O7q+ f35

Ok guys, so I just installed the latest Odyssey 7q+ firmware (version 2015.12) today before a shoot. Well, I get to my shoot and everything seems to be working fine. I go to shoot 50p > plug in both SDI-Cables to run dual so that I can access 50p and the Odyssey 7q+ reads "SDI-A only"....even though I have both A and B connected...also on my image I see those weird jagged lines as if I'm not running 50p without dual SDI....Has anyone else encountered this issue with the new Firmware? Can you help Mitch? Thanks in advance guys

I know this doesn't help and I'm not trying to bust your balls(and I don't have an Odyssey), but it's just good practise to NEVER install new software/firmware on a piece of equipment right before a shoot, especially without time to test or a back-up plan.

I know an audio guy who, for years now, has been branching out into other areas he really doesn't belong, like shooting, camera rentals, TelePrompTer rentals, etc. A few years ago on the morning of a TelePrompTer job, he does one of the dumbest things he's probably ever done(and there is a loooong list), he changes the OS on the laptop with the prompter software without even checking that they were compatible, which as you can probably guess, they were NOT. Long story short, after showing up on the shoot and nothing worked, someone else(a guy in town that actually is a legit prompter op/supplier) had to be called in to "save the day".

I hope that your shoot didn't get ruined, but please heed this warning to save yourself some pain and stress next time.

I did get this error when I booted 7Q before i booted the F35. I found the best way to get 7Q and F35 working nicely is to boot the F35, which is quick. Then start up the 7Q, sometimes I will let the discs mount, then shut down and restart the 7Q if anything is funny. I also found switching the camera between 24p and 50p can reset the 7Q if it's not reading the signal.

I honestly found 7Q to be fairly solid switching between 50p and 24p all day with new firmware as long as you boot camera before 7Q.

Yea I normally would do exactly that but was I was so damn busy ripping and running that I didn't have time to test it before hand. Totally never doing that again! Lesson learned no doubt.

Hey thanks...In my sleep I think I may have figured it out. I don't think there was anything wrong. I think whats happening is the new firmware allows you to monitor the signal from each port....there was a button that said both A/B and when I would hit it the 7q+ would switch to a side by side double screen image of what I was shooting. Well when I got back to my office my 50p came out just fine. So, in short I think the new firmware allows you to monitor your images from each SDI port simultaneously (if that makes sense) hens the double screen (side by side) when enabling the a/b button...Which could be a cool feature once you wrap you head around it but could be very scary if you're new to the feature. The part that made me believe I wasn't getting a dual signal was the red label at the top of the screen that read "A-only"....but If Im right this is only referring to the primary SDI-port you choose to monitor from...this isn't referring to the signal. Am I correct here Mitch? If so then the only thing is I need to figure out a way to combine them when running dual instead of looking at a side by side image of each SDI-port.

Yea I actually toggled back and forth between them both to see if that was the problem. But, I think I solved the issue which isn't an issue at all just a new way that 7Q+ monitors each of the SDI ports. I explained it all in reply to yachacha. It came to me in my sleep lol. But thanks to all of you guys for your reply. I always appreciate the support and super detailed info I get on this forum. Even if the feedback "busts my balls" I know its coming from a good place. Feels like a small tight knit family here.

Yes 7q is always in dual monitor mode at 422 now. Ive also noticed tears in playback that do not show up in recorded file.

Yea I noticed the tears too...freaked me out at first. In terms of the dual monitor mode I wish there was an option to switch that on/off

Sorry, been away from DVXUSER for a few days.

Yes, recording in HD Apple ProRes 422 mode now includes Dual-Stream Monitoring, which allows one to view two signals at once while recording one. This is useful for matching cameras, monitoring secondary coverage, viewing a "viewfinder" feed with information overlay while recording a clean signal from the same camera, etc. You can always choose to ignore the second signal if you prefer to leave the SDI B IN connected when switching to 50p 422.

Sorry fellas, this is an "issue" only to F23 & F35 owners, and I don't think we're going to change it. Just ignore the second signal info when switching to this mode.

As for playback issues, please report these to cdsupport@convergent-design.com.

I know there are a few small issues with the 7Q and F35 I hope this doesn't deter any new users as I stand by the 7Q is the best modern system for the F35. Using dual cables and switching between Prores 444 23.98fps and 442 50p fps is simple now. Once you use this system for a few hours you get used to the occasional glitch and on the recording side it is rock solid which is most important.

Hey Mitch thanks for getting back. So, looks like I was wrong about everything being ok. I took a closer look at my 50p footage after downloading the 2015.12 firmware and my footage has this strange interlaced look on objects with sharp edges as if my dual stream recording isn't working...Also I shot more 50p footage today and the Odyssey is reading only my SDI-A even when I have both SDI cables connected while in 50p 422...Please help...is there a way I can go back a couple firmwares? I didn't have this issue before until I downloaded the 2015.12 firmware.

Important status update

Important status update

I must let the F35/F23 crowd know some important information. With the introduction of the 2015.11 firmware we have lost the ability to properly record Apple ProRes using 1.5G-SDI dual-link 422 1080p50 (F35) or 1080p60 (F23) on the Odyssey7Q and Odyssey7Q+. The F35 and F23 are the only cameras that are effected as they are the only ones that transport this signal in this form. We will look into ways to bring this function back in future firmware updates.

This information was in fact included in the Release Notes that accompanied 2015.11. We are very sorry for anyone who discovered this issue in shot footage.

It is possible to roll back your Odyssey firmware to an earlier version. If you wish to do so but do not have an older firmware stored on your computer, it can be downloaded from our website.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and we do hope to bring back the functionality in the future. You can still record from the F35 and F23 in Apple ProRes 4:4:4 at frame rates below 30p as well as record in DPX.

I have to say Mitch, I have rarely seen such attentiveness to clients as you display. It is indeed admirable.

Hey Mitch first I'll say is thank you so much responding. Im happy to hear that was the issue and its not something wrong on my end. I will be going back to 2015.8 until that issue is fixed. Thanks Mitch

Have you guys experience problems shooting prores 4444? The video levels get clipped in the computer (they show up fine in the Odyssey). I've submitted a ticket to CD but just wanted to hear if anyone else has tried this.

I just tried dpx vs prores 444 12bit (Resolve, levels set to data and also tried just pulling down highlights) and noticed the same highlight clipping. Speedgrade was the same for the prores.

Yea I experienced that same issue as well. Keep us posted on your findings resolving that issue
