Oceanside Video

Re: Oceanside Video

Thanks Stabb!

I am writing:

1. The Viral Outbreak storyline right now. This is geared towards being a web-based serial in the vien of 28 Days Later but more based on the I AM LEGEND Novel by Richard Matheson. It's Untitled currently but might be called Chasing Daylight.

2. An UNtitled horror suspense thriller (how cliche) loosely inspired by Texas Chainsaw and What Lies Beneath (I emphasize loosely). Just ideas and inspiratoin from both films.

3. A Sci-Fi based short for one of our members projects (That's all I can say about that :P )

I think I have mild ADD. I cant just write ONE.

David - :)

Neil is the real score masta! But I do enjoy doing it. I'd like to pick up some cinematic loops (strings) and try my hand at that.

I'm gonna start sharing more. Ill never learn until my peers can help and guide me.

Re: Oceanside Video

gorgeous work. great framing and cinematography! i know people say this all the time but some of those shots really look like they couldn't be DV.

what kind of ND grad are you using? I have the cavision 3x3s in the same mattebox, but shooting straight into bright light results in serious reflections from the front of the lens.

the only thing i really didn't like was the blur transitions - they kind of give themselves away cause the edge of the frame blurs out as well :)

Re: Oceanside Video

sweet man! good job john. i dig it. i really like just seeing these sort of random images put together to music...its nice. i think its a great exercise for people who are itchin to shoot something.

is there a way to "repeat edge pixel" in vegas? like the fast blur in AE. this way no black around the edges whn you blur.

Re: Oceanside Video

Nice picture! I really like the shot with those black trucks on the left. It is nice to know what settings did you have when shooting...

ps. The audio quality is great.

Re: Oceanside Video

Acctually I really like the camera shake. It is a very popular contemporary style and really added to the feeling of the piece. I don't think that I would have been as interested in watching it if it was so stable, as most of the shots had little movement going on in them. Its not like it was "Bourne Supremacy" shakey cam, it was understated and natural.
Some of the first few shots were a little dark for me. The shot where the title comes up was goood dark to contrast the title, but I found not mush contrast in the first few shots, just and over darkness. Later though, the more color rich shots looked great. I would raise up the brightness value on those first few shots.

I liked the tone of it over all, great music, it could have easily been the title sequence to an awsome movie.

Re: Oceanside Video

..this was just fun to watch . visually and audibly entertaining. some of the the compostitions were just gorgeous. ..again the colorization was very appealing. short and sweet. i really liked it.

Re: Oceanside Video

I'm a huge fan of textures, and they were all over this film. I loved the scenery of Oside, but to be honest, my fav shot was the last shot...that piece of tape looked like I could just rip it right off...
I guess the darnkess is the price u have to pay for the resulting richness and depth...the ND filter, no doubt. I'm always fighting light vs depth.
I also loved the shot of the sign on the chainlink fence...
Great work!

Re: Oceanside Video

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Jason - I am using the CAV 3 x 3 Mattebox and the ghetto ND GRad that they offer; I could not afford any filters of name brand quality. I agree with the edge blurs. I should have masked it properly and did not. I have the FRENCH FLAG that I drop over to block some of the light from the sun out when shooting in it's direction.

I learned a good one on the brightness issue. Should have no problems on the next one. (I also learned yesterday how to upload a movie file to my server so I should be submitting more work)

Re: Oceanside Video

Don't feel bad John, I'm getting a ghetto ND Grad from Cavision as well. I'm not going to spend $160.00 for a 3x4 from Tiffen, there is really no other choice.

Re: Oceanside Video

What was the .DOC you mentioned for calibrating your monitor? I know my monitor is not calibrated correctly, is this something that you can make available to the rest of us?

By the way, I loved the clip. I am always complaining about the modern trend to violently shake the camera in order to give the "feeling" of tremendous action, I hate it. However, the occasional shake in your footage made it REAL - I loved it!

Thanks,
Larry

Re: Oceanside Video

Thanks Larry and Don I agree, budget for name brand filters is out of the question currently.

I am not sure exactly where to find the .DOC Online but it indicates www.videouniversity.com

Also, further search online shows umpteen resources on Calibrating Monitors (Funny, I never thoguht of this as I don't use a professional monitor but a computer monitor)

Re: Oceanside Video

have you had any luck cleaning the filters? when they arrived they were kinda streaky, maybe from contact with the plastic packaging materials. I've been interested in giving them a clean, but not sure what the best approach would be.

i would have been happier if they sold them individually, too. I only wanted ND grad, blue grad and polarizer, but ended up getting orange grad and star as well, which i predict i will use approximately no times.

Re: Oceanside Video

hi John,
Just wanted to say that those are the colors I have been bothering everyone so much about.

You answered my question it is possible to get a good red with the Pan 100 did you use the 100A?

What settings did you use for those shots?

I think everyone here knows by now I'm looking for a DP for my movie if you are interested in talking about it please send me an email to brasscopage@hotmail.com or anyone else who thinks he's qualified is welcome to send me resume.

I loved the flow of the shots, the framing of the stools was really good, all the shots had a special quality. You are Good!!!

Re: Oceanside Video

The settings are more or less default (no major tweaks that would require mentioning). The POST work was mainly increasing contrast, bringing brightness down a notch (yeah yeah yeah we covered this :P ) and at times either moving towards a sleight desat or oversaturation.

Re: Oceanside Video

Great stuff John, stylish, hip and perfectly encoded.

If I was making vids even HALF as good as that, my head'd be so big I couldn't get through the door!!!

Re: Oceanside Video

Great stuff John!

Was it shot on a sunny day? Morning afternoon? The look is fabulous. Liked the details and latitude even on the darker shots.

Re: Oceanside Video

It was shot at HIGH NOON. The entire week was filled with rain clouds and beautiful sunsets and the day I went out was a spotless blue sky. >:( I prefer clouds.

jasonk

I use a little microfibre cloth (The kind for cleaning sunglasses) with NO DETERGENTS BUILT IN. Just a clean cloth and a puff of breath and rub gently. I wish they sold them indiviudually as well as I have 3 filters I have no intention of using (ND ORANGE, ND BLUE and a STAR EFFECTS which is so lame).

I mainly use the ND GRAD, POLORIZER and at times a SOFT EFFECTS.

I'm stoked people are digging the coloring. I was trying to make it look like 'photographs'
