(not) seeing RED!

Shooting DVX100B for work. We shot an interview a few weeks ago where subject was wearing red and black, and along the line where two colors met there was pixillation (along the red border). Figured it was the computer LCD, so I moved on... This week shot another interview (subject wearing RED) and the same pixillation problem appeared again!... My question is this: could the CCD responsible for RED in my cam be the culprit, or is this totally implausible and there is another explanation. Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm going to assume, without having seen a screen grab, that what you're seeing is DV compression of a strong amount of red. This is just something that tends to happen with standard def 4:1:1 video. Since you said it is mainly happening around edges, it's safe to say that this is indeed the problem.

What you can do to help combat this is:

Next time you shoot a subject with lots of red in the image, tone down the chroma level on the dvx.

You can also try to do whatever you can (best option) to include as little amount of bright reds as possible in the shot.

Also, if your NLE offers such a tool, you can use something called a Chroma Blur tool which will help smooth out the pixelation of the reds. You'll want to adjust the horizontal blur within the tool. This will help the reds and smooth out other elements of the image as well.

Get back with some screen grabs and let us know how it's going!

I tried applying chroma smoothing 4:1:1 from FCP filters and it worked until I rendered the clip and then the pixellation was back. Any ideas?

Hmm...that's odd that it came back, despite working in the preview. What were your render/compression settings?

I'll be honest, I've had this happen too, so you might have to tinker with your render settings to try to squeeze the most image information into the file size you're shooting for.
