Odyssey Upgrade Today....

The Odyssey 7Q will now do ProRes, and it works perfectly with the F35!

You can get around 2hrs 45mins of Prores 422 on the 256 SSD.

Now all we need is 12Bit 444 and we have the whole set :)

But does it record 50p on any compressed codec?
According to abel cine it should record dnxhd but I'd like to hear some confirmation.

Current compressed recording is limited to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 10-bit up to 30p. We plan to get up to at least 60p soon as well as support formats in 12-bit 444.

DNxHD is not currently available.

Mitch, wouldn't it be easy for your engineers to take the 50p input and encode the resulting prores be conformed to 25P? no one really ever uses 50p as 50p, its usually conformed in post for slowmo.
The 7Q currently records 50P in dpx, conformed to the project rate anyway, why not let it be processed internally? shouldn't this be as easy as pie? or is there other issues you guys are experiencing?

That's not the issue. The task is how fast we can manage data and do it properly, because we have to do all our work live in realtime. Right now we can encode Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) up to 30p. That means we can handle the data load of up to 30 frames a second, taking those frames and properly turning them into correctly encoded ProRes files while keeping to 220MB/s with a very narrow margin +/1 in the compression rate. Imagine if you have a static frame of a box. That's easy encoding because nothing is particularly changing. Then the box explodes, sending pieces everywhere and there's a huge flash at the ignition. Obviously this is a lot more work in encoding, and the first thing and encoder would want to do is devote more bits to the image. But we can't because the format is 220MB/s and f you deviate it will screw stuff up later. So you have to keep to that data rate while still doing a nice job of recording that changing image in a proper way and not introducing any gly artifacting. And you have microseconds to accomplish it. This is all WAY easier in a post program where the computer can spend more time crunching on complicated frames. But we don't have that luxury as we are recording in realtime as it happens.

So anyway we have it down beautifully up to 30p, and that was our initial goal for releasing it to the world, as that covers about 99% of shooting. But we know we can go up to at least 60p no problem, we just have to go through the number crunching process to work it out. So that's next.

Once we do that, then the feature you ask for already exists. It's in the menu under
[*] --> [RECORD] --> [PROJECT] --> [FRAME RATE]. Because we can currently only record ProRes up to 30p, when in either ProRes mode it stays locked to FOLLOWS INPUT. But if you switch over to DPX recording, you will see the same selection allows for a variety of frame rates. We still record every frame, but we are encoding the file header to tell the post system (and the playback mode of the Odyssey7Q) to play the material back at a different speed. So - once we can get the recording frame rate up to 50p and 60p, to do what you ask, set the camera to 50p and then adjust this setting to 25p. When played back it will be at half speed for your slow motion.

How's that for a painfully long answer to your question?

That'll do! Thanks Mitch.
Its good to have the long of it, so my mind can stop processing the possibilities without knowing the facts from the horses' mouth.

Much appreciated, and congrats on a fantastic product, I love it.

I am so jazzed for it to do pro res - that was the biggest hurdle I think for most people. Now just 444 pro res out of it and its definitely crushed the PIX and the AJA Ki Pro Quad and every other recorder :)

Hi all,

Just wondering what everyones settings are on the Odyssey7Q and the F35. With the latest upgrade the only recording method I'm finding usable is 23.98 444 10 bit. When I jump back to the older firmware, I'm able to record more flavors it seems. I imagine it's something I'm doing wrong so I'm curious to know what combinations y'all are using. Thanks for any tips!

*Im going dual SDI out of IF box

I noticed with the new firmware the prores mode expects a "single link" 422 HD SDI, so if you have both SDI's (dual link) from the IF Box plugged in the 7q, the image appears pink, and if the F35 is set to 50P, the 7Q reports "unsupported.

Right now, in prores mode, the 7q will only do 24->30P in 422 "single link", so F35 must conform to one of those modes.
In DPX mode, you can set F35 to any mode except 12bit, then the 7q will pick up whatever the f35 is set to.
Hope this helps.

Mitch, is there any solid prediction as to when exactly it will support 12 bit 4444?

I will need a recorder as soon as I buy a F35 and this would be the only reason I would buy this one over an Atomos or just using my Hyperdeck. But I can't wait indefinitely once I get the camera. Thanks.

By the way guys, is the Odyssey 7Q the only option to record 12 bit 444 from the F35?

Thanks so much for this info! Very helpful.

Sorry, I cannot make a solid forecast on such a thing. It is actively in development, but some aspects are out of our control.

Hi Mitch,
Has the Gemini 4:4:4 been end-of-lifed?
It works well with the F35, but do you expect any future firmware upgrades that add things like ProRes/DNXhd or 12bit 444?
Thanks

No, the pix240i (with added multiplexer to combine dual link 1.5G into single 3G) can currently do 12bit 444 up to 30P

So is there any reason to wait for the 7Q? Is the 7Q expected to go up to 60P or people prefer it because it's cheaper?
