Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere on the forum, but CD is releasing the Odyssey 7Q+ within the next two weeks which allows the use of 4k from HDMI.

"The Odyssey7Q+ retains the form factor and all other characteristics of the Odyssey7Q. The only physical change is the swapping of locations for the HDMI input and output. All Odyssey accessories from Convergent Design as well as third party manufacturers, such as mounting brackets, handles, sunshades, battery plates as well as our Odyssey SSDs are fully compatible with the Odyssey7Q+."

Definitely keeps the argument going between Shogun and 7Q+....

looks like link is down. Who knows - seems like a false story. anyway if its true - you still have a great recorder. and that's just part of technology - you buy something - it goes obsolete. but you can keep using it and pretend it didn't go obsolete. the stuff I'm getting out of the obsolete cameras such as film cameras and old sony cameras is really getting amazing. So who cares. Just use whatever you have and enjoy it and don't worry - we'll all be obsolete one day.

There's no trade in? I can't send my 7Q in for an upgrade?

I'd gladly pay for it, but it doesn't look like there's any type loyalty program.

There is absolutely a Loyalty Program, as noted in the announcement. It is not a trade-in program. Instead, you buy a new Odyssey7Q+ and we will:

- extend the warranty on your Odyssey7Q for an additional year
- replicate any purchased Record Options on your Odyssey7Q onto your new Odyssey7Q+
- gift you a $500 credit to your Convergent Design website account

After receiving these benefits, both Odyssey units will have the purchased Record Options and both will have at least one year warranties. You are free to sell either unit if you wish. We believe this benefit package to be a higher value than a trade-in or upgrade program.

We'll publish details on the Odyssey7Q Owner Loyalty Program soon.

There is an offer of "buy this new Odyssey and we'll give you an extra year warranty on your old one, let you use your licenses on the new Odyssey, and give you a $500 credit".

Sorry, but "buy this new product and we'll give you a $500 credit" isn't an upgrade program. It's a "buy in addition" program. But hey, at least the people who are buying the new 7Q+ are getting 4K ProRes recording through HDMI on Day 1, right? Kind of like what we thought we were getting on Day 1 with the 7Q... A year ago. When in fact, 4K ProRes just landed about two months ago.

I assume the new one is $2300? Could always sell my old Odyssey, I guess. But I don't really need 4K HDMI. If I do, maybe I'll look into the Shogun.

EDIT: I suppose if one could sell the old Odyssey7Q for around $1700-2000 (with FS RAW option), you'd be upgrading for about the value of the $500 credit CD is offering. Not too bad. Plus the extra year warranty is a good incentive for a buyer. I guess I'm just miffed that they are releasing these new features with hardware changes but have yet to roll out a handful of promised features on the old Odyssey7Q. Took them nearly a year to get 4K ProRes, still no custom LUTs... But hey, plenty of time to make hardware and manufacturing changes because that will move more units... the guys who already paid a couple thousand bucks can wait a few more weeks (or months).

You get a lot more than $500 credit. You get the Record Options replicated on the Odyssey7Q+, meaning that your original Odyssey7Q retains its Record Options and it gets another year added to its warranty. We are trying to make it easier for you to sell it.

List price on the Odyssey7Q+ is 2295. Imagine for a moment we did offer an upgrade (no, it is not an option). We had to rework the board inside so the cost to do such an upgrade, including labor and testing of the unit, would have easily exceeded $1000. So if you can sell your original Odyssey7Q (with its full warranty and included Record Options) for $1295 then you are still ahead of the game with that $500. Not to mention that we anticipate such a huge demand on the Odyssey7Q+ that upgrades would have been a long, slow process. We honestly are trying to give the best benefit to our clients. $1295 is what we sell the Odyssey7 for. Getting an Odyssey7Q for a similar price would be a huge deal.

Are you continuing to sell the 7Q at 1795? I assume you still have a lot of units to move. But you are right, Mitch. I think the ability to keep the recording option on the old unit helps a lot for resale.

I think this is an excellent solution to people who want to use it with the A7S. For the firmware updates - I'm sure they are working on it, Josh. They are a small company. Also sure go threaten to buy the Shogun - wait - you can't - they haven't delivered it yet. It's been delayed since Sept right? No offense to Atomos . But in this whole time I've been shooting up a storm on the )7Q while you are have been there waiting, tapping your feet like Sonic the Hedgehog.

I've had the Odyssey7Q since December of 2013. I would say that nearly half of my FS700's 670+ hours have been clocked in using the Odyssey7Q. I understand that they are small but I've also watched it take 10 months to follow through with a feature that was promised on Day 1. I understand that things happen, and it doesn't make me love my Odyssey7Q any less. But I think I have a right to poke at them as someone who has not only purchased their device but also provided a lot of feedback over the last year. In addition, I know that I personally have helped sell a lot of Odyssey7Qs. I've written a blog post all about the device and have received a pretty significant number of emails, PMs, Vimeo messages, Twitter messages, etc. asking about the device, how to use, workflow tips, and suggestions. I've always given it a very high recommendation based on the reliability and quality of the footage I've gotten out of it. I shot a series of videos that were all staff picked on Vimeo and have over 400k views. These alone have results in a ton of messages asking about what it was shot on and other questions about the 7Q. A rental place in LA asked to use footage from them to show off their FS700+7Q rental package. I am sure these videos helped sell some 7Qs.

I'm certainly not just a guy sitting around twiddling my thumbs taking jabs at CD. I'll admit I'm being a bit critical, but I don't think my comments are completely unfounded.

Hi Mitch,

Any idea of the extended warranty options for existing customers? My 7Q is at a year old now and I'd love to extend the warranty as I'm planning on keeping it for a while.

I know the extended warranty was mentioned a while ago.

The extended warranty program is "buy a 7Q+ and we'll extend the warranty of your 7Q!"

Kidding, of course. At least I hope there are still plans to offer a traditional extended warranty on the 7Q! haha.

Anyone know if the HDMI from the FS7 actually really true 10-bit from the processor? And is it YCbCr 4:4:4 or 4:2:2, or sRGB 444?

What am I missing here, why is this a big upgrade? Is it just for 4k stills cameras that shoot video and only have HDMI output? Does it really play a role for the FS7 or the F5/55?

It's not an upgrade if you use video cameras with SDI connections. I believe the 7Q+ was to tap into the higher end, video DSLR market like the GH4 and A7s.

For me, it doesn't make a difference. I seem to remember Mitch mentioning a while back that it has no real effect on current 7Q owners who don't use DSLRs.

Convergent Design no longer has any stock of the Odyssey7Q, however there are some units still available at some dealers. You would need to call around to try to find them, but the price on those units remains $1795.

You will be able to purchase an extended warranty of one year or three years. The program will go into effect when we release the December firmware update, which will be required to implement the warranty and should be available before Christmas. If your warranty has already expired at this time you may still buy a warranty extension. It wouldn't be fair to you since we instituted the program late.

Here's some greater detail on the warranty extension:
