Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q October 2014 Firmware Update

yeah, I've reset it several times.

I had a similar issue, my O7Q would lock up 20-30 times a day and could only be get to react with powering off/on or resetting. CD exchanged my unit for me. You should contact support.

No, it never locks up. It's just very insensitive to the touch screen. It used to work well until the last two firmware updates. Now it's just insensitive. But, perhaps you have a point Sami. I'll wait to see what Mitch says.

There appears to be some variance in the sensitivity of the capacitive touchscreen. We had an issue previously where some were simply way too sensitive, the opposite of your issue. That's what the F1 calibration is meant to do. But I can certainly see your point and a simple slider sounds like a good idea, at least in theory as I don't know what it actually takes to implement. I'll discuss it with the engineers.

Dear Mitch - you promised me a ham sandwich. I never got it. I am extremely upset about this. I was thinking about eating it all day. But it's not there. All I have now is my odyssey 7q which makes the fs700 look better than the red epic - and I still want that ham sandwich. I understand that CD made this product and its helped lift the quality of all productions as much as possible but If I can't shoot 4k compressed then I will probably start drinking immediately and my industrial talking head video shoot will never look as good as I want it. I need 12 bit 444 recording in pro res avid dnxhd and in mini dv 25 by TOMORROW. Or else. I want a 720p and 4k and 1080p superembosed picture all at once, and I want the footage with a LUT or I will be forced to buy a AJA LUT BOX! HECK NO I CANT DO THAT! I have spent all my hard earned industrial cash on my brand new shiny 24mm anamorphic f/0.3 lens that Shane Hurlburt told me would make my video so freakin' sweet looking - it cost about $60,000. BUT IT WAS WORTH IT.

Sincerely,

Hi Mitch,
It would be great to get the ability to calibrate the Odyssey next update. A monitor that can't be adjusted, isn't much of an accurate broadcast tool. The green bias seems to my eyes to be more pronounced with the latest firmware update, but has always been there. Please can this be addressed asap.
Thanks.

Would you like that ham on rye or whole wheat?

Monitor adjustment tools are planned for the next firmware update.

BTW, it is our finding that in general, most monitors we see in the field are actually a bit "green starved", mostly because their backlights use phosphors with a green spike that is then adjusted for with minus green (magenta) color masking. We use some rather advanced and expensive color management tools to measure our OLED colors and accuracy, resulting in what we feel to be well-balanced color response. Of course this doesn't help much when every monitor on set doesn't match what is seen on the Odyssey. So adjustment controls are on the way. These adajustments will be for the OLED panel only, so the output to other monitors will remain unaffected. And there is a RESET button to return to factory presets.

October Firmware Update - one month later.
Next Firmware update sounds like a pretty good idea.

From my point of view, I would be happy to receive a kind of house keeping update, if new features like 4K ProRes 50/60 FPS need more time. E.g. power consumption of Sony FS 700 4K ProRes recording might be optimized, to avoid dimming the monitor. Playback of several scenes could be solved more comfortable. Choice of LUTs.

As soon as we feel we are comfortable with what we can announce I will share. On past releases, some features were pulled or added at the last minute after testing determined their effect on the rest of the system.

Hi Mitch, just had two shooting days, shooting mostly ProRes and Raw HFR. In HFR, using the latest Firmware, the zoom glitch still occurs from time to time. Completely distorted image, as we know it from previous releases. Really annoying.

Otherwise it worked like a breeze, some sort of Timelapse would be handy though.

I've reported this issue to CD but just wanted to share. On my last shoot I had an issue that I experienced with my very first O7Q, so it has either returned or it was never fixed.

Every now and then my Odyssey 7Q creates a one second long "ghost file" at the start of recording in addition to the real file. These 1 second "ghost files" are corrupt and do not work. They have the same time code start as the real file but a different file name.

I'm on my third Odyssey 7Q. I've had almost as many broken units as there's been FW updates. :( CD have treated me well and been supportive but Im worried since my one year warranty will not last for many more months... I would be really happy if CD was to give extended warranty to early adopters experiencing serious issues like these.

Mitch, thanks for all the updates. This has been one of the most satisfying electronic purchases I've ever made. It brings so much value to me and my work. Can't wait for the next update - specifically 2K240 compressed! Bring on 2015!

-Steven

I'm still seeing the zoom bug where lines from the top of the screen are shown at the bottom. These increase the more you zoom in and out. I've reported it again to support (many weeks ago) but no response.

Sorry, we didn't respond? Thought we did.

This bug was discovered to have not been eliminated just after the firmware was shipped. We since have worked it out, and the fix will be included in the next update.

Thanks Mitch, I contacted Andy yesterday and got a response. Looking forward to the bug fix.

Mitch, any updates yet on the DNx-HD capability option on the 7Q? My clients are increasingly requesting 4K XAVC (usually S-Log2 or 3) and a backup proxy with the LUT baked in. The ProRes flavor has been okay, but DNx-HD would save them having to convert the proxies (for Avid). Hoping the release of the new 7Q+ won't delay the firmware version upgrade for the trusty 7Q owners. http://andersonvideoproductions.com/ Sony F5, PMW-500 XDCAM, Canon C300, BMCC and Panasonic HD

Jim,
I'm with you on the request for DNxHD. Having said that, however, Prores will fast import into MC when the Same as source box is ticked off. And ProRes has UHD, RGB4444 capability with the XQ version. At this point in time, Avid's DNxHD is lacking that capability, so, I look to ProRes as my first line DI.
