Oceanside Video

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
Here is a small video showing Oceanside, CA harbor and sorrounding shops.  It's a series of compositions put to a score done with the new Acid 8 Pack.

I was going for a high contrast/reversal/super16 kind of look and hopefully I got it close.   The mood is typical post tricks with blurs, fades, etc. and nothing we havent seen before.  :P

I'm curious if this will look a little darker on your computer's than mine (see oside thread).  I also think I rendered it out incorrectly as the skies have that 'computer graphic' look to them and not the 'video' look it should (any thoughts or suggestions on this is appreciated)

Although the video is nothing original feel free to hook up with some comments and/or suggestions good and bad and honest.  I never really wanted to share anything unless it was 800 undead soldiers attacking the fortress but lately have decided that sharing visual imagery is fun and a good way to vibe with others who have shared.  What I mean is, just because this isn't feature footage doesnt mean I cant share stuff Ive been playing with :P (I'm bonding guys).

YES. I am aware of the improper letterbox mask :D

It's Windows Media, 1:54 seconds at 18 Megs.  As always:

Re: Oceanside Video

looks good john. Love the oldschool John Carpenter style soundtrack. Gave me the atmospheric feel of Prince of Darkness, whether that was intentional or not. If it wasnt, not your fault, once you get Carpenter in your blood, it never leaves.

Re: Oceanside Video

Hey John-

Never apologize for posting stuff! I think it is a great idea to just go out, point the camera, and mix it together for everyone's enjoyment.

I'm really kicking myself for not taking a day about three weeks ago and just driving around my Denver neighborhoods and getting random shots of the gorgeous splash of fall colors.

Anyway, your clip: liked it, liked the color-correction, but some of the shakey shots were distracting. Cool beans.

Re: Oceanside Video

John, this looks very interesting. I felt a little disconnected because the color correction is not consistent. This may have been intentional on your part, I'm not sure.

There is some mild camera jerk in some of the shots that I found slightly distracting but other than that, I like the imagery you captured and some of the oversaturated shots are really gorgeous.

Nice job...you should do more of this stuff...it's a great way to improve your chops...

Re: Oceanside Video

John,

Nice editing and yeah, the John Carpenter soundtrack was dead on.

Any filters used? Even on the wider shots in the exterior, you had even exposure and sharp focus. I know it's doable, but was wondering if it required any finessing outside the camera?

Cheers, enjoyed your clip.

Re: Oceanside Video

;D Cool! Kewl! With the music off it looks like one of those CSI speed montage in between scenes!

Re: Oceanside Video

Those are some good points everyone.

The Shaky Cam - I know better than this and should have it locked down but was being lazy and 'runnin and gunnin'. Next time, I will not be lazy.

The Color Correction is in total contrast. Not neccasarily on purpose but I was aware of this.

I didnt think Carpenter at the time but now will be thinking of that next time!

As far as EXT shots, I used an ND Grad and Polorizer on a few. Thats what enabled the sky to be visible while maintaining exposure.

Re: Oceanside Video

Nice John! (Ummm, you know this thread is for DVX footage - NOT 16mm film ;) )

All you need are credits and its the start of a Michael Mann flick. 8)

Nice work with acid - Awesome when folks crank out there own sound track!

Re: Oceanside Video

Awesome John, focus/detail on some shots is truly amazing, I think it was water under the pier that got me. The soundtrack rocked! Some parts did seem a little dark on my screen, darker than your previous thumbnail posts. Thanks for sharing :)

Re: Oceanside Video

nice work john, glad to see your work finally! i like the music and the shots were well selected

thanks

Re: Oceanside Video

Thanks John. Great editing and some really solid shots as well. A bit dark on my end, but that could be me...you never know.

Not only was your post enjoyable but educational - the information you provide for afterwards helps a great deal, thanks !

Re: Oceanside Video

It has been confirmed. My settings on my monitor at WORK were way to BRIGHT. So Im working on this and thinking "Yeah, thats a nice level.." only to find out that on a normal calibrated monitor its going to be DARK.

Between Barry and David it figured out. David actually sent me a .DOC on Waveform and Color Bars and all that. To give you an idea of how bright my monitor was, the 11.5 Bar was almost white and the 3.5 and 7.5 were grey and black and not the 'barely distinguishable' hue they should be. I also found out my contrast was too high on Monitor whereas my color bars (The white) were flaring.

I have it almost perfect now (it'll take some time tomorrow) but the wavefrom shows almost a perfect little stairstep.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Its my goal to do better every single time. Ill get busy and see if I cant improve! :)

Re: Oceanside Video

:D

You have no idea how stoked I am now that I can see thigns the way they oughta be seen. Thanks my man!

Re: Oceanside Video

Dude, that vid is SO Lady X! Yeah, it's dark, but you've got that figured out now.

Carpenter rules . . . I might have you loop a composition for me!

Re: Oceanside Video

Have yet to view it John no Windows Media at my disposal (any chance of throwing it up for Quicktime?). If no quicktime, I'll make sure to find a PC I can view it on.

Got a question though... Whatever happened to "Viral Outbreak"? You had me all psyched for the Living Dead... do we still get the Living Dead?

ps - feel free to always share your stuff.
