Odyssey 7Q Firmware 2.11.110

Yes ProRes 422 4K, ProRes 444, DNxHD, time lapse support, anamorphic recording, multi stream recording...
That should keep the engineering capacities running for another two years at least.

They may introduce a 1 TB SSD solution or an Odyssey7Qplus with 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 on the hardware side.

Are those just speculations or somehow connected with what was said at BandPro.

Convergent Desigm, please stop playing games and just announce whatever it was. You have already wasted too much of my time with your hyping and teasing.

When you are already known for not meeting announced engineering goals, it's yet another step backwards to announce announcements and miss those too. You aren't doing yourselves any favors by teasing your already irate customers.

The Firmware features are a compilation of the already promised.
Follow more than one year of forum postings, you will always meet the coming soon statement. Groundhog day.

The hardware features are purely a speculation, 1TB had been announced for Athena. The upgrade of connectors is self-fulfilling, to keep in the market with all these new 4K cameras arriving now.

So I have no clue, what had been presented at BandPro L.A.
Just some ideas, what would make sense.

There is more pressure from competition, now.
Am Abend wird der Faule fleißig.

I mostly just read here but after the last firmware update I had a power pin bend and my 7Q which was then dead, while talking to the tech about the repair and RMA via phone he said this was one of the first units made and this problem had been seen before with others. He also stated that on the new 7Q plus coming out, would have a different connection, so a previous guess about a 7Q plus might be part of the news, which makes sense because with a price drop, that a updated unit is on the horizon. Just hoping we don't get screwed in the process while waiting for the updates and then the 7Q1 becomes obsolete. My 2 cents BC

Oh boy.

C-D working on the 7Q V2 would explain a lot. From my gut no good news for 7Q owners.

Well, I guess on the plus side (or minus depending on where you are in manufacturing), recorders are becoming less needed as shown by the FS7 so you'll probably be fine with the 7Q1. But yeah... the current connector is kinda sketchy.

But a V2 is not that stupid if it allows 100fps 4K compressed, 4K HDMI 2.0 etc.

Its a plus edition, not O8Q or something like that, maybe.

I am very interested in the A7s hdmi 2.0 output for example, so am i inclined to upgrade? Sure, if the right project with the budget that pays for it comes along, absolutely. But not if the 4K compressed to current O7Q never comes. I also expect a timelapse function on the O7Q, and not that it becomes disc. and left for a O7Q v2.

I would not buy any more recorder from Convergent Design, after this never ending desaster.

Did you follow Mitch's Twitter Account, today?
Their Engineering team miss their timelines, 4K compressed recording coming soon since nearly one year. Now, it's coming very soon.

And a Director of Communication, playing hide and seek with his community.
You release information in front of 30 - 50 visitors and are not willing to share in public?
That's the level of 's*%t happens' again.

Oh, im pissed too.

Just trying to reason with it as well.

In Norway i`d just return the product and say they did not deliver. State would help me. But an american company working under (non-existant) consumer protecting american laws. Ish.

@peterprevec Yes, we will start with 4444 & Proxy. No timelines. Lots of stuff to do. From a reply regarding 7q roadmap on twitter.

It's not a matter of missing legal enforcement.
In my area of business, a market position is usually build upon reputation of quality and reliability.
Devices might be more expensive. But they do not fail in expectations.

Odyssey7Q has been marketed as "quad device".
But it is an experimental device, will it ever get mature?
They may start adding other flavors of ProRes. But first, they shall finish the promised.
At least one compressed codec should be available to record 4K with all "popular frame rates".

My fear is they are spending all the effort in 7Q2 with HDMI 2.0 support for the masses like GH4 and A7s.
And after a while they will say sorry, we don't get the the [ ] 4K to ProRes [x] recordable LUTs for the 7Q
anymore as s they did before with DNxHD on the Gemini.

There will be competition.
Being forced to offer discounts is not a christmas present. Convergent Design missed their opportunity. Now, they have to ramp their stocks and to update the device, to stay in market. Very soon, they are just one of the potential manufacturers for 4K recording devices. Maybe even in the FS700/FS7 territory.

To keep morale up:
Dealers and industry follow, how this/our story will end. They cannot risk to fail in 4K ProRes recording (after announcing that again last month!).

If it's an Odyssey7Q v2 announcement before they even release the 4K ProRes firmware, which was promised at launch a year ago, I'm going to be pretty disappointed in CD. I've got an FS7 on preorder and I'll probably hang onto my FS700+7Q for second camera/RAW stuff. The 7Q makes the FS700 into an entirely new camera and I have been able to capture some incredible stuff with it, but I think in the future I'll stick to cameras that have the specs I need and not rely on this over-promise/under-deliver third-party stuff.

+1

I do not own 7Q yet, but I was considering it as a next step. I think I've completely lost interest in owning it :/ I will as well stick to the cameras with specs and from time to time just rent 7Q or the next hot recorder. Shogun might be exception as it's price is good to buy it just as a monitor, any recording features will be just icing.

I think the problem with the Shogun is that it's basically the same price as the 7Q. I think right now with the instant rebate, the 7Q is actually a few hundred dollars cheaper. Seeing as how much CD has struggled getting the 7Q to work with the FS700, I would think that Atomos has a long road ahead of them, and by then the FS700 + Recorder will probably be outdated anyways. I guess it basically is with the FS7.
