Odyssey 7Q to start shipping in November?

Can't wait to see some reviews on the Odyssey.

My biggest question is: Will ProRes definitely be added? (I'm not going to ask when because I suspect there's no answer for that, but happy to hear otherwise! )

A popular compressed codec is scheduled for end of November. ;-)

Hi friends!!!

Will any of the Odyssey codecs work in Edius NLE by placing them in the timeline without converting using optional software?

Thanks,
Chris

I must admit that I'm not familiar enough with Edius to fully answer that. We will capture in a very popular compressed codec as well as uncompressed DPX files for HD video. For RAW recording, we will capture in the native file formats of the camera systems (Sony FS700 RAW, Canon RAW, ARRIRAW), all of which have widespread support.

does this mean that plans for DNxHD support have been put off? early on that was discussed and is attractive to me since most (or all) of my clients are on Avid. obviously, "popular codec" is fine with Avid, but DNxHD makes many of my post departments happy...

It is still a part of our roadmap.

hmmmm...I was under the impression that the O7Q would ship with DNxHD as a free codec. Has this plan changed? If so, this is a significant disappointment.

On initial shipment in a few weeks, the Odyssey7Q will record uncompressed DPX stacks. We will soon add compressed codecs as a free firmware upgrade. No additional cost, just not ready yet.

Out of curiosity, what's holding up the compressed formats? If you can talk about it of course. Getting 10-bit out of the camera in a compressed but high quality format is what's appealing to me most, especially if it's scaled down from the 4k raw image. Is that still in the works?

It is absolutely in the works. We write our own implementation of the codec to be the most effective with power usage and also best image quality. There are implementations out there of certain codecs that, while technically functional, do not yield the best image quality. There are other devices that purchased a ready-made chip which was preprogrammed to do the codec encoding. That chip was power hungry, generated a lot of heat, and anyway is also no longer manufactured (not sure what the manufacturers who relied on it are going to do now). Convergent Design likes to make our devices as efficient as possible. Low power draw, no fan, as few chips on the board as possible (more reliable, faster processing, cheaper to manufacture, smaller physical size) and of course, the highest quality image possible. So all that takes a bit more time. It is not a "let's add this function" sort of thing that just happens over night. It means lots of code writing which then needs to be tested.

Great answer Mitch. Low power draw, no fan, and higher quality all greatly appeal to me, so that's great to hear. I have a feeling that scale from 4k is going to look great, really looking forward to that. Also I'm sure this has been asked before, but what kind of metadata will we be able to input with the recorded files in the 7Q?

I'm looking at the FS700 metadata menu right now. Here are the fields on my 7Q:

Clip
Reel
Scene
Take
Day
Camera
Project

When you key into any of them a virtual keyboard comes up on the screen to type in whatever you wish. On the sequential fields such as "Take" it lets you set a number and then it will scroll it up from there automatically. Very straightforward and there's a window on the top of the screen with the data displayed.

Can that metadata be entered via the Bluetooth connection/app? i.e. could an assistant with a smartphone be entering shot data without direct access to the Odyssey?

Thanks for the response. Are we able to input our own custom meta data fields such as lens info, camera height, etc. I'm thinking more for visual effects work, but just curious.

These things shipping yet?

whats eta on 4k, that's the main reason for waiting for this vs the sony option.
