Noisy lcd

Hey guys, honestly, can the quality of your LCD panel effect the way your footage looks?

My hpx170 footage looks horrible, noisy, and soft on my Samsung 22" lcd panel but incredible on my buddys MacPro.

Could LCD be the difference?

apparantly there are lots of factors that can make an lcd monitor good or not (native resolution, refresh rate, etc)...not sure which model Samsung you have...also, many lcd's ship with 480i as the default resolution and have to be manually changed in the settings to get optimum pic quality....again, i don't know your setup...good luck man.

Yeah. I hope it's my LCD, because right now I'm more impressed with my original 200 footage than my new HPX170.

Myhpx170 did drop off a shelf though. And hit the ground pretty hard. Would that bump the circuitry and make the camera more noisy? Idk I can't take this noise anymore I've done everything I've used b press, cineV, +4 coring, -4 saturation, nothing works. I have rented the ex1 twice for shoots so far :(

yes, your display can make a difference in how good/bad your footage looks. I think you answered that question yourself in your original post.

I use two monitors and footage looks considerably more noisy on one than the other.

Than I'm just paranoid and it's my monitor then.

Hopefully. I'll post some examples soon.

Do you think Panasonic would allow me to do noise tests alongside on of their newer right off the assembly line 170s? I got mine first week they came out and I swear it's nosier than my friend's 170, which he purchased last week. I'm starting to get paranoid. I didn't pay 5000 for noise.

Try resetting the camera to default values, then shoot some footage and look at it on a plasma 1080p display.

If you still have problems, then it may be an actual camera issue.
In my testing, plasma screens look better with this footage than LCD's, it seems to smooth out the image.

Yes, my 170 was reset and it no longer was a stop faster than a 200A, but the noise improved. I don't know why, and the HD SDI output is noisier than component, but what is recorded is very similar to a 200A.

After years of working with color critical CRT monitors, I am still shocked by the harsh look of LCD displays with their lack of contrast range and digital feel. Resolution of consumer LCD displays is good, but I miss the tonality and organic look of good, properly setup CRT's. Plasmas are closer to CRT's, but still don't have the contrast range.

Thanks everyone the advice.

Dino, when you say "reset", do you mean you initialized the camera using the menu, or you sent the camera into Panasonic and they somehow reset the camera/turned down the gain ect??

By the way here are my settings. I shoot everything in this

CineD
everything zeroed out accept:
Coring+3
chroma level-2
pedestal -8
film color matrix

If you shoot everything in those settings, then.....

Try using other camera settings...... sigh.... Why are you talking about noise when you haven't tried any other settings? Your camera has a lot of tweaking ability. Use it. Experiment and learn your camera before starting a new thread all the time please.

CineD is the noisiest of them by the way.

I totally understand what you're saying.I just don't like the videoish look of the other gammes. They don't leave much tonal gradation in the midtones, which is very important to me, seeing that I do alot of color grading in post.

I was just told that this camera was a dramatic improvement over the hvx. That i would be able to shoot a less noisy CineD. So far, that's not true. It's just as noisy as my original HVX. and it's very very discouraging. The only reason I bought this camera over the EX1 is I was told I could now shoot in the Cine gammas with hardly any noise compared to my HVX.
