Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q firmware update postponed

Odyssey7 & Odyssey7Q firmware update postponed

Convergent Design has postponed the upcoming firmware update for the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q by a few weeks. Two weeks ago at IBC we showed 4K ProRes capture and this functionality is complete. But some additional features, while functioning, need to be completed in a reliable and user-friendly form for release. We expect to make this firmware update available by mid-October.

Yeah I saw that info - doesn't say much though and it's not clear how it works. My guess is still that it's a dongle to unlock the feature???

I like the v mount though as I have IDX v mount batteries, so I'm sorted :)

I thought you weren't going to include other features again like last time that could delay the release?

I don't get it - what does the external unit do to enable in-camera Prores recording? Is it just a big dongle to enable that feature in-camera or is there some additional processing power in the ext unit (my thoughts are that that is unlikely)????

In one of the interviews (can't remember where) I'm pretty sure they said that the signal gets sent to the backpack, encoded, and sent back to go on the XQD card.

OK that's interesting - that means there's an extra CPU in there then. Wonder if that would also allow other features in the future and if Sony will be releasing a roadmap of possible features???

ProRes encoding takes a fair bit of horsepower, so it is contained separately in the accessory back. Otherwise the FS7 body would be larger and consume more power.

Well, since it sounds like we will have to use the back attachment for technical reason, I'm hoping they can just make BPU batteries power the back unit as well, or at least make an adapter. The BPU 90 has pretty similar power specs to a V-Mount, so it should be able to power the whole camera and the unit.

I'm hoping to avoid buying two different types of batteries and chargers (which is just way more bag space as well) to power the same camera.

Does it? Atomos is doing it in a recorder the size of a business card that draws 4w. And that includes space/power for ports and media etc not just processing, also only HD so far though...

Maybe someone will come up with a BPU to V-Mount plate - maybe take two BPU batteries? if thats possible? More weight and clutter though.

I did see someone asking if the BPU batteries could be attached and then the extension on top - not sure there was an answer? Might be a bit awkward and I doubt the camera would power the extension - or would it? mmmm.... Where's the DC in jack located?

I guess the FS7 ext unit is taking RAW and converting that to Prores????

I presume the Atomos is taking an HD signal and converting that? Or am I wrong? it's a guess.

Lol, sub par solution? Really? I think you're going a bit far with this statement. Since when is a camera that shoots 4k raw, 120fps, and Prores Sub par? haha. geez a new camera comes out (with a lot of similar features) and people are calling a great camera sub-par

Yup. In the documentary world there are different rules. Whats not on tape has never happened.

So while you stand there and screw your FS7Q0 rig together, the photographer with FS7 captured the moment and packed up before you got even ready.

Thats a dealbreaker for the FS700+Odyssey 7Q.

And then we start talking about weather protection. How about adding rain protection for your FS700+O7Q rigging time as well? Water damage repairs are very costly. And a faulty SDI cable to boot? That can ruin a shoot.

The FS7 just runs over FS700+O7Q in all of these cases. However, if you already own FS700, spend your days in a studio or feature enviroment with assistants who can build the rig for you and you need a monitor no matter the camera, well then, great! But im not. The FS7 is all that i expected FS700 to be in 2012 and i dont care that much about raw. Especially those silly CinemaDNG filesizes. If i have the budget to post-process raw, i also have the budget for RED.

The reason i bought O7Q was to get 10bit compressed. That little FS7 module on the back is cheap compared to O7Q+raw+media+rigging!

I've got a plate like this that I use on LED lights: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2014-NEW-Ve...526?pt=Batteries_Chargers&hash=item540f96bf7e

Two of those Sony batteries in series should be about the same voltage as a v-mount.

If you want to go purely BPU (which, maybe there will be BPU battery plates for the 7Q? or you could piggy back off the d-tap if you needed RAW) then HawkWoods makes a couple adapters:

I cannot believe, after months of delays and postponed releases, to read this kind of statement again. A function is complete when it's in the hand of paying clients.

At least, alternative solutions are in sight.
Let's see, who will be able to deliver ProRes 2160p50/60 capture first.

yeah, but thats ALL its doing. its not a camera...

Seems like a BPU 90 has very similar specs to a Swit V-Mount.

Here's Swit S-8082S which people use for the F5

Voltage = 14.4V
Capacity = 88wh

Sony BPU90

Volage = 14.4v for nominal, 16.4v for maximum voltage
Capacity = 85 wh

Same voltage with only a slight difference in Watt Hours (WH). So why can't the BPU90 power the back attachment? Or am I missing something.

Here's my FS700 + 7Q Rig. It's actually pretty much the same thing / idea as the FS7. Really easy and quick to setup and super light. In fact, I would go so far as to say with my little rig, the FS700 + 7Q might even be a little better for doc work. Why? Because the FS700 is almost 2 inches shorter than the FS7, so it can still fit into a Think Tank Airport backpack. The FS7, I'm going to have to attach / remove the handle every time I put it away / take it out.

When I do doc work, because of all the running around, a compact backpack is a must. Pelican cases and side bags are just a burden on doc shoots. Too bad the FS7 is so much taller than the FS700.

I'm still going to get the FS7, but don't discount the FS700 + 7Q in terms of ease of setup (my pic proves that). In fact, I'm probably going to position my 7Q where the EVF is, because for my style of shooting, the 7Q monitor is more useful than an EVF probably about 70% of the time.

I know Gene. My rig is quite similar to yours, with the addition of some battery on the side, and a little weight addition on the back of the shoulder plate for even better weight distribution.

Its still cables and screws and stuff to attach and dismount. Do you pack your 7Q rigged to the FS700 into your backpack/bag? Wouldnt that break the SDI quite fast?

When getting ready:

1: Attach 7Q pole to FS700
2: Attach 7Q to said pole
3: Attach battery to 7Q
4: Attach battery cable to 7Q
5: Attach SDI between FS700 and 7Q
6: Turn on two devices
7: Check that both devices are on correct settings

And thats before we start rigging the camera for handheld use. I imagine FS7 being alot easier to get 10 bit 1080p out of the camera.

Edit:
I hope Convergent Design comes out with more info regarding their raw from the FS7 soon. It will be vital to my descision to sell either FS700+7Q, or just the FS700.
