Nothing but P2 Issues...

Hi all:

In the past month, we have run into two unexplained potentially project killing P2 issues and nobody seems to have a clue as to why they happened or how to prevent them from happening again.

Incident #1
Did a single camera interview. Shot five cards, shot them in 720 24PN. Four of them work perfectly but one of the cards shows up with the dreaded red X, which means the clip is permanently defective. We have no idea what might have caused this but basically it renders the shoot unusable. Very frustrating.

Incident #2
We recently did a large tabletop shoot for a high profile film. Brought in a great DP, shot it in our studio. We shot with the HVX-200 to 8GB P2 cards. We shot in 1080, not sure which flavor but it was definitely 1080. Everything on the shoot went well, the producer then handed the P2 cards to our P2 person who does all of the transfers, backups and archives. He transfered from the P2 cards and burned DL DVDs, verified that all of the folders were there, then dumped the cards for other shoots. He then archived the DVD to DLT tape. Our normal backup/archiving procedure here is DVD-R DL and DLT tape and to hard drives whenever we can but we ALWAYS archive to at least two of these three formats.

Here's where it gets weird. An editor is trying to edit the piece together and is bringing in the P2 files into their editing system (FCP 5.04). Some of the files that the producer shot were "not there". We went back to the DVD and looked and found the following, which is very strange. The icon folder has six thumbs, the audio folder has the expected 24 files, the clip folder contains the correct number of .xml files. But the video folder is missing three of the six clips. They are just gone. I am confident that our P2 guy did not error in transfering the media from the cards, we always, always, always only copy over the content folder and the last clip.txt file. We would never go in and only transfer certain files or the folders they are in.

How can this have happened? The producer is quite upset and the P2 guy and I are stumped. Are the thumbnails created at the same time the video clip is written to the P2 card? Because the thumbnails are there so we would like to think that the clips were there and were written to the card. We just can't figure out how the three out of six files could have disappeared if all we do is copy over the content folder and the last clip.txt file? Also, in looking at the times of day in the metadata, the three files that are missing are not missing chronologically, they are missing in random order.

The producer is going to have to do a reshoot and all of us here are very spooked to even use the P2 cameras now. Almost everything we do is a one shot deal, most of the people we interview cannot afford to give us a re-interview, we shoot props, Oscars, tabletop with material that cannot be re-obtained. We own three of the HVX-200s, 6 8GB cards and three P2 stores and my boss is even talking about dumping it all and just shooting HDV (be still my stomach!)

Any advice to figure out what might have happened and how we can prevent this from happening again? We are close to having to dump all of our P2 gear if we cannot figure out why these random things are happening and how to prevent them. Seems strange since we shot a pilot with the three P2 cameras, shot hundreds of cards and backed up, edited and used all of the footage without incident. We have the P2 workflow down, it's just glitching for us and we don't know why.

Love the cameras but if we can't get 100% reliability with the P2 cards/files, we are going to have to dump it and go with (shudder) HDV.

All the best,

Dan Brockett

Can you correlate the defective p2 folders to a single card?

Your workflow looks good. I'm wondering if it makes better sense from my standpoint to open and export the p2 cards immediately in HD Log, and export to movie files.

Let us know.

Make sure you have the latest firmware updates on those 8 Gig P2 cards. I was on a shoot and had 4 cards; after dealing with all kinds of mysterious problems, (even thought I had a bad hard drive since my transfers were stalling, etc. etc.)

I found out about the driver update around 4AM of fighting with it all night. 2 of the 4 cards had the old firmware. We upgraded and shot/dumped footage subsequently with no further problems.

Of course, the one issue is that the firmware updater is PC only.

It would be appropriate to get a Mac updater as well.

I think that there are some gremlins that even Panasonic cannot answer about these cameras and p2 cards. It is a great camera and should be great for a while, but they certainly didn't have an answer for the error messages on my camera. I am becoming leary of what we have now. We shouldn't have to check everything we shoot immediately.

Hi David

Unfortunately, no, cannot track it to a single card because we did not keep detailed records about which physical card was used in each instance.

We are getting to the point where we are going to start using the P2 Viewer software on a laptop to view every individual P2 file as we shoot it but that is a real pain and much more time-consuming and labor intensive.

Jgrimson, how does one check the firmware version on each card? And how does one update it if it needs to be updated?

Maverick, I agree with you, I am so paranoid to shoot P2 right now that I don't know what to do. We invested a large chunk of cash into three of the HVX-200s and cards and P2 Stores but if they are not reliable, how can I use them?

Best,

Dan

Here's what you need to check..

Open your CONTENTS/CLIP folder, check the file size of the clips that you are unable to import. (not the red-x ones.. the ones you see, but wont come up)

If they are close to 4 gigs, and you are using a FAT 32 Hard Drive (most of the ones these days are formatted FAT32) you will have an issue....

