Noisy imaging question

Hey guys,

I've got a 7D with a Tamron 17-50mm and sometimes, when I review my footage after filming, I see a lot of noise in the video. It isn't crisp and clear like I want it.

I get it shooting inside and outside, and it is very disconcerting.

Is it an issue with my f/stop or iso? Would an ND filter help for exterior. I'm very new to DP work and any help you all could provide would be appreciated!

Thanx

ND reduces light. Grain is generally from higher ISO, the camera's sensitivity to light.

Are you using manual exposure? Are you using auto ISO?

Jose,

You need to do some research and find out where the sweet spot is for your lens. For example my zeiss 25 does magic at f5.6. Even with the contrast and sharpness set flat on a neutral picture style I still have a lovely sharp saturated image.

Peer reviewed experts including Vincent Laforet have determined that ISO in multiples of 160 are the optimal for this sensor. Start at ISO 160 as well as the optimal f stop for your lens and light or ND as necessary to get proper exposure. White balance properly so you dont have to use up your latitude in post.

Set up a good field monitor and look for areas of shadow. There will be noise in there no matter what ISO, from what I've seen. Pick up a couple of cheap spots with barndoors so you can paint those areas with a little light.

After a lot of practice you'll be able to eyeball a scene and know where the problems are. Preproduction preproduction preproduction.

Hope this helps.

The amount of grain depends on the ISO setting. Like heyrobert said, ISO determines the sensor's sensitivity to light. By doing so, the image quality degrades as the ISO number gets higher. Try sticking with low ISO (< 800 imo) in most situations, unless you desperatelyneed to acquire more light in a dark location.
