Odyssey 7Q Firmware 2.11.110

...Please explain why c500 owners pay twice as much to be in the envious position of receiving the good news that "natural progression means that we complete the work for C500 use last". Again it seems we c500 owners support quicker updates for Sony owners by paying more to be second in line. Strange morality at play here.
It would be reasonable, if there have been much more Sony users buying the option in total than Canon users.

A single mouse won't feed the cat.

Thqnx for the update, Mitch. Keep on truckin'. Look forward to improved capabilities with the F5/F55.
The F5, for example, provides twoxtwo SDI ports, one with a screen overlay and one with only the monitor. It would be nice to feed both ports into the O7Q and be able to view the screen overlay but record only the monitor window.

Hi Mitch, Well finally the second tier status of the C500 is revealed. Please explain why c500 owners pay twice as much to be in the envious position of receiving the good news that "natural progression means that we complete the work for C500 use last". The status is based on technical reasons. If I had to take a taxi from downtown to uptown I would hit midtown along the way. But uptown is a longer drive so the taxi fare is more.

And that's only a small reason for the price difference. The bigger reason is that the market (and as we predicted, our sales) for FS700 record options is about 20x the size of C500 record options. So we do have to charge more to amortize the investment in the development work. The higher cost is not subsidizing the work for other record options, it is paying for the Canon work.

Canon RAW file structure is, shal we say, unique. Particularly the "half RAW" files. It takes an enormous amount of man hours to support them. Here are the formats we currently support for the Canon C500:

- 4K RAW up to 60p
- UHD RAW up to 60p
- 4K "half RAW" at 50p, 60p, 100p, 120p
- 2K 444 12-bit to DPX up to 60p
- 2K 444 10-bit to DPX up to 60p
- HD 444 12-bit to DPX up to 60p
- HD 444 10-bit to DPX up to 60p

And more is on the way.

This is a function we plan to support in the future. On the first pass we will record 4K ProRes via 4x HD-SDI connections. But soon we'll expand that to also allow recording 4K ProRes via 2x 3G-SDI connections.

Question, as I honestly don't know without a camera in front of me to test: If the F55 (or hacked F5) is set to output 4K or UHD over 2x 3G-SDI, then what are the other two ports doing? I suspect that they are shut off as the camera is likely out of processing room, but this would be interesting to see and test.

Mitch,
This is downloadable from the Sony website....F55/F5 user manual Appendix

I don't know about you, but I find that chart poorly formatted and stunningly unclear. We're just reworking yet again our Odyssey manuals to try to make information as clear and accessible as possible, so maybe I'm a little more sensitive to it at the moment. So if you look back at my questions and then refer to these charts for the answer, I would love for someone to possibly interpret to give me a definitive answer. I don't think I could draw such a conclusion based on how it is laid out. Just have to test it directly.

Again, I'm not talking about outputting 2K or HD via the monitor outputs. I'm referring to what happens when outputting 4K or UHD over SDI. I don't see that listed at all. Maybe there are some more charts not shown here.

Subject to interpretation...i had to stare at these for a while...
I read this as saying that if you're recording 4K XAVC (to the onboard recorder, not the RX5), the SDI outs are never more than 2k. That would seem to relegate the SDI outs to 2k monitor status and not 4k record. Connecting my O7Q, I detect 422 10 bit 1080 with 1.5G.

There is another chart, (which i didn't include) that shows 4k or UHD out the HDMI ports, only.

So no firmware tomorrow as you are still rewriting the pages that go with the firmware...?

Too bad, i would really have had use for 4K compressed this week. 4K raw is too big.

Well, as I know that's not the complete story. I specifically have connected an Odyssey7Q running beta firmware to the F55 and easily set it to output 4K over the SDI ports. It's not just for 4K RAW recording. Anyway, while I don't have the camera handy at the moment, I do certainly know it does this. It is a huge feature of the new firmware: record Log 4K to XAVC (F55) and/or ProRes (O7Q), add the LUT on the Odyssey7Q for monitoring and exposure judging with our 4K Waveform, and output 1920x1080 LUTted signal from Odyssey7Q to other monitors on set. So yeah, I do know that part works!

Only question is what happens to SDI ports 3 & 4 when 4K is sent out of SDI 1 & 2 as 3G dual link. I'll find out soon enough.

Geeze, you kids grab onto every syllable, don't you? ;-)

Guess I should have typed "just FINISHED reworking our manuals"!

Hey Mitch,

Correct me if I am wrong but the Odyssey does not record 2K/HD 444 10 or 12-bit 50/60p out of the C500. I shoot lots of 50p/60p and must set the camera to 422 YCC (10-bit only 12-bit is not supported at all at that fps) for the Odyssey to the UPRES to a 444 DPX file. I used to shoot HD 444 10-bit 50/60p all the time straight out of my C500 to my Gemini444 but this is not supported on the Odyssey 7Q. Will this be something the Odyssey 7Q will support in the future? Even better yet record that to ProRes444? Oh yeah HD 120FPS PLEASE halk-RAW is nice but is a post production headache!!!

Thanks

D-oh! That's what I get for "distracted forum posting". Yes, currently DPX 12-bit 444 RGB recording is limited to 30p as we encountered a bug going above that. We'll have it dealt with fairly soon, but we needed to get the 4K ProRes done and it pulled some people in to get that code completed and stabilized. And yes on the 444 "Popular Codec" as well. And we certainly have not forgotten about the 120fps, but to be fair you can't say that FS700 users have that one either!

You are un-boxing the wrong christmas parcel, Martin.
A Firmware File will do the job, not the manual.

Status changed from "coming soon", "coming very soon" to "imminent".
That might cause excitement. Redeemer ante portas? Finally?

That would be perfect for me, really.

Is 4K2HD 100fps in there as well? Was that a little extra bonus perhaps?
