Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q October 2014 Firmware Update

I did my first 4k prores shoot with it on Monday... footage looks AMAZING.

4K playback did NOT work very well/at all on my unit though. It was amazingly choppy and when I tried to scrub through it would freak the whole O7Q out, to one point where the drives stopped functioning in the 7Q. I could still safe eject them and get the footage off, but it kept giving me an error in the unit for playback or recording. Should have taken a photo of it... stupidly did not.

Is this not what other people are seeing? Does 4k playback work perfectly for others?

Just reviewed a feature offered by SMALLHD called Image Capture and Overlay. It allows taking a "snapshot" from an on-screen display, then playing that snapshot back during monitoring/recording to align the shot images. I see this as a very useful feature; and, would love to see something like this for the O7Q. Is it possible?

skatajkid, this sounds really scary... this didn't happen to me (yet), but i havent shot 4K on a real job yet, just fooled around a bit in the office. did yu try to format the drives after this happened? did you find a solution by now? CD support?

cuervo, i believe the feature you are talking about is onion skinning if i'm not mistaken, Mitch stated that it will be supported somewhen in the future.

Same thing happen to me with play back, but only when set to 4K to UHD prores. I then checked the 4K to HD prores playback and no problem. Once downloaded in the computer I have no problem, but was very scary on the job when I tried to review footage on the job and quickly switched to HD prores to cover. Not sure if this might be providing the issue but I'm using a 975 battery?

Onion skinning! Im waiting for it as well! CD have promised it will come, but when... probably later than sooner!

Yup definitely gave my heart a bit of a skip haha. Footage was perfect on the computer. Didn't try in just HD mode, just in UHD. Playback in HD in previous firmwares was awesome. I was trying to scrub a lot when I "broke" the drive. I haven't tried formatting the drives yet, but I will try soon! I'm assuming they're fine... just something got weird in the read/write and the O7Q was just looking out for me.

Still I'd love to have playback good in UHD :)

I duno what am i missing. After update i cant use the hdmi, nothing shown on the screen. Tried with A7s and 5dmkIII, both blank and show no input. Before update it works
Not sure why that is happening, but I would suggest oth recycling the power as well as running a full menu reset (in the * menu). If that doesn't work then contact CD Support.

Mitch, does that mean there will be improvement in the noise and lower iso in general? Can we expect that?

Thanks
You can experiment with this yourself. Simply rate the camera at a lower ISO and expose accordingly. Then bring down the exposure in post to see how the image is effected. A good old fashioned light meter is great for this.

What will be different is doing it with a preview at the OLED, or even recording directly in ProRes with that LUT baked in. We are working on this now.

This is a current known isue and is indicated in the release notes of the new firmware.

It is possible and planned for the future. Such an overlay is also known as "onion-skinning".

Playback of 4K/UHD is very processor intensive and we are working to improve it. For now we suggest watching takes without scrubbing, or at least pausing the take to scrub and then unpausing. This is indicated in the release notes. But we are certainly working to improve this.

Very cool - that's what I figured. I'm not responsible and didn't read the release notes haha.

Otherwise like I said, the UHD image is superb.

Mitch I knew about the release notes, however I was just trying to play back a clip without scrubbing being done, and the playback would stop, start, jump, lock-up, etc. So that's when I switched to 4K HD Prores to be safe. I assumed what was going on and computer playback is fine. I usually don't have time to playback but thought since it was a new update I better check to be sure the footage was good, and it was just choppie in playback, but good in reality.

We are still looking into the possibility. We needed to get up to 30p stabilized and then we could see what it would take to go beyond that. We're in that next phase now.

Mitch, I'm curious, when you put out the press release that Matthew Allard is speaking from in this review - https://vimeo.com/82442001 - 9:42-10:56, where it says;

"The Odyssey7Q will soon have the ability to record in a popular compressed video codec. When that is available, the Odyssey will accept the 4K RAW data, deBayer it and transform it into a high quality 4K video, and then record this video in the popular codec. This will be enabled up to the highest frame rate of 4K the FS700 can output, which is 60fps."

Who wrote that and what were they basing it on? Or was that just wishful thinking? Just curious as to how someone got it so wrong. It hasn't happened "soon" (1 year!) and now there is doubt as to whether it will happen at all.
