NTG-3 and GH2

NTG-3 is XLR mike using phantom power.
SO, you need either preamp with phantom power + cable.
Or dedicated recorder ala Z4n or DR100 (preferably with preamp also).

Buy Tascam DR100 in this case.
You did right. Good mike is always better than good recorder (as they progress fast).
Later you could add Sound Devices mixer.

It is not $100 more expensive, as it is not easy (if possible) to find it for $400.
Current lowest ebay price is $600+shipping.
But Fostex has best preamps from all this three recorders.
It is just more bulky, etc.

May be, especially if it has dedicated line input. As I know Sony PCM and Olympus LS are more highly regarded by pros in this field.
USB Pre 2 looks very good.
But he did not have money to buy both recorder and preamp, so it is better to start with TR100 and look later on improvements.
Or Fostex if he has money on it.

DR-07 has a dedicated line in. I wish there's a simple portable recorder that has line-in and provides USB power out. It would be a nice complement to USBPre2. Keep the cost down by skipping its own preamp component. Hehe.

I think it is easy to find 5v to 1.5v or 3v stabilizers. Try to look at ebay.
Or may be just LiIon batteries in AA form factor.

I have the Marantz 661 and it's much better than the tascam Dr100 in terms of handling and build quality. I haven't done a direct noise floor test of the preamps of both tho. Can't comment about the foxtex, I know they are good working horse, you see then in almost every production.
