C100: No Røde VideoMicro Love with the C100

I picked up the recently released Røde VideoMicro microphone as an on-camera mic for the C100 when shooting b-roll and wanting to keep the profile, weight and bulk to a minimum. This little mic tics all of the right boxes, Røde is an excellent audio company, this thing is tiny, includes the Lyre mounting system, which is top notch stuff, ask any pro sound mixer. Also includes a Rycote furry windshield, pretty great deal for $59.00. Seemed perfect for shooting handheld b-roll, being a tourist, and any other time you don't want to attach the tall C100 handle/mic. I am disappointed to say that it doesn't work. The Røde is passive and uses a tiny voltage charge that the 3.5mm mic inputs on most DSLRs provide but apparently the 3.5mm mic input jack on the C100 doesn't provide that small voltage output because I get nothing. Tried it on my 5D MKIII, works fine but I really wanted it for my C100. So be aware of this when you see a cool ad for the VideoMicro. So bummed.

Yeah almost got caught out on this a few weeks ago, someone wanted a cheap mic recommendation for some simple DSLR videos so I said just get the VideoMic Go, but then realised they'll need to check their DSLR to make sure it provides power on the 3.5mm.

Something most (non video) people wouldn't know about.

Obviously the more expensive ones run on 9v battery, but then you are adding weight and bulk.

Yes, that is the same conclusion I arrived at. I can just put the handle on and use the internal mic or my AudioTechica AT-875R, but then it begins looking too pro. No side handle and this little mic, you can still pass for a tourist which is very handy for some places I shoot in. Frustrated.

I'll go one further, I bought this a couple weeks ago to use with my Ronin M. I cut the base of it so I could fit it on the C100 top shoe mount. Then plugged it in... Needless to say I did myself out of £50.:laugh:

oo thanks for the heads up, was looking at getting it too. Am surprised, thought the c100 gave enough power for my Rode lav mic from the 3.5mm - or maybe I imagined that?

Not sure, I can't see it in the specs. I believe the C100 mic input is purely passive. Kind of dumb that the cheaper 5D MKIII is not but the more expensive C100 is?

The video mic pro has a small profile too and runs off a 9volt battery. I find that mic to be exactly what I need for the type of shooting you're describing - despite using it on my a7s instead of a c100.

Shame to hear about the VideoMic Go, although I invested in the Rode Wireless Filmmaker kit. Paid around $420 AUD and used it on a few projects now and it's great for the price point. If I want bare minimum I throw on my VideoMic Pro and that works a treat too. Rode has never let me down.

I got burned with it, too. I bought one for my C300 just to have as a little nat mic instead of having to rig up one of my old Sony mics from one of my old Betacams. The funny thing is, I actually read a review where the user said he was using it with a C100. I got an RA # from B&H, but then drug my feet and passed the return window. At least it was only like $50...
