Odyssey 7Q to start shipping in November?

Hello Mitch, I have a quick question which just popped into my head. Does CD have any plans to allow the Odyssey to receive input from the Black Magic 4k camera? I don't recall seeing it on the website features list.

Why would you want to do that?

Why wouldn't you?

Doubt 4K SDI input will be possible since Blackmagic uses 6G-SDI for their 4K and the 7Q only supports 3G-SDI. Perhaps it would be possible using a box that converts 6G-SDI to 4x 3G-SDI connections. In that case, 4kHD recording may even be available out of the box with the Multi-Stream HD option, since most systems that use 4x 3G-SDI for 4kHD just split the image into 4 HD images anyway. Of course stitching 4 HD streams back together to get 4kHD might be annoying, and probably not very useful when the BMPC has 4K Prores recording anyway, but perhaps it would be useful for other 4K camera systems?

There are some amazingly inexpensive for what you get black magic old monitors shipping that only have single 6g sdi loop throughs as well. I'm guessing if you therefore had another 4k monitor further down your chain you might have to buy their 2x3gsdi, 4xsdi to single 6gsdi mixers to get the signal from the oddessy into those monitors at full res anyway. You might not need it to get hd in, but if you are looping your 4k, you would need a 2>1 mixer at least. Most other market monitors have dual 3G in/out so not an issue for now. Guess things will naturally go that way though.

The 7Q only has one HDMI port, right? Can it be switched between input and output? Is it possible that since it is HDMI 1.4a, 4K up to 30fps recording from an HDMI source might be on the roadmap? As more and more 4k cameras and monitors come out, it would be very nice to see options on the 7Q to monitor and even record 4K sources over 4x SDI or HDMI. Not a big priority, but it would be nice to know it might be possible a year or two down the road when it is more relevant.

Also it sure would be amazing to have 4K XAVC since that would mean I could take my FS700 out and shoot alongside some F55's without anyone having to worry about my camera/workflow/limitations being much different from the other cameras. Not to mention highly compressed 4K would just be super handy for run-and-gun work, since it would be nice to be able to shoot 4K but not have the disk-space/downloading-time overhead that comes with ~90MBps 4k Prores/DNxHD, but I've said this before and it might be just an impossible wish :)

The Odyssey7Q has two HDMI ports, one in and one out. I believe they are both HDMI 1.4. I believe we have a hardware constraint which precludes 4K over HDMI in or out.

Oh yeah I missed that HDMI in port on the bottom of the device in the pictures. I figured that might be the case that the HDMI wouldn't be capable of 4K since the spec list specifically says 1080p over HDMI even if HDMI 1.4 can supposedly support 4K. Ah well, I guess the only other possibility for supporting 4K RGB/YUV I/O is Quad SDI, any plans to support that?

I already pre-ordered my 7Q from ZGC, but always interested to hear more about what is planned/possible for the product's future :)

The 7Q already looks like a really nice monitor and HD recording device, but I mostly just hope it has lots of options and capabilities as far as FS700 recording options. I imagine all the questions aren't that useful since a lot of it is in the works and some things may or may not end up being possible or timing of rollout not known. I'd just love if the 7Q+FS700 is full featured enough that I could get rid of my Scarlet since it keeps breaking and costs thousands to repair...
