I usually use my c100 as a camcorder setup using the WDR profile. What I mainly record is local beauty pageants and volleyball matches, what would be the downside of adding some sharpness and how do I do it?
You'd do it by setting up a custom profile, keep it wide dr if you want and up the in camera sharpness. (or do it in post, but I'm assuming you're talking about in camera)
The benefits are... It looks sharper. It can give a seemingly cleaner, more crisp picture out of the camera.
Detriments are that over sharpening often makes things look much more video like and a bit fake. Also, you can't unsharpen as easily as you can sharpen, so if you're looking for something sharper it's generally better to do it in post where you can get it exactly where you want it.
In camera it can also sometimes cause sharpening artifacts.
Like when anything else, you need to pick a personal preference. Shoot some tests and decide what look you like best.
Keep in mind it's not actually adding sharpness/detail, I believe it just increases contrast in your edges to create apparent sharpness... Not real sharpness.
Most people like the image with sharpness turned down a bit.
