Odyssey Firmware 2015.11

why is the fs700 not supported for prores 444?
Because it does not output 2K or HD video in 4:4:4. In the future it may be possible to convert the 4K RAW signal, but that is a further process.

The Odyssey7Q+ and Odyssey7Q monitor/recorders are better integrated with the FS7 and FS700 cameras than with any other cameras, and we certainly offer far more support than any other device does for them. But it is not soley an accessory to those cameras and we do support other systems as well. We must be fair and service all of our clients as best we can to reasonable degrees.

Just tested the 2K RAW to HD ProRes 240fps. Looks nice. Just wanted to double check one thing....

I got a message saying i need to eject one of the SSDs in order to record in that mode. I ejected it via the "eject" option on the 7Q. Do i also need to manually pull the SSD out as well? I did that to be safe, but i wonder what would happen if i physcially left the SSD in the 7Q. Is that still considered "ejected?"

You do not need to physically remove it. Once you go through the Eject procedure, you should see a message in the SSD's button on the Upper Toolbar that indicates it is ejected. To be able to use this SSD again in another mode, pull it out slightly from the slot and then re-insert it. It will then re-initialize.

And maybe this is a really dumb question with obvious answer... but the ProRes 4444 is only supported on camera's that output what signal exactly from the sdi out?
And what does "Currently available for video sources only" mean? Possible future implementation of something other than camera sdi signal?

I took it to mean that it cannot convert a RAW signal to a video 4444 signal. So it can only record video 4444 if it receives video 4444 from the camera.

Could u tell plz what exactly is now available to Sony F35, F5 and F55?

F35:
HD Apple ProRes 4444 & 4444(XQ) in 12-bit or 10-bit at 24p, 25p and 30p

F3:
1080p Apple ProRes 4444 & 4444(XQ) in 10-bit at 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p & 60p

F55:
2K & 1080p Apple ProRes 4444 & 4444(XQ) at 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p & 60p
4K & UHD Apple ProRes (HQ/422/LT) at 24p, 25p, 30p

I'm pretty sure that's correct. It's been awhile for me on F35 & F3.

A SMPTE video source feeding the Odyssey directly in 2K or HD in 4:4:4. As opposed to a 4K/UHD 4:2:2 video source than is SuperSampled to a 2K/HD 4:4:4. Or a RAW data source that would need to be processed to turn it into video.

Awesome! Lots of great stuff!

Is there any hope of combining the two HD/2K ProRes modes (444 & 422) so I can reduce the amount of mode switching in the future? Or is that beyond the capabilities of the Odyssey7Q?

Just had a day where I re-booted very, very many times between the different modes on the O7Q... (Yes, 444 ProRes mode came in handy! So did the new A-B switching!)

Any chance that you (Mr. Mitch) could please explain why CD chose to separate ProRes 422 & 444 into two modes?

from a bitdepth point of view: wouldn't it make sense to record in ProRes 4444 from the FS700, just to get the bonus of 12bit vs 10bit recording? or is the benefit that negligible?

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think this forum has been over this quite a few times already. Wouldn't recording 12 bits just be filling in a bunch of useless 0 values?

yes, if the input was 10bit - but in this case, the input would be 12bit RAW - hence my assumption.

Because one expects to see a 4:4:4 RGB signal and the other expects to see a 4:2:2 YUV signal. They are very different.

Also, the 4:2:2 HD Apple ProRes mode now also contains the Dual-Stream Monitoring mode. Plug in a second SDI feed or SDI+HDMI feeds and you can record one while viewing both. Most cameras that can output 4:4:4 video dow so by Dual-Link SDI (two SDI cable connections). This would get VERY confusing between a Dual-Link 4:4:4 input and a pair of 4:2:2 signals connected via two SDI inputs for Dual-Stream Monitoring.

So they are separate modes.

You are confusing 12-bit RAW data with 12-bit 4:4:4 video. They are two very different things.

Currently , the Odyssey7Q+ can record Apple ProRes 4444 and 4444(XQ) in 12-bit and 10-bit color depth from 2K and HD video sources. In the future it may be possible to take a 4K RAW data signal, convert it to video and then record this signal in Apple ProRes 4444 or 4444(XQ). No promises or timelines.

Understand these fundamentals of RAW data v Video & resolution v color depth/sampling:

- 12-bit RAW is effectively the same as 10-bit video when taken at the same resolution.
- 4K RAW does not have all the color information to fill out 4K 4:4:4 color depth. There is theoretically more than just 4:2:2 sampling, but it is minimal.
- It would require at least 6K worth of RAW sensor data to create a proper 4K 4:4:4 color sampling.
- When reducing resolution, the color information can be SuperSampled from the surrounding photo sites to generate additional color depth. Thus a 4K 8-bit signal can yield a 2K pseudo 10-bit signal. Or a 4K 10-bit signal can generate a 2K pseudo 12-bit signal. I use pseudo because it is more than the lower number but not quite the higher number.
- When lowering resolution, SuperSampling also increases the possible color sampling. This means that a 4K 4:2:2 signal can yield a 2K 4:4:4 signal.

So it is POSSIBLE (again, no promises) that in the future we could take the 4K RAW data from the FS7/FS700 and use it to generate 2K/HD 12-bit Apple ProRes 4444/4444(XQ) files. But we currently do not do this.

As a point of interest, the Canon C500 and C300mkII do exactly this work internally, offering both 4K RAW or 2K 12-bit RGB. We can record either one.

So I decided to go ahead and try the upgrade as I don't have any jobs scheduled through the end of the month. Except a vidcast or three and I can record those directly to the FS7 XQDs.

Man the upgrades take a LONG time to install!

And put me down for wanting the DNxHD/HR upgrade. Need that worse than anything else for the 7Q+ .

Still waiting on Oddy to finish, not even half way yet:(

As we add more & more functions, the ode inside the Odyssey gets larger and larger. When you install a firmware update, except for a core background operating system, you are essentially replacing all the programming within the unit. So every time we update there is more stuff and therefore the firmware update gets longer. I believe we're up to about a 45 minute load time now. That's why we highly suggest you use AC power to perform the update.

If you had an Odyssey7 then the update takes about 5 minutes! :-)

BTW, if your power should fail during an update, remove the SSD, rematch power, wait for a prompt to come up on the OLED and then re-insert the SSD. Works 99% of the time.
