Noise in the audio input

Hello, i just bought a DVX100B. I'm very pleased with it but today a sound ingeneer made me notice that the audio input have a strange audio noise in it. Even without a mike attached on it, you can hear a high pitch noise. I 've made some test. This sound is at -60db. I believe that it is normal to have noise at -60db but the problem is that the high pitch makes it very audible. It's approximatively 8000 hz and it's there even if i put the audio level input to 0. But if i choose the internal mike, the sound dissapear. Only the audio inputs suffers from that noise. Also, this sound is only there in "PAUSE" mode, in "STANDBY", the sound disappear. Is that "normal" for a DVX 100 B or does my camera have a problem? Please, if someone could make the test on his camera that would be very useful fo me.

That doesn't seem normal. I am sure the signal to noise ratio of the DVX audio circuit is well in excess of 60db. Plus the fact that it is at 8k only is suspicious. There may be something in the environment that is creating interference. Have you tried it in multiple locations and when running only on the battery? I once had a consumer grade Sennheiser shotgun that would pick up a high pitched tone from certain electrical devices like a boat radar.

In fact, the 8khz is not the only noise, it is the most noticeable. The rest is the "normal" noise that comes when i push up the audio level and that doesn't really disturb. This 8khz noise doesn't come from a mike. I've tested two differents mikes but above all, the noise is already there without any mike and with the audio level set to 0! When i m in level 0, i only hearthe 8khz noise. I've tryed in different environnement, that's not the problem and i'm using batteries. The fact that the noise stop when the camera goes to "standby" proves that it comes from the camera mechanism. I really mean the standby mode, not poweroff. In the standby mode, i can use a mike and hear it on the headphones. But if i hit the record button, the noise arrives.
So, you tell me that there is no such noise in your DXV100B? I really talk about a noise at -60db, you have to pay attention to hear it but in a silence, it's there.

Please, can someone that have the DVX100B make the test to select the mike input, turn the audio level to 0 and listen if he have a 8khz little noise. It's really important to me. I don't want to send it back to panasonic and wait for 3 month for nothing if that's not consider as a default. I wana be sure that it is not present on all the DVX100B. If it is not, that's an argument to make it repair without any discussion. Please, do the test!! :)

Do a search on this forum for similar problems. I recall a thread sometime back on a high pitched "squeal" on some 100a cams that was related to the tape transport.
Hope this helps.

I did the test, I have a DVX 100BP serial starts with DT bought in Aug.2006. I did what you asked and had no "8khz or other little noise" with a tape and without a tape loaded in the transport.

Thank you Bryan. So that's definitely a problem that should be covered by warranty. I return it immediatly to Panasonic. Thanks everyone for the help.

Have you listened to the audio off of the timeline yet through good speakers? Is it coming from the playback system or is the noise actually recorded in the audio.

Take a look and see if you can isolate if it is recorded in the audio, or if it is just playback on the camera speaker/headphone circuit. I do know that the headphone circuit seems noisier than the real recording.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Yes, i have captured my audio on Final cut pro and heard the same noise. I don't suspect my FCP audio system since i use it since years without any problems. The noise comes definitely from the camera and is recorded. :crybaby:
