"Shifting Display Location during Magnified Focus Assist (EOS C100, EOS C300/EOS C300 PL, EOS C500/EOS C500 PL)
Firmware upgrades for the EOS C500 and EOS C500 PL, EOS C300, EOS C300 PL, and EOS C100 Digital Camera models enable the Magnified Focus Assist function’s magnified view area within the viewfinder and LCD monitor to be shifted to locations other than the center of the screen, allowing users to confirm focus across the entire display area." quoted from cannonrumors

is that it ? I kinda expect more than this.

and Canon Adds one push auto IRIS and one push auto focus to C300, wait, what ? lol ! why !

This isn't it at all for C100 users. There's still the Continuous auto-focus that needs to be updated. This FW update is specifically for C500 & 300 and only mentions that the C100 will receive that function as well.

At least they are doing firmware updates. The C100 hasn't been out for long. Hopefully this is the start of more juicy updates for the C100.

Shifting Display Location during Magnified Focus Assist
That is probably #1 on my wish list and seemed a no brainer to implement considering it is available on DSLRs, so even just getting that will make an easy to use camera even easier to use.

OK, so it looks like it's not available till October. 6 months gives time to add some extra features such as the STM continuous auto focus but 50/60p won't be one of them.

I don't mind October so long as there is some implementation of 50/60p, AVCHD 2.0 or not, 1080p or not; (I think 720p is reasonable, if the C300 perhaps gets 1080p if Canon is so intent on differentiating it).

However, I am absolutely certain that Canon won't move on this unless there is some kind of organised response from C100 users, and perhaps Canon Cinema camera users in general demanding this.

During BVE last month, I spoke to a very senior Canon representative who told me he was there specifically for feedback and reported to Canon Japan, that we desperately needed manoeuvrable magnification due to the rule of thirds and what not. He responded to our conversation with an email a few weeks later confirming that he had passed on the feedback, but that he wasn't promising anything. Obviously that was addressed today.

Slow motion is not a gimmick; it is a storytelling device. The motto for the EOS Cinema line is "Leave No Story Untold". Further, they said in their press release: " The upgrades are the latest to be developed in response to feedback from imaging professionals, demonstrating Canon’s continued commitment to supporting the needs of the professional video community." This is a need, and I feel they need to be informed of it, formally.

We C100 users need to act to do this, perhaps in collusion with C300 users, so that everyone has at least some kind of slow motion option. Perhaps a petition? Does anyone have other suggestions? (Apologies if this is a ridiculous idea, but I don't feel it is).

One last point: The back end of the C100 seems to have been lifted directly from the XA10, and that camera does not have 50/60p options as far as I am aware. Therefore, I don't think it was an intentional omission from Canon. We just need to convince them that the extra work it would take for them to implement this would be worth it in monetary terms to them. And it would: for me at least, it would prevent me purchasing, say, an FS700 instead of another C100 as a B-cam.

Thoughts?

Even the XF300 doesn't have 60p. It's my understanding the DigicDVIII does not support it. I think we'll have to wait for the next generation DigicDV processor for that.

I believe both XF100 and XF300 have it. Under their specifications, Canon lists it under 'Recording frame rate' and then again under 'Slow/Fast motion'. Up to 50fps in 720p for the PAL versions.

Sorry, I was referring to 1080/60p. Yes, 720/60p is there and the C300 already has that. I doubt Canon will make 720/60p available on the C100. No matter how loud we scream, their answer will probably be, "Thank you for your interest. Please consider the C300."

I fear you're right...

For the many of us that have a C100 who require a second camera body, it's highly likely Canon will lose our custom for that second camera to something like an FS100/700 or even a GH3, and perhaps even more with NAB in a few days. A C300 wouldn't make sense as it is significantly more expensive (notwithstanding the new $2000 price drop) than a combination of a C100 and any of those aforementioned cameras.

That leverage is all I'm counting on to make a formal case with Canon that makes sense from their point of view.
