Odyssey Upgrade Today....

Hi Mitch,
Has the Gemini 4:4:4 been end-of-lifed?
It works well with the F35, but do you expect any future firmware upgrades that add things like ProRes/DNXhd or 12bit 444?
Thanks
Gemini is EOL. Just prior to NAB we announced a Trade-Up program to help move current owners to the Odyssey7Q.

So is there any reason to wait for the 7Q? Is the 7Q expected to go up to 60P or people prefer it because it's cheaper?
The Odyssey7Q will soon record up tp 60p. It also has the best monitor in this class, weighs considerably less than that other device an consumes less than half the power.

Sure. But I dont like buying gear based one what it may do one day. If the 7Q is already supporting 12 bit 444 when I buy a F35 then I will pick one up. If not I will go with the alternative that currently offers that.

SJX - Codex? I have the PIX 240 and a multiplexer and it has weird chromatic aberations all over it - its fine but it doesn't resolve detail super well. It could just be me - I should do more tests.

Agh... i've been using a multiplex/pix combo... i haven't noticed anything crazy yet. Like you said, I should test. I definitely think that the DPX stuff from the O7Q has been the best looking stuff I've shot with the camera so far, but it also screwed me on a couple of takes, recording corrupt sequences from the recorder and camera not being in sync I guess - even tho it showed up fine on the monitor while recording... it definitely shook my confidence in the unit...

Just wanted to thank you all for the help with the ProRes. Shot this weekend and everything worked well, happy with the footage. However, since this forum has been such a great resource I want to begin to start giving back. One problem that did crop up was a weird artifacting that occurred on two or three clips. Have attached a screengrab so you can see the blocks that appear. Could this be an Odyssey encoding issue? Did I just bump the SDI cable? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks

Never seen that before. Bumped cables in my experience usually manifest themselves as a missing field/green or black frame.

Guys, i have owned a Odyssey 7Q from the day it was released, with the F35. Its amazing.... just because there are features not there right this second, doesnt mean that its not amazing. The other way that Mitch and the guys at CD could have done it was to not release anything and only release a full system in the fall of this year. I would much rather at least have 10bit 444 to begin with, then ProRes, then 12bit later on.... it means i can shoot the F35 everyday on a shoot in a small tight package, and for now, work with what i have.

Anyone with a F35 looking elsewhere for a recorder, other than the 7Q, needs to take a deep breath and consider their options. 7Q rocks.... i love it and if it wasnt for the 7Q i would still be shooting Epics and completly overlooked the F35. Trust in CD, and get that 7Q. The more of us that do will light a fire under their a$$ to get the 12bit :)

Isn't the Codex like, very expensive and weights a ton?

By the way, does the 7Q or any of these recorders work with a LANC controller? If not, I wonder why, as this would be very handy to start recording.

The codex isn't heavy at all compared to the SRW-1, if that's the alternative you're thinking of. I would definitely go with the 7Q, though. Personally I'm happy with the hyperdeck :)

If I get the SRW-1 I wouldn't shoot with it full time. Just at the very few occasions I could need what only it offers. 7Q would probably be my go to recorder if they update it to 12bit.

But the codex is also too expensive.

Current compressed recording is limited to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 10-bit up to 30p. We plan to get up to at least 60p soon as well as support formats in 12-bit 444.

Mitch, will the 12-bit 444 be a paid upgrade or just a firmware? And what will we be able to record in 12-bit 444 with the F35? ProRes, DPX, or? Thanks.

Has this question been answered elsewhere yet?
Steve

Would love to know the answer to this as well - but I think Mitch has learned from leading on too many people.

I'm also mildly interested in an HD to 4K option - as I think they could probably do a damn good hardware upscale on the F35 and that would really extend the life of it. And I know yes, you could do it in post, but I think something coming straight from camera theoretically with the 444 uncompressed signal doing a hardware conversion to some 4k codec would be better and pretty cool

There are only two reasons why an on-the-fly 4k uprez would be better than an optimal one done in post:
- Efficiency (no time lost)
- Prior to any compression

However, in numerous other respects, it's a losing proposition. And given the very small marketshare the F35 represents, and the fact that we've already invested in a wide variety of recorders, there's negligible economic incentive for Convergent Designs to develop and market such a feature. Some months ago Mitch was commenting on this board, and the idea of coding the O7Q to fufill F35 12bit, ramping, and variable frame rate was broached. Mitch went so far as to ask in the forum who would buy an 07Q if such a license was available. Crickets. Dead room. Seems like he kind of abandoned this forum after that exchange, and I can't blame him.

But there is a second point to consider. A standard 1080 to 4k (or UHD) uprez treats the RGB components of each pixel as mapped on top of one another (1920 horizontal luma values) - which is what it ought to do - but such an algorith fails to account for the fact that an RGB strip sensor actually can map each color to a specific photosite position, intra pixel (5760 horizontal luma values). In theory, this provides even more data for an improved 4k uprez. But good luck getting someone to implement something that specific in a field recording device or converter box.

HD 444 12-bit RGB is currently available on the Odyssey7Q in DPX, and it works today via dual 3G-SDI from the C500. In the future we will also offer it in the same "popular codec" we all know & love and which I cannot state (others can explain if you are not familiar). Ince this is implemented we will work to make it compatible with the output of the F35 in addition to other cameras. No fees are expected to be connected to implementing this functionality, but it will be exclusively for the Odyssey7Q and not the Odyssey7, which can only provide ProRes 422HQ recording.

We have no plans for an internal up-rezzing or other pixel mapping at this time.

So what I need to record F35 12 bit 444 with 7Q? Only basic 7Q license? Multiplexer?

7Q records 50p from F35?

Now only DPX? Very big and not easy to work. But how long can you record in 256 card?

I need special card reader for 7Q card?

Thanks

I will admit to not being particularly familiar with the F35 signal path.

Current 12-bit 444 recording is via 2x 3G-SDI input. This is included in the basic Odyssey7Q with no additional Record Option. The Odyssey7Q can record 12-bit 444 in DPX up to 60p (50p included). Again this is via 2x 3G-SDI input. In the future we will be able to record this in a compressed format. At that time we may be able to offer recording this via other signal paths, but I cannot state how long this might take. It would certainly be many months from now as we have other tasks at hand. In the meantime, an SDI Multiplexer such as the products offered by AJA and Blackmagic Design should be able to accept the signals from the F35 and deliver them appropriately to the Odyssey7Q. But please note that I have not tested this.

For anything over 30p in DPX you will need to record simultaneously to two SSDs as it is such a heavy data load.

Correction: I just checked our data sheet and it looks like we can do 12-bit 444 up to 30p in DPX. Up to 60p we can do 10-bit.

In DPX, 1TB (two 512G SSDs) will hold 70min of 12-bit 444 @24p, 66min@25p, 60min@30p. For 10-bit 444 @50p, 1TB will hold 38 minutes. So a 256G SSD will hold 1/4 of the amounts noted.

Our SSDs use a standard 2.5" eSata interface, so there are many inexpensive card readers available. We sell a USB3 one for $30.
