Odyssey 7Q Firmware 2.11.110

Hey Martin,

I always undo the SDI cable just to prevent it from breaking. Yeah, it might be a few more steps like plugging in an extra cable adding a battery or so on the FS700 + 7Q setup, but with the FS7 I'm going to have to allot time for adding the handle every time I take it out of the backpack because the camera is so much taller, so that pretty eliminates and time savings on the FS7. In fact, I think setting up the FS700 + 7Q is actually faster just because of that. The FS7 is over 9 inches tall with the handle. I don't know if they make backpacks that deep. The FS700 just barely squeezes into my Think Tank bags which are 7.5" deep.

Plus, and this is HUGE factor. On my FS700 + 7Q setup, I can leave my long tripod plate attached so I can quickly throw it onto a tripod if needed. The FS7 body is so much shorter, it doesn't seem like you can fit the should pad and a tripod plate. That's a huge time waster right there and a big plus for the FS700.

So yeah, each has pluses and minus. But I'm going to say for myself, the FS700 + 7Q actually has the size and quickness advantage when shooting doc stuff, especially because of the tripod plate issue.

@Gene: begs the question - why do you actually need the FS7?

Hi Sunny,

Lately, I've been shooting some reality stuff and just did a racing job. They only want the internal codec and not 7Q files because Pro-Res HQ is huge and only S-Log which they don't want to grade. The 7Q Pro-Res and RAW is only for more high end jobs.

That's where the FS7 is really going to shine is on the lower end, doc and quick turnaround jobs because of the great internal codec.

I'll probably just keep both cameras.

Fair point. In that respect and the construction, weather sealing etc it does seem more suitable for the rigours of TV production. I'm taking a look at it myself this week.

Mitch, or anyone else: I haven't seen this issue posted before... But please link me if it has been!

I was shooting 4K 24fps, and the SSD in slot1 filled up, then automatically switched to the SSD in slot2. All seemed good (first time trying this). But when I copied the files over to my workstation, the dng folders "_1" & "_2" were split, but no frames are missing... but there is no audio .wav in the second folder? Is there a special way to use you CD ClipMerger to reveal the .wav for this instance?

**Could also be my workflow that isn't correct? But I just checked back, and it doesn't exist on the second SSD when viewed on Windows7. Weird!

Is this a glitch? Already known issue? My issue? (I can create a support ticket if it is a new occurrence)

Convergent Design has postponed the upcoming firmware update for the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q by a few weeks. Two weeks ago at IBC we showed 4K ProRes capture and this functionality is complete. But some additional features, while functioning, need to be completed in a reliable and user-friendly form for release. We expect to make this firmware update available by mid-October.

I made a bet "not before October" in July

There's ZERO reliability in Convergent's announcements. Saying now a few weeks means nothing. I saw it coming but it's a real shame.

Or maybe, 4K compressed will come out the last week of October to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the 7Q's release. :D

Odyssey7Q is a "2013/14 device" and there will be more 4K recording solutions in the market, soon. CD delivered RAW recording more or less timely, made a nice 4K2HD solution, but ProRes 4K did not hit summer, we should be happy to expect 2160p50/60 before winter 2014/2015. The "September" Firmware release is only 2160p24/25/30. So CD lost their time window. Being an early adaptor client does not pay out (again). Sad.

FS7 will be available in December, Sony's ProRes path is announced early 2015
That will be the time where competition will start in the FS700 league.

But I am not sure, if this is true competition. Maybe, the FS7 extension unit is not solely a Sony solution and CD is supplier for parts of that. We will watch the pattern of release dates and postponed deadlines, will see what flavours of Codecs will be supported. That could also be a reason why the Athena announcement has been taken from marketing, too.

They announced it early to keep everyone from selling their FS700 O7Q`s to buy FS7.

Pure marketing.

I don't understand what you want to say?

I pre-ordered the FS7 but was thinking to cancel my preorder and stay with the 700Q for a while. But after the announcement I will keep my pre-order and probably will sell the 7Q also. As Gene was mentioning above I have also a need for a ready to edit 10bit footage. (Pro Res would be fine but XAVC intra plus L is okay too) 7Q REC709 is not usable but recordable LUTs could be a great solution. As long as C-D has an almost one year delay for announced basic features I have no hope in additional development. Remember also DNxHD on the Gemini which was a basic feature but never realized and cancelled in the end with an apology.

edit
For me personally the FS700 was a great invest. I stepped up from stills photography to motion with a 5DM2 as many did. With the FS700 I had a big improvement in image quality and I also learned a lot of video making with the handling of the FS700. The 7Q kept the FS700 longer alive but much of keeping alive was based on announcements. C300 would have been an alternative but to be fair it would have been way more expensive and also have come to end of life quite soon.

I am saying that while FS700+O7Q can do the same as FS7 + some extra, that is a minimum requirement to further sell O7Q`s.

FS700 vs. FS7 is two different beasts and price tags. But pair the FS700 with the O7Q and the story changes completely.

now I get it.

You think the early (7 days) announcement will keep the people trusting in 7Q 4K and make FS700 owners still buy an Odyssey? Well.. maybe :)

btw Am I right that there is no confirmation that 4K ProRes 50/60p will be available?

Well, not just new potential owners (the FS700 is cheaper thus making several new potential O7Q buyers down the line) but also the existing clients.

"Please dont dump your units on the used market, we want to sell new units instead of new FS700 owners buying used units."

Announcing 4K compressed early i think was more about damage control and sales than we think. But maybe im wrong too. Its just assumptions and thoughts :)

I hope Convergent Design comes out with more info regarding their raw from the FS7 soon. It will be vital to my descision to sell either FS700+7Q, or just the FS700.
What more info do you want? We will support everything the camera outputs in much the same way we do on the FS700.

- 4K RAW to 60p (FS7 doesn't have the 4K 120p burst mode)
- 2K RAW to 240p
- 4K RAW to HD ProRes 422 HQ up to 60p
- 4K RAW to 4K ProRes 422 HQ (coming in a few weeks and before FS7 release, initial release up to 30p, higher speeds tbd)
- 2K RAW to 2K ProRes 422 HQ (coming, frame rates tbd)

We'll support trigger from camera, timecode, S-Log3 LUTs, etc. Don't know what else you want to know.

Seems like a BPU 90 has very similar specs to a Swit V-Mount.

Here's Swit S-8082S which people use for the F5

Voltage = 14.4V
Capacity = 88wh

Sony BPU90

Volage = 14.4v for nominal, 16.4v for maximum voltage
Capacity = 85 wh

Same voltage with only a slight difference in Watt Hours (WH). So why can't the BPU90 power the back attachment? Or am I missing something.
Not noted is how much amperage can be drawn at any given time. I don't know what the limits are on a U-series battery, but all such batteries (at least properly made ones) contain a thermal fuse to protect from attempting to pull too high a load, which could result in a fire.

An earlier post in the thread showed two Hawk-Woods adapters, one for a single U-series battery to V-mount and one for three of them together to a V-mount. I would feel much better about the three together design.

hmmmm....C-D has a shaky rep. Years ago I invested in the Flash XDR, a very costly investment.Within a year it was discontinued in favor of the much more compact Nanoflash. This time around, I resisted the Gemini, waiting for the Odyssey. These devices must be very expensive devices to develop and bring to market. I think C-D sells development devices in order to pay for non-recurring costs for follow on models. Caveat emptor applies. Not to say the O7Q isn't useful. It was sold under false promises, that's all.
