the future it might be good to have a spare drive in case one of them stops working properly while out on a job. I've ordered three 256 GB drives, I hope it'll be enough for a while. :)

I did the same. Not only to be prepared if you can't do slomo/normal on the same drive (I believe they said they are looking into making them both work together) but also to have an available drive while ingesting footage from the other two.

Thanks, Mitch for the record times. I know this has been asked, but can you clarify one more time if the overcrank record times are in finished durations or actual recording/filming durations. For example, 20 minutes on the 7Q is going to equate to 2 minutes of real world shooting at 240fps at 24p? Or, is it 20 minutes of shooting that will then be spread to 200 finished minutes? I think I am asking that right...I am actually confusing myself now.
- Dave

It's 20 minutes of real time that will translate to 200 minutes of slow motion. It has been stated before.

Oh wow, somehow i completely missed that the drives are incapable of recording both slow motion and normal frame rates on the same drive! Is that really true?! I don't see it written anywhere on the CD website
