FS7: No simultaneous 4k video out

My FS5 has some pretty annoying limitations like not being able to view 4k video out of SDI and HDMI. The only work around is to send the raw SDI data out which allows you to then see a feed from the HDMI out simultaneously. This has been a big complaint from the community since day 1, but Sony has said it’s a hardware limitation and can’t be fixed via firmware. To my surprise, now that we’re using FS7 mkii’s at work, they share the same limitation...

Funny thing is, when people would complain about this, other users would tell them to upgrade to the FS7 if they wanted these pro features lol. I wanted to see a feed on my gratical via sdi and simultaneously record 4k to a Shogun, and when in the video out settings it only lets me choose one or the other.

I need 4k to the Inferno via HDMI and any signal to the gratical via SDI, but it won’t allow both at once.

In those sorts of situations I've just had to drop back to the good 'ole Sony VF/Loupe arrangement that came with the camera. Now if the FS7 could have 6G SDI out like the new PXW-Z280 wouldn't that be nice!

Yes , Its a drag . I wanted to record a 4K Pro res backup recently (on an Odyssey) on a shoot where we were feeding SDI monitors to clients and to a tech and it was a drag to realize I didn't have the SDI. I'm not sure if I could have cross converted out of the Odyssey to send out a monitor friendly HD SDI signal and I should try it. That's something to try with the Inferno as well. At least i had the VF though.

But isnt FS7 II 4k hdmi limited to 8bit?

It is. In this case the client wants slog3 in 4k 24p. The Shogun is really just a backup and also client monitor. Today I also realized that in 24p I lose the viewfinder lut when sending 4k out To HDMI.

Here's a quirk of the fs7- when the "Lens Distortion Compensation" is engaged you can't have a LUT on the VF image. No idea why. Also, if the LDC is engaged it can only be disengaged with a Sony lens mounted to the camera, and one that makes use of LDC. If you forget to turn off the LDC and you are out in the field without a Sony lens, you are stuck with it engaged. Maybe it doesn't matter that LDC is on when using lenses for which LDC is not possible, not certain.

Also worth noting that "Lens Disruption Compensation" is only available in HD, not UHD. Which means if shooting 4k with the 18-110 f4 from Sony that you no longer have a true par focal lens as it relies on the electronics for that. little ditties with this camera. I do love it, it gets asked for lots..... but I find myself daydreaming of selling and moving to one of the new RED EPIC cameras.

To the OP - is there any SDI out of the Inferno? daisy chain-able?

Wes I think you may find that incorrect. The 18-110 comes with a info slip telling you to turn compensation OFF with that lens for the FS7. I and a few others have found no problem with the parfocal aspect of this lens with the compensation turned OFF, none whatsoever, tested it quite solidly. Sony has told me that the 'Compensation' is purely for optical barrel and pincushion distortion in some of the lenses such as the 18-105, that I have and will confirm it's bad without the comp on. Plus the 18-105 no good for 4K. All other features like CA and corner fall-off corrections are done through the electronic connections whenever any of the electronic E-Mount lenses are attached. The lens compensation menu is purely to correct optical distortion nothing else. So far we cannot disagree with what we have been told as in practice we have seen no issues on any of our FS7 shoots with the 18-110 with the comp OFF. Added to which we don't lose the VF LUT capability when you don't want to burn your LUT in. In fact the lens comp is always off. That way we avoid the issue mentioned above where you can get caught with it turned on and can't turn it off because you don't have an E-Mount lens to enable the switch over. If you use the 18-110 lens on an A series camera such as the A6500 it's a different story, you must have the Compensation turned on or 'Auto as Sony puts it. The A series need for the optical comp can be seen in cinema5D's review of the 18-110.
