F5: Odyssey 7Q+

I use a thing called lights. Its how people used to light films. Also c500 i rate at 800 asa and i rate at 11 stops of usable dynamic range. And horrible artificial highlight rolloff and ugly unorganic motion and noisy shadows and c log which is optimized for c300 which they didnt even modify to work better w 12 bit 444 output. They were lazy and kept the same. Oh well. And its overpriced. But maybe thats just me. I applaud canons video department for getting a kick in the pants from its dslr department but they are still a c plus students. Kind of lazy and unresponsive to change . Arri sony and red are a students. Cd is that smart understated kid in the back of the class who tries to tutor the c plus kids. Who helps the weak ones become better and does it for free and you guys are nohing but complaints. If you are unhappy w them reach out to them privately or less people will want to buy their stuff. Or just buy alternstive recorders like from atomos that break quickly or are much more expensive. Im sick of all this whining. Most people dont talk on forums and those who talk if they are negative thats how the public sees them. And its fine to be negative but how does it feel when i attack your c500...your pride and joy. Also cameras are just tools. Dont get too attached to them. You are what matters.

Will the Odyssey 7Q+ fully support the A7sII?
Will it record 1080P120 from HDMI?
Will this require a firmware update?

A7SII is fully supported by the Odyssey7Q+.

No 1080p120 over HDMI. The camera cannot output this, only record it internally.

No firmware update required to use the A7SII on the Odyssey7Q+. It works out of the box.

Very strange, the A7s could output 4k but not record it internally.
It also ran a lot cooler than recording 1080P60 internally so I assume that it used less processing.

Then, what you are saying is that Sony has chosen not to export it.

can it be that the HDMI standard doesn't support 120p? If that is the case there's obviously no way for Sony to send 120p out via the HDMI...

HDMI 1.4 or 2.0?
I have not found out yet witch one the A7sII uses.

Well then I will have to find out if the internal 1080P120 is as crappy as the 720P120.
So far the A7s 4k Video DownRes to 1080P30 with the 7Q+ has given me the best results even at ProRes LT.

Yesterday morning I picked up my A7sII. The 1080P120 Video is definitely much better than 720P120.
Because I wanted to record more than 29 minutes at a time, I plugged it into the Odyssey 7Q+
An error message came up that the 7Q+ could only record 24, 30, and 60 frames per second.
Evidently the "bottleneck" is on the Odyssey side.
Thus we need a firmware upgrade.

Mitch just said a few posts up that it cannot do 120 fps out through HDMI. I don't think this can be fixed on Convergent Designs end because it sounds like its a Sony thing, and evidently probably a technology limitation as well with HDMI.

Thanks Mitch,

Hopefully they will find a way to make that happen.

It is a matter of when, not if. The Odyssey can now record:
"2K RAW up to 240fps" from a FS7

So far, I've found the A7sII internal 1080P120 recording to be very much better than what I got from the A7s at 720P. Much smoother and more detailed than even the ProRes 4k DownRes to 1080P30
.
I imagine ProRes 1080P120 to be much better yet + I would be able to record longer than 29 minutes at a time.
Thus the 7Q+ would become a "must have" addition to the A7sII like it is to the A7s.

Today I had to break out my old 7" Must HD Monitor because the Odyssey could not even display 1080P120 footage.
So unless there is a firmware update coming soon to extend recording time and improve quality, the Sony A7sII has done away with the necessity of an external recorder.
