Odyssey 7Q to start shipping in November?

I emailed Abel Cine if they had any update on availability of the 7Q. I was told they were expecting shipments to start coming in November.

Just thought I'd share for anyone wondering.

They are being conservative. I met with them today. We are delivering Odyssey7Q units to our resellers near the end of this month.

any recommends on where to buy it Mitch? Who is getting a good amount of units that won't be sold out :-)

I have my preordered - I AM SOOO PUMPED FOR IT! next feat - getting pro res on it! AND I AM SO HAPPY Mitch you are part of it!

Hi Mitch or Dan,

I'm very excited, but what are the possibilities of this happening at time of shipping? These are probably the 3 most important issues to me.

1) 2K RAW and 4K 4:2:2 both working? I think I need 4:2:2 more than RAW.
2) Being able to record RAW and 4:2:2 without switching cards?
3) A small battery solution? I've shoot a lot of handheld and Glidecam, so I cannot use a giant brick to power everything. Small, light batteries are a must especially for Glidecam. I don't mind switching batteries as long as it's not ridiculous like the BMC Pocketcam where you need a dozen small batteries for one day.

Great to hear Mitch. Any idea when you'll be shipping to your Australian/New Zealand resellers?

We aim to ship to ALL of our resellers at the same time. Of course, if some have put in pre-orders and others have not, then there's not much we can do there. Someone has to order a unit before we ship it to them.

But we do aim to be as fair and equitable as possible in the distribution of product.

Answering a few questions here. Let me know i I missed anything.

There is a list of dealers on the Convergent Design website.

We will post shortly as to what functions are available upon initial release and what others are to follow shortly.

The Odyssey7Q consumes 8-15w, depending on mode. This is a very small amount. Since the unit can accept anywhere from 6.5-34v power, it can utilize small, lightweight batteries such as those commonly used on camcorders from Sony, Panasonic and Canon. A single large battery from one of these manufacturers can power an Odyssey7Q for several hours. Nebtek is making a battery mounting plate for such batteries to go onto the rear of the Odyssey7Q. There is also an accessory back from Ocen Video which provides Anton Bauer or V-Mount battery mounts. Other third party accessory makers will be joining them shortly with products for the Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q.

We will ship a large number of units by the end of the month with similar quantities leaving our assembly plant every few weeks. We expect to fulfill our current backorder within around 60 days.

It's probably worth mentioning that the odyssey has a non-standard power connector - so you will need to put in an order for a power cable or battery adaptor of some sort if you intend to run the Odyssey on delivery off batteries (as opposed to the supplied mains power adaptor) - especially if you've got some sort of block battery powered shoulder rig.

Unless, of course, CD have changed their mind and opted to send out the units with some form of standardised power cable (e.g. O7Q to Anton Bauer)

Dtap to Hirose would be useful out of the box.

Either of them would be fine. TBH, I thought it was a bit odd CD didn't just use a hirose connector on the monitor - it's a long established and reliable standard after all, rather than a non-standard connector from Neutrik. But, having spoken to Dan about it on another forum, as I understand it - they're making an Odyssey D-tap cable available, as well as a second cable, with O7Q on one end and flying (i.e. un coneccted) cables on the other (so you can wire the cable up yourself). But you'll need to buy one separate from the unit.

Apparently, the Neutrik connector can be tricky to wire (another reason would have thought hirose would have been a better option!) so it is not advised to build your own cables, unless you're a competent engineer.

You're right, I did read that. Probably best to get supplier to make up cable with Neutrik (particularly if they're tricky) connector to ensure I have power in case the cables from CD aren't available when units ship.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the info! I've ordered the 7Q from Creative Video in the UK. I've asked about power options but they didn't have any information yet. Which type of power connector will the 7Q have?
On my steadicam I've got several power output options but would prefer to use d-tap to the connector you'll be using, will you offer such a cable? Since you say that it can accept 6.5-34V power, it would be great if there was a cable that could go from this battery to the 7Q, for a light weight configuration for handheld or shoulder mount where the 7Q is attached to the FS700. Another thing that would be great is if you had a hood of sorts, and a padded "sleeve" for the 7Q if you just want to put it in another bag.
I've noticed that the 7Q has threaded mounting holes on each side of the monitor. Will you provide any good mounting sollution for it that is much more solid than a noga arm?

