October events at Canon Hollywood

we are not on same time zone - but i wonder if that even already happen ? just wonder if there were any special news about the c100/c300?

I did get an email back from the Canon people at the Hollywood Center....they will not be able to stream this event but are actively working on it for the future. For those going tonight, see you there!

Any news? I saw a tweet where there was STILL confusion amongst Canon reps about the quality of the signal coming out of the C100's HDMI port.

Hi

I went to the Canon event last night. Here is my take.

Announced differences from C300: C100 HDMI out can be the same as C300 or you have the choice of adding timecode to the HDMI out. Also a new gamma setting called Wide DR which is a preset that gives you just what it says.

Other observations: After handling the camera it exceeded my expectations for ergonomics. With a photo lens it is light and easy to handle. The grip is very comfortable. The LCD position and features are good. The magnify for focus seems to be 2x only. I can't remember about the C300 magnify. The 2x worked very well. The ability to strip off handles and grips for light and stealthy, or rig it up is very nice. I did not record and what was shown was the camera plugged into a projector. Lots of buttons and a really nice feel. Things seem to be where I naturally would want them or will get use to very quickly.

The Canon rep described this as a camera designed for a single operator.

One question I felt a little queasy about the answer to was the upcoming autofocus. The oneshot autofocus worked very well. So let's put that aside. My question was about continous autofocus for the claimed 70 million (according to Canon Rep) Canon lens out in the world (yes I know they don't all autofocus). I am hearing that the autofocus on the C100 will only work with the new STM lenses. Yes I understand that my USM lenses might be noisy (okay if mic is away off camera) or jerk focus and hunt (otherwise known as focusing quickly for stills and stops hunting before the still but I would like to be the judge) but I still have the lenses and by the time I am autofocusing I usually just need to get something onto the card that is a one time uncontrolled shot. Someone mentioned that RED cameras can autofocus USM lenses (I haven't any RED experience). So for myself and people like me that shoot a wide variety of situations and are looking for a camera with a great picture and artistic latitude but also can get off the sticks and run & gun I wonder about being limited to the STM lenses. Maybe I have to get the new STM zoom and live with it for autofocus. I just mention it because so much is made of the EF mount and using all your existing lenses.

I was shown that it has auto iris button and auto WB.

EVF was okay. I couldn't make focusing and exposure aids show up on it but then a Canon rep showed me peaking on it. One of the Reps mentioned that he has never seen anyone use it to shoot. Its seems a little like a vestigial organ. Having said that with some adjustment the peaking looked really good through the EVF. So maybe not much to look at - but good to look through.

That's my take. I will look at it again before purchasing. This first look was very positive. This camera can be stealthy stripped DSLR-like or rigged. It has Buttons! I can't see myself using touch screens in non-set situations.

I will want and certainly in the future will get a chance to pixel peep the difference the codec makes between the C300 and C100. For me this was an ergonomics and (some) features test.

Best Regards
