Re: Noir Short

They look good. I especially like the one of the two guys in the car, although it could be a touch brighter.

Re: Noir Short

very nice. Id like to see some more interesing angles. What kind of lights did you use, settings etc.

Re: Noir Short

The guys in the car capture looks darker than it does in the film. The guys moving and talking makes it work. As Robert Mitchum said about the B noirs he appeared in, "The A pictures got the lights, we lit our films with cigareete butts".

We were emulating the look of the 40's noir filx so most angles reflected the chest high, straight on angles favored at the time. I'll post some more caps tomorrow showing some of the high angle shots and a "third degree' sequence with lots of forced angles.

We shot at the old Municipal Courts Building, recently vacated, but still full of forties-style architecture, holding cells, actual squad rooms and massive hallways. Exteriors were shot on the streets of St. Louis - still very 40-ish in many places and in a restored apartment building with Art-Deco decor.

Lighting was natural, streetlights and a four light Arri kit. I used the John Alton minimalist style of lighting - lots of back and side light, virtually nothing fromt the front, angled shadows, shadows from blinds, dark backgrounds. The DVX100 performed like a champ. Shot at 24PA and cut it on the Avid.

I dig 'em. Very noir (for lack of a better expression.)

Re: Noir Short

Awesome shots! And the costumes and makeup seem very authentic... they give it a real Noir feel. Post some more grabs!