Thank you!

The cables are available from Convergent Design and we have a large inventory.

We make the cables to P-Tap, ARRI-standard Fischer-3, XLR-4 and the "flying leads" variants. We make them in a large volume so that we can keep the price down. They are rather inexpensive, certainly compared to other professional industry cables. But there are enough variations that in the end we could not include them all and feedback has been that different customers want different solutions (these units can be used in many, many different situations). So we include the AC power supply, similar to what other manufacturers do. The power supply is auto-switching, meaning that it can be used anywhere in the world. There are battery backs available from Nebtek, Ocean Video and soon other 3rd parties as well, and these companies are using cables supplied by Convergent Design.

There is an interesting history to our choice of the Neutrik connector. We didn't do it to make end user's lives difficult, believe me.

It's amazing how many ways people can break stuff, especially in the heat of a production day. Most people do not look at the connector when inserting it into the socket. They twist it until it goes in. The pins on some connectors are quite small, and they can bend or snap. Other connectors can twist their leads within, causing a short. Over the years we have seen a LOT of units come in for repair with this sort of damage.

Many devices do not have protection should the polarity be reversed or shorted. I know of one monitor company that can be a nightmare in rental situations as it will not only fry itself, but can backfeed power over it's HD-SDI link and damage cameras. That really sucks. The Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q are polarity and short protected, and they can accept a huge range of voltage, from 6.5-34v. Send in the wrong power somehow and the unit will generally just sit there, not turning on and not hurting itself or any other gear.

We wanted to keep the connector small to save space on our already slim housing (just 1" think), yet still leave room for a power button next to the connector. We chose the Neutrik as it is quite petite, yet it's collared-tube design is particularly rugged. This tube makes the wiring a bit tricky, so we built special jigs for both the plug and sockets. After we wire them we also fill them with epoxy to strengthen and protect the connections, and to make it impossible for them to short internally. This is why we suggest that everyone use our cables instead of making their own, and why we are supplying our flying lead cables at a very low price. We're not making money on this, just saving everyone headaches.

Show me any other manufacturer who puts this much effort into something as seemingly mundane as a power connector. We've tried to think of everything to prevent issues from power, but I'm sure someone out there will find a way to break something if they really try hard!

We have sent information to all of our dealers on accessories such as power cables. We will send this information out again next week in anticipation of the units shipping soon. If a dealer ever has a question they can contact our offices, and are invited to contact me personally.

We do make a cable to P-Tap as a standard accessory item. For that Swit battery in your link, we offer a cable to bare "flying leads," which could then be wired by your dealer. If they are not equiped or interested in doing this, please let me know and we can make you a custom cable ourselves. It will be much less for you to source locally then have this shipped over from the US. Additionally, Nebtek is making a battery mounting bracket for the back of the Odyssey7Q which will accept small camcorder batteries. For use on the FS700, I can imagine many clients will wish to use Sony L-series batteries (such as that Swit) which are then interchangeable between the camera and the Odyssey. A single large Sony battery should run the unit for several hours.

Many 3rd party manufacturers are setting up to make accessories for the Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q. For both a hood and a padded pouch I would suggest looking at the offerings from PortaBrace.

For mounting, the case has 1/4"x20 sockets on the sides as well as one in the lower center back of the unit. While there are many arms, ball heads and other various backers already available on the market, again some 3rd party companies are making specific solutions for this product. There will soon be a yoke-style monitor mount available from one and a handheld solution from another. Stay tuned.
