No place for the D300s?

I'm new here, though I've been reading along for a while. I'm a Canadian novelist and magazine journalist who has had a life-long love of video. The reason for this post, besides the hello, is that I have a question about the camera-specific forums. I notice the D90, the GH1, the 5DMkII and even the 7D have their own forums, but not the D300s.

Just wondering why. I hope it's not because someone believes the D300s video is not up to snuff, or too similar to the D90 to warrant its own place, because I don't believe either is true. I will be getting a D300s shortly, and I hope to contribute to conversations here about the camera, and I will have questions. I'm just hoping there will be a place for me, and others like me.

Cheers

Maybe they should just retitle this section Nikon D90 & D300s.
I think that would be appropriate considering their similarity of image quality for video.
Jason RAmsey?

What makes you guys say that the D90, D5000 and D300s have the same video quality?

D90 and D5000 are absolute the same, D300s is litle (unfortunately just litle) better, but stil weak to compare 5D or 7D...

after a year we are still waiting for firmware for D90... (manual control) and NOTHING changed:(

Cant speak for the D300, but we tested the d90 and d5000 under controlled situations and also in outdoor reallife scenarios. Except for a swivel Lcd, lens motor and a different video out cable jack, the D90 and d5000 are the same under the hood.
I might have missed out on some other external differences here, but essentially, the same sensor size and performance. The tech sheet say theyre the same. The tests we did and res charts confirms it.

@xcm:
The 5D and 7D may technically have a better image "quality" but depending on the look you're after, the D300s might be "better". Actually, the look of the 7D is not appealing to me at all except maybe for a documentary, a reality show or some other "real world" theme.

@teddybear:
I'm just saying that the D300s' "quality" is definitely better than the other two.

That is also what I conclude after seeing the samples. Is the stair stepping due to line skipping still there? Can the displacement map trick work on the 300?

Or does the diff sensor size produce a different stairstep pattern?

Well if by look you mean blur and color grading...that can be done in the post. I'd tather have a good crisp image to work with. It's probably pretty easy to get that D90 look with the help of simple filters...and I know exactly how that look looks, I have one myself.

But I think it would be a waste of admin/mod effort to create a D300s forum. It would have to get over crowded and chaotic to justify the split. But because of nikons decision to let the D90 die without ever knowing the joy of manual controls, there's not much going on here anymore. Perhaps they can rename this forum to D300s one day, when everybody ditched their D90 for good.

hehe, YES! It is subjectiv! I love D90 looks also... BUT ! there is no MANUAL CONTROL! and no 1080p!! To tell the true I would choosen canon 5D if I do not have many nikon lenses... now I am waiting for something better VIDEO from Nikon.

Im sure after some time all canon,nikon,pentax DSLR's will be under their respective forums ,theres no reason to start something like this ,id say some of you are seriously bored.

I haven't seen stairstepping myself, and when you apply the resample filter that fixes the stairsteps in D90 footage, it actually makes them in D300s footage--so it's definitely not like D90 footage. Here's a short I shot the other night--you can watch in HD if you like. I don't see any stairstepping, but let me know if I'm missing anything.

Very nice footage but nowhere did I see anything that might produce stairstepping. Go shoot some buildings or highlines at 45 degree angles if you want to check stairstepping. Sunsets at the beach look good but there's nothing there to stairstep.

That's great footage, Mark. I don't see any stairstepping either, in any D300s footage I've seen.

I also wanted to share this video that was just posted on Vimeo, which really shows off the quality of the camera.

I'm excited by what I'm seeing.

Mark,

That footage I ALREADY downloaded yesterday. Thats EXACTLY the footage i was watching that made me conclude the d300 was better! thanks for chiming in on this thread.

I've been meaning to post this question when I viewed this since Zim posted the link.

I was wondering if there was any stairstepping removal procedure you did in post since the images were great looking? What kind of post process did you do? did you grade?

Thanks,

Ted

The video I posted above has had no rendering or other effects applied. I think it's a pretty clean view of what the camera can do.

The only thing I wish now is that someone this accomplished in handling video would do something more people-oriented. I notice that a lot of the videos coming from Canon users, and specifically the new 7D, are very people focused. I'm thinking of the Philip Bloom videos, and this new one on vimeo showing Bejing nightlife: http://vimeo.com/6759220

In contrast, a lot of the videos featuring the D300s are so far very landscape and nature oriented, so it's hard to contrast and compare the footage from each camera. The only person doing consistent work featuring people is Tom Carver, who has been doing a lot of fishing-oriented videos with the D300s. (here's an example: http://vimeo.com/6763817 ). But again it's hard to compare because of the conditions under which he's shooting, although I think he does very well.

Basically I'm saying I wish Philip Bloom, or somebody with Bloom's skills, would take the D300s in hand and do some people-oriented videos so we could see what the camera can do there.

First time I've seen this video. It is very good. Every time I think I'm going to jump ship I see a video like this,,,,when done right the Nikon looks awesome. If not it looks like total crap. I would also like to see more people in some of the samples.

If the demand is there then the forum will adjust to it. I haven't seen a huge amount of stuff shot with the 300S, but for the moment this is as good as place as any to post it.
