Not really Shallow DOF and other debates

these grabs were actually from a vx-2000, but I was tinkering in photoshop, and I decided that the dof needed to be much more shallow.

what do y'all think?

I'll get some good dvx grabs and edits on here soon. don't you worry.

I was just messing around in photoshop. I figured, "well, it might look SLIGHTLY better this way" so I did it. It was just out of boredom. but I think that for not doing it optically, and making it happen in under two minutes, I'd say it's not bad.

yeah, .. i dont know. getting a shallow DOF from a wide shot like that is like trying to squeez grape juice out of an apple.

Once again, I'm not using it for anything. I understand that a wide shot doesn't particulary need shallowness, nor is it necessary. I was just messing around with my freehand skills in photoshop.

Can you try it on a close-up, that may be interesting... could you do the same with motion video though?

yah, i thought i was going to see an extreme close up, but i was wrong.... there is no shallowness in that shot. sorry to say.

2 minutes a frame aint bad for how many seconds is this shot? you could even like do some wacky rack focus's to blow people's minds....like check this photoshop out.

there actually IS some "shallowness" to the picture, but not much at all. Like other's said, it's a really wide shot with LOTS of stuff in the back. I was just trying to put a little more focus on stuff in the foreground like the shoe. and this isn't something I was planning on doing with VIDEO, I was bored and curious, so I decided to mess around in photoshop. and if anybody else wants to get on here and complain about how you can't do this with a shot like the one I got....I KNOW. The shot wasn't originally intended to do that.

bottom line: I was editing a STILL IMAGE, not VIDEO, and I found it to be quite fun.

dude, you post something on here to get critiqued, not to ***** at others for critiquing you. when you post a thread that says shallow DOF, i would expect just that. sorry for telling you what i think......

it's a cool idea, but the guy's head just doesn't look right. Although he IS out of focus, the outline is too crisp. Rather than just selecting the actor in photoshop and bluring the selection, it would be more effective to make him a different layer and blur the entire layer. That way there wouldn't be such a crisp outline that would stand out like that.
