All cast members from "Days of our Lives" have been released from their contracts. The production may resume at some point in time. If "DOOL" goes, there'll be only Y&R and B&B left (on CBS) and GH on ABC. I recall when there were about a dozen daytime soaps on the air but their ratings sunk and the production costs are becoming prohibitive.

IMO, a pay streaming service ought to have a daily soap without the same daytime restrictions that tie up the noon-to-four broadcasts.

The reason there were so many soaps was because they were the most profitable part of the network lineups (as were the news divisions). And, in order to entice younger viewers, most soaps hired teen - or those who could pass for a teen - actors during the summer months when the school was out and ran story lines with these young actors. But, as the Germans say, it's all zeitgeist. The daytime soaps just don't register with viewers anymore.

Or they came up with entirely new soap operas that tried to appeal to young viewers through younger casting or just purely bizarre concepts. For the former, Sunset Beach comes to mind. For the latter, Passions. Neither lasted very long.

Days was among the leaders in bizarre concepts.

Unless you count the Dark Shadows.

Which was great, albeit before my time.
