NTU invention allows clear photos in dim light

Exiting... and graphene displays will be cheaper and better too, as far as I have gathered... Many scientists say we're entering the graphene age, leaving the silicone...

Cool. What kind of dynamic range can these new sensors get and are they global shutter like a CCD? Am I correct in asking these questions? Those two properties are dependent on the sensor correctt?

Should I hold off buying a C100 now having read this?

Do you think those %$£&*"£$" at Canon are going to update their cameras again because of this?

You should be safe for a while if you buy a C100. Between now, development and whatever will lead to economically viable and feasible mass production of sensors and displays your C100 will have pay many times for himself. I hope...

I remember people "holding off" on the HMC150 to wait for the 3k for $3k Red Scarlet.

There's too much we don't know about this sensor -- there are probably issues we can't imagine. Could anyone have imagined "jello vision" back in the CCD days?

First this sensor needs to be designed for a product, then the sensors need to be produced in volume, then the product needs to be produced in volume, then the product needs to sell and not suck. Meaning -- if this sensor lives up to the inventor's press release -- you're looking at something three to five years away (or longer if there's no driving competition).

Yes, this is exciting stuff -- but -- keep it in perspective.

LOL! My standard response to such "breakthroughs" is: yeah, riiiiiight...

How many of us have not heard this song and dance before? Take foveon sensors that were supposed to revolutionize everything? And these are actually in production cameras, and amount to a big fat nothing. I'll believe it when I see it. There's a million such breakthroughs announced every year, and nothing comes of it. It's like running back home excited from the 7-11 because you bought a lottery ticket and you'll win the super lotto... suuure, riiiiight.

This is not even something that has been put into a production prototype. Wake me up when there's a camera that has this sensor in it - which will be years and years if ever, and even when it does arrive it could be locked up by one company a la Sigma and foveon.

Every other day they have a "revolutionary" new "breakthrough" - it's a bunch of vaporware. It's only real when it's in a camera that's widely available for purchase. Research announcements like this are worse than the "cure for cancer" we hear ever other day from various biotech hopefuls. It almost never pans out, 99.9999999% of the time. Yawn.
