I've used non-firearm "Non"- guns in a couple shoots and they've workd great (and are cheaper and safer than blanks) however I've always rented them, does anyone know of a dealer that sells them, I've been unable to find anything

Non guns? you mean rubber/resin casts of guns?

I'd imagine airsoft guns would be a lot cheaper.

Mileage may vary (illegal in Canada / some look awful)

also, why is this in the DVX100 subforum?

No, Non-guns are replica firearms used in film and tv that electronically fire small explosive squibs which create “flash and bang.” They do not chamber any bullet or cartridge, do not have moving parts other than the trigger, and do not eject brass casings. Non guns are milled from a solid block of metal, so there is no magazine, chamber, or barrel. They have been used more frequently recently because of how safe they are while still being very realistic. I have had turned out some great results with them and am looking to purchase some.

To answer your question I was posting this here because I shoot all my films with the DVX and this is where I normally post such related topics that don't have a specified forum, guess stunts slipped my mind since its in the NLE section, but anyway, any info would be great

We used to use Non guns on Reno 911 all of the time. They are safe of course but, the cost was higher for the charges as opposed to blanks. The problem that i saw with them is that you can't use fully automatic weapons, or at least I never saw any of them. I have no idea where you could buy them.
I used one on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" that the prop guy had made out of an airsoft gun. It actually looked pretty cool, but he had to fire it so I had a cable running down my leg. Nice and safe though on a live set like that.

What's the point of these? Do they just make a bang and smoke? It seems to me that if it doesn't have the shell ejection and slide movement (the hardest things to replicate in post) it wouldn't be worth the cost over a gun with no moving parts.

The point is not the slide ejection. That is something that will be lost on the normal viewer. the point is the fire and smoke and of course safety.

The thing about the non-guns that I like the most is that they can be used in tighter environments and aren't incredibly loud like real firearms making it easier to do close range stuff

You can also use 8mm blank "non guns". They have permanently plugged barrels and are the legal equivelent of starter pistols (glorified cap guns). They are very safe and can be bought on eBay, I own five of them.

Not intending to be picky, but just clarifying: Non Guns are the trade name of specific patented prop gun. It's not just a non-real gun.

yea, blowback guns like the video are about $100, and have the slider. Add the muzzle in post for a mush more realistic look than smoke pouring out the front.
