Odyssey 7Q Firmware 2.11.110

I think the problem with the Shogun is that it's basically the same price as the 7Q. I think right now with the instant rebate, the 7Q is actually a few hundred dollars cheaper. Seeing as how much CD has struggled getting the 7Q to work with the FS700, I would think that Atomos has a long road ahead of them, and by then the FS700 + Recorder will probably be outdated anyways. I guess it basically is with the FS7.
True, but 7Q plus FS700 recording option and drives and you easily have double the price :/

I use my O7Q all the time, it really is a game changer with the fantastic 4KRaw->HDProres, it totally changes the FS700. I use it with my A7s as well.

I almost always use a large monitor in the studio and in the field when possible, and I have never had a field monitor as good as the O7Q. It is fantastic at nailing focus with the innovative "edges only" setting.

And how much does a portable 4K WF scope cost?

I am just making the point in the year I have owned the O7Q I have used it a lot and gotten good value from it. Like the 240 fps 2K RAW slomo w/o having to use end trigger and then wait until your next able to shoot again as the 700 dumps the internal memory to the SD card, and the quality is great.

The RAW 4K is really making me appreciate the quality you can get from this really pretty inexpensive camera.

All that said, of course I am waiting for the release of 4K ProRes. I don't think it will be long now. But I don't want a FW that has problems so I am happy to wait until it is ready for release.

Now that the Shogun is not releasing until November (not sure when in November) and it is not clear what it will record, it does not sound like it will do compressed 4K at release. The FS700 O7Q combo will be a great value for some time to come.

I have made good money with the 700/O7Q they have paid for themselves many times over, and I think I will be using the combo even a year or two from now.

Just my nickel. This thread is getting a bit out of hand IMHO. So I figured I would post my thoughts.

I attended Mitch's Odyssey seminar at Band Pro yesterday, and he had the new firmware in beta on his 7Qs. Very cool update. 4K "FS" raw to 4K ProresHQ is gonna be quite an awesome option for the FS7/700.

A month late and still in beta...

Admittedly, the term beta makes it sound alot further away than it probably is.

I really wonder how a marketing professional is performing in a critical situation.

Just to remind: Yes, people in love with RAW workflows are already happy. So are those, acquiring HD with the Sony FS700, using the wonderful 4K2HD option. It has some hickups but it is usable. This is a valid community. But there are others, waiting for compressed 4K recording "coming soon" since a year now. Both communities should show a kind of respect to the individual situation. Those waiting for 4K ProRes had shown patience more than enough. We are still in the massive delay-status. Will the "September Firmware Release" be available next week? Or will it come in November? Or even later? Questions, questions, questions.

For parts of CD's customers, the current situation is poor. So is the communication.
First, heating up expectations again (same as on IBC).
Then refusing to share information, revealed on the BandPro event in L.A.
And now being surprised about speculation?
CD should be happy that people still care.

Totally agree. Well put together thoughts.

My, when the cat's away the mice do play.

Sorry to be away from the forum for a bit. After an event at BandPro yesterday evening I took the red eye back to New York and then went right into some scheduled appointments and activities. I have not had a chance to return to the forum until now, and frankly I thought that people in attandance at BandPro would have shared some. I see that there was one comment from an attendee, at least.

At the BandPro event I showed 4K ProRes working on an F55 as well as 4K RAW to 4K ProRes working on an FS700. There was new stuff with LUTs, a refresh of the Menu system, new audio features, and some pretty cool stuff integrating the Playback system in the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q with post workflow. There was a bunch of other little things as well. Here's a tidbit: In completing FS7/FS700 4K RAW to 4K ProRes, we improved our overall deBayer process. So our 4K2HD processing will be improved a bit as well.

I talked a little -- very little -- about the a7S and the GH4. It can be pretty much summed up as this: The current hardware won't do it. We will have a solution soon. We will not screw all of the owners of the Odyssey7Q. We believe we will have a solution available for purchase and shipping in quantity before anyone else will.

I also talked about some stuff coming for the future: Multi-Stream recording, supporting more cameras, custom 3D-LUTs.

I DID NOT TALK ABOUT ANYTHING HAVING TO DO WITH A REPLACEMENT TO THE ODYSSEY7Q. The one poster here on the forum that mentioned such a thing was referring to a tech support phone call from August, when he had an issue with his power port. At the time we were considering changing to a different connector on the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q, but later decided against this idea. And that is the extent of that.

We give glimpses and sneak peaks of future developments all the time. We do it at events at dealers such as BandPro, at trade shows such as the ProFusion show last week in Toronto, and Dan and I have certainly offered information here on DVXUSER and over at DVInfo that is otherwise not published anywhere else. This forum is an important community to us, but don't for a minute think it is our only venue or that you deserve or should expect more than everyone else gets. This is simply not the way communication functions. If all you want is the official company line, then watch for our general press announcements and check out our website. If you want some added insights, well here I am.

I'm not going to go into more detail as to what was said at the BandPro event. I'm not sure I can remember every word. But the next firmware release is imminent, so you'll find out plenty very soon. And I believe you will all be pleased.

Thanks for the update, Mitch. Looking forward to the FW update here soon. Curious as to the menu refresh and playback tweaks. Guess I'll be finding out shortly.

Thanks for the update, any word on possible framerates in 4k and 2k? Any further detail on LUTs? Just fixing the problematic FS700 LUT now and eventually adding LUT import eventually as previously mentioned? Or is there more to it?

Sounds like it's mostly all stuff that was already knew plus small tweaks? I guess that's why no one was in a rush to post much about it? Or is there something in there that was a big secret I'm missing? Sounds pretty short on specifics.

My main questions now are about custom LUTs, prores framerates at 4k/2k, and whether the hdmi option will be bulky/expensive. I guess if it's an external solution it will add a fair amount of bulk and power consumption?

Thanks for the update Mitch. The coming changes sound very interesting. Is the menu refresh the result of the work you did a couple of months ago when we were discussing it here I.e. A fairly major redesign or is it a few tweaks to fit the new features in?

Looking forward to learning more!

I am very interested in the A7s and the 4K recording as Norway is blessed with between 16-24 hours of darkness many months of the year, depending on the location inside the country.

Will it perhaps be a "HDMI 2.0 to SDI" converter you are planning?

Thanks for the update this sounds promising for all the future/current FS7/FS700 owners. I unfortunately see no mention of my C500 any "imminent" news for us or will we have to continue the wait?

This is one of those points I've been meaning to address.

We do not look to "neglect" C500 owners. It so happens that the way we process information in the Odyssey7Q, the work follows a particular path. First straight video, such as the 4K video out of the F55. Then the RAW structure of FS RAW, such as how we get it out of the FS700, and then lastly the C500 RAW file structure (There's a lot of other steps, but you get the point.). So the natural progression means that we complete the work for C500 use last. It doesn't mean we won't do it, but we have to tackle the others along the way first.

Hi Mitch, Well finally the second tier status of the C500 is revealed. Please explain why c500 owners pay twice as much to be in the envious position of receiving the good news that "natural progression means that we complete the work for C500 use last". Again it seems we c500 owners support quicker updates for Sony owners by paying more to be second in line. Strange morality at play here.
