Hi Mitch,

Any chance of bringing down the extended warranty price a little bit?

Probably not, but no harm in asking.

Thanks

No offense josh but having a vimeo staff pick doesnt mean anything. I have a few. Also i have an emmy. And that doesnt mean anything either. We all wake up in the morning go to work come home and go to sleep. Do you think prodding cd makes a difference? They are aware of what they are doing. I am sure they acknowledged you. Just either be patient or get a shogun. Or just work w what you have.

Hi Mitch,

After a quick read of the 7Q+ specs on your site it looks like the HDMI input is limited to 8 bit. It also appears that your HDMI output is limited to HD resolutions. Are these both hardware limitations? Of course I am trying to differentiate between 7Q+ and Shogun. Obviously the 7Q+ does many things the Shogun doesn't but I am trying to determine the workflows where the Shogun is a better fit.

Thanks,
Gary

I was merely using those examples to rebut your comment of "But in this whole time I've been shooting up a storm on the )7Q while you are have been there waiting, tapping your feet like Sonic the Hedgehog." (which I'm not sure how you came up with this... maybe confusing me for other people that are talking about the Shogun a lot?)

You were implying that I'm just sitting around while you're busy shooting on your 7Q. I was giving evidence that I, in fact, have also been "shooting up a storm" on my 7Q. There's a good chance I've had mine longer than most other people (early December 2013). That's not a brag, just evidence that I'm not sitting around "tapping my feet like Sonic the Hedgehog". I think the 7Q is an incredible product and have used it a ton and I've highly recommended it to countless people. Maybe prodding CD won't make a difference, but this is a forum and we can express our complaints. It's been a bit disappointing how slowly features like 4K ProRes rolled out. Did I stop any productions due to it? Hell no. I've followed (and given) the same advice you said "just work with what you have." Does that fact that CD took nearly a year to make good on their promise of 4K ProRes make the 7Q a bad device? No. It's just disappointing to see months go by before having the feature it was advertised to ship with.

The thought has crossed my mind for doing the upgrade, but I'm not sure I really need 4K HDMI input. But looking back at the added value CD is giving for the 7Q (for resale purposes), it actually ends up being a pretty good deal if you can see the old 7Q for around $1700-1800 (with FS RAW codec).

Interesting that you say work with what you have. I bought a c500/cd7q last January specifically because CD promised quick updates for 120fps and pro res, thinking that I would have everything in a good small travel camera. Well as I waited and waited for 120 fps, I had to rent a 120fps rig seven times to work on gigs that I took overseas, and pay insurance and shipping and the hassle of carrying it. I am still waiting on 4k ProRes, and I hear now that it might only be UHD and not 4k. And the sick thing is CD updated the fs700 software much faster even though those owners only paid half of what c500 owners paid. Don't buy anything from CD or anybody else on a promise of updates. It is like the old adage about hookers and lawyers- they smile and seduce you on what is going to happen, you get all excited and pay them- and then they just lay there.

hmmm...that's pretty demeaning. I wouldn't speak so harshly about hookers. The old adage comes to mind..."...the eFFing you got ain't worth the eFFing you got".

The credit is also valid for a SSD purchase?
Yeah, and it's a pretty clever amount... it's more than a 256GB SSD, so you'll either be inclined to use the extra $100 on something else (and possibly spending more money, so they'll at least make something back out of the transaction) or you'll use it towards a 512GB or 1TB SSD. If you use it toward the 512GB or 1TB, chances are CD is still making some money off the extra $300+ that you're paying for the drive (based on their markup, etc). No criticism, I just think it's a smart move on their part!

Oof. Sorry to hear that. Luckily I could at least shoot 4K RAW if I had to and transcode it to ProRes (just took extra time and way more storage while on a shoot). You've got more of a right to be upset/disappointed than I do. I understand Mitch's comments in the past that their work on FS700 codec trickles down to all the other codecs (i.e. they aren't individually created and the have to work down a path). But to charge so much extra for the codec and still not make good on the features... that sucks.

Are you saying that the credit when buying a q7+ is valid for an ssd purchase? Because according to Mitch it is only for software or extended warranty or of course in CDs way of promising- other future products.

Oh, I assumed it was for anything of theirs... So maybe it can't be used on SSDs or physical products, it has to be used on the things CD sell through their website--licenses and warranties. I guess all the products we think of (sun hood, battery plate, d-tap cables) aren't actually available directly from Convergent Design, so they are exempt from the promotional store credit.

Yes. The Odyssey7Q+ uses the same input HDMI capability as the Shogun, so both are limited to 8-bit 4K over HDMI. We do appear to differ on output. While the Shogun reportedly does an E-to-E pass-thru so whatever format comes in is what goes out, the Odyssey7Q+ takes any and all signals that come into it -- RAW, video, HD, 2K, UHD, 4K -- and it all outputs as 1080p over HDMI (actually, if you input 720p then that does go out as 720p). This is so that the Odyssey7Q+ can be used in conjunction with other production equipment on set such as common field monitors, video transmitters, switchers, encoders, etc. All of these devices are commonly available in HD, but getting them in 4K is either expensive or nonexistent. Also, by running all signals through our processing system, our HDMI (or SDI) outputs can be used to display our various image analysis tools, LUTs and a record tally display.
