not possible to reassign movie record button to shutter button???

On the A7s, does anyone know if it's possible to reassign the movie record button to the shutter button???

The location of the movie record button feels quite awkwardly placed on the side for me.
And it would be ideal if a setting existed on the A7s that would allow us to reassign the movie record button to the shutter button.

It just feels more natural pressing the shutter button to record movies (as on the GH4) rather than the tiny little button off to the side. I keep fumbling for it.

That's the first thing Sony should fix in the first firmware update: allow the shutter button to start video recording when in Movie Mode (currently disabled, throwing an error dialog).

Yes I wonder who is the jerk that design that record button on the side like that ,so stupid.

I really dislike the Movie record button position. It's very hard to get your thumb over it and it. For me the camera overall is uncomfortable to shoot with handheld.

The offside position is a relic of stills vs video needs in the nex predecessors. Nex 7 had it closer to center and people often pressed it by mistake until sony allowed it to be disabled in a firmware update. On later cameras sony moved it to the side.

I agree theres no reason why shutter release shouldnt start video recording in dedicated movie mode. I guess they thought it might be confusing if you also allow movie recording in a nonmovie mode. Its unnecessary rigidity / consistency.

Then again Sony has done many weirder analrentative things. Its their way to get us to upgrade and buy up.

The record button position on this camera is beyond idiocy. Not being able to use the shutter button in MOVIE mode to start recording is almost as bad as the actual record button position. "Annnnnnd, ACTION! Wait....hold on I'm trying to find the record button! Just a second. OK there it is.... CUT!"

I agree, the movie record button is in a most awkward position. It's almost as if the designer doesn't want you to push it.
So PLEASE SONY, ENABLE MOVIE RECORDING WITH THE SHUTTER BUTTON!

I think that the direction this should take really is just that every button and function on (all) cameras should be re-assignable, unless there is some sort of technical or mechanical reason why a given button can't be re-assigned.

That said, can anybody tell me if the APS-C function can be assigned to a button? It would be really handy to be able to use this without going into a menu - like a built in tele-extender function that could be invoked at will.

I couldn't agree more with you on that. All buttons should be customizable.

I do not see it as a feature needing a new model but should apply to all.
This is something they should do in firmware.

However, the dedicated record button size and location needs a new body.

I do agree that all buttons/functions should be customizable, especially some kind of custom menu that you can add options that are used frequently. Also, I'm probably one of the few people that do not really care about assigning the record feature to the shutter button. I have assigned the MOVIE function(start record) to custom button 3 and feel like that works perfect.

A high ranking Sony Product Manager addresses why they CANNOT re-assign the record button to the shutter button in an on-camera interview by Cinema5D:

You can find his answer at 11:37

Basically he says it is due to a system requirement of the A7-series but said they would consider removing that requirement due to market demand in their future products.

I guess like all companies, they have a roadmap to follow and takes a few iterations to make changes to that roadmap.