When you import the file into FCP it gets larger than 4GB and wont be readble by a FAT32 Drive..

Easily solved by using a mac formated drive such as the one built into any MAC laptop, or just get an external one, and format it with a MAC as a MAC drive.

I had this problem.. and I nice person here told me to COPY the contents of the P2 Card (or your backup: Contents/lastclip.txt) onto your MAC INTERNAL Hardrive. Then import from their, and make sure your CAPTURE SCRATCH is ALSO the MAC HARDRIVE..

Hope that works for you.. Let me know..

Hi Justin:

Tried this on my G4 laptop, using the laptop drive but it just doesn't work. Thanks for the advice but I think that somehow these files became corrupted as they were being shot somehow?

Thanks,

Dan

Sounds like...

Sounds like...

...a similar problem I had a couple months ago with a differnet (but similar) media, the CompactFlash cards. The problem was moisture.

I took one card and camera (A Canon 20D) out of a cold car one afternoon here in Portland, OR. Shot right away under hot lamps. Everything seemed ok, except for a weird Error 99 message that dissapeared after I restarted the camera. Later, I downloaded all my images. All thumbnails were there, and everythikng looked fine. Problem was almost 20% of all shots (in an odd sort of sequence) were damaged, only the thumbnails remained OK.

Could this have been moisture/condensation issue with your P2 cares?

I am strictly using a FS-100, and have my own issues. Ah...the joys of early tech adoption!

It is a pretty cryptic site and Panasonic sure did not seem to alert people well on this "frimware" update. However, I will confirm that early in May I shot on 4 rental 8 Gig cards and 2 needed the update. And yes you need a PC laptop to do it, we were lucky to have both PowerBook and PC on location. It seemed to solve the problems at the time.

I'm not aware that this was ever an issue with 4Gig cards, just 8 Gig cards. Of course, if they ever change the firmware again it would be nice to post a notice on all the trafficed user sites. Maybe everyone knew about this but we didn't until we had problems.

I take it then that you place the 8Gb p2 card in the PC Card slot of a PC.

Download the firmware update, and then run it?

Yes, as I remember that's what we did. It tells you when you insert the P2 card what firmware version it is. If it is an older version then I'd definielty update it. I can't remember which is the current version though.

Dan- I don't know if this is relevant to your "red x" issue of not . . . I am using a P2Store/PC setup and I've never checked. But, is it possible any of those missing or corrupted files were split (and spilled over to the second P2 card during the record)?

Maybe that's not appropriate to your issue but in the heat of things it can get a little busy--I created issues like this for myself in the early going. I have no experience with FCP but it would might be an interesting test if you were able to burn back two of the adjacent DVD's to P2's. Of course. given the capacity of single sided DVD's that could be a problem when working off of 8gig cards too.

Just thinking out loud . . . my apologies if it does not add anything to your investigation.

Dan, I have PMd Jan Crittenden and invite her to this discussion. I'm sure she would want to help you with this problem, as its worrying.

Also, I frankly had no idea there was any firmware to be updated on the P2s. It's completely idiotic that the updates are Win only, since so many people using these cameras are running macs. I don't keep a spare dell laptop around 'just in case'.

Jan: can you address the no-mac-updates thing? I don't have a wintel box with a PCMCIA slot - am I just screwed? (i.e. I have to find a friend with one?).. and what's with the no-apple-updaters?

;)

Have you reviewed the clips that are there? Does it seem that all of the footage is there and not missing? Sometimes the spanned clip is rejoined and thus you have a missing clip. It is very hard to tell from your description what it could be as from your description it seems as though all should be fine.

Sobefore I went out and shot again I would spend some time trying to make this phenomena reoccur and if you can't then you have to go back to the particular shoot in question.

Did you delete any clips on set? Is all of your time code continous. How are you copying the files over.

Anyhow it does sound as though you need to do some research as to why it is is happening, we can only make conjecture.

Best,

Jan

Hi David,

Don't think so, it is more complicated than you think to make it all work and trying to do an update on a make and not have the MAC put its thumbprint in the soup is nearly impossible. Once it does, you are toast. As an example t=with the download fils for the SDX, if you open them instead of just saving them and then letting the camera read it, the camera will not read it. The factory is so PC oriented, it would be very hard to deal with maintaining a set of tools for both sides and maintain the fast track that we are on for the various products that we are bring to the industry.

Sorry,

Jan

If I may suggest a slight alteration to your workflow that has saved me and may have saved you in this instance. Redundancy is the key to P2 security. Not just redundancy in media, but also redundancy in process. If you are burning DVD's directly off the card as your post suggests, and then backing up the DVD's the DLT then you have no redundancy for the actual copy process from the card. It is much more secure to do both backups from the origional files (the card) then it is to make a copy of a copy potentially propigating a problem rather than overcoming it. This is why I requested a dual destination copy feature from P2 Genie that Anders gratiously included.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.
