That's kind of where I hope to be at by next year in CG. Not to get into the whole thing...

Well, let's assume it's a real person and not CGI for the moment and consider lighting.

The backlighting would generally accent the persons left ear more (screen right) . In CG we would use back surface scattering to bring that out and position the lighting to reflect those qualities.

The backlighting, or lack of, for the hair and ears catch my attention.

One could argue the lighting choices. I don't feel the best choices were made here whether a real portrait or CG.

Or did I just kill another thread?

//Ahhhhh. CGSociety. Pook, damn it. Yeah but I still stand by my post. :)

with all that CG mojo, why would someone really create a "person" that gnarly-looking? ugly people are everywhere, why spend 100s of hours creating another one?

Actually in movies, a guy like this would actually be pretty typical, so yea, that's why you'd create a person that looks like this. In fact there's a guy that looks a lot like this who pops up in a lot of action films, but I don't know his name and it's who I thought it was when I saw it. Also I think the point was to show off the hair making capability.

I think what's interesting about this pic is that whether it's real or cgi, we can't tell the difference one way or the other. Even if Pookie did write, "gotcha. this is my cousin Earl" it wouldn't be that embarrassing of a prank because cgi images can look this convincing.

A lot of these guys are still learning. CG portraits are a good way to practice the skills.
Modeling, texturing and lighting.

Here's another from CGsociety that's a favorite of mine.

Well, after searching this guys website and other work, seems it's the real deal. Err... I mean... real fake deal... it's CGI. This is definitely the most realistic model I've ever seen.

Yea, this is pretty standard fair over had CGtalk etc, thats the kind of level you need to be.

I'm in the same boat as Gord, hopefully I can also one day reach the level.

here is my portfolio (shameless plug):

my cg work

sadly those still models are terrible for actual animations, we still have a loooooog way to go for full motion animation that looks 100% life like.

I just noticed something Anhar, you seem to be quite frikkin' awesome. Just thought I should mention it. Hell, if I could do CG like that I'd never need a location. LOL.
