NO Help Here!!!

Well, I'm very disappointed in this group and cannot see any reason to come back for help again
after the dismal response to my question regarding audio a few days ago. I asked twice for help
and there were over 150 views - 1 response. I guess you all are too busy to share a little bit of
your knowledge!

Did you take in to consideration that the folks who viewed the thread may not have the knowledge to answer your question? Or perhaps it's been answered to death and your sense of entitlement has put People off. Most members are pretty helpful around here, I know I try to answer questions when I have the knowledge to do so, as many others here do. I will say this, the forum is give and take based on a volunteer system. You can't get pissed off if no one answers your questions, it's not like this is askville or something, so pounding your fist will get you know where. My advice would be to search the forum for the answer, you'll be surprised at what you find. It's just that many people can't be bothered to do the search themselves. (not saying this is the case with you)

Also, two days ago was Easter. Some folks may have been skimming, but probably didn't have time to answer as they had family obligations.

Plus, it's only been two days.

Yes, and apart from Easter, I have noticed a massive drop off in contributions and attendance on this , and the AC160 site. Both used to be vibrant but as the cameras are now long in the tooth, there are fewer new users, and I guess some existing users have moved on. Shame really as both cameras are as great as they ever were.

Joe,
The fact is that the reason this place is so fantastic is because there are a ton of SERIOUS PROs with SERIOUS KNOWLEDGE who visit here. But think about that for a minute - if they really are PROs then that means they are BUSY. Busy out there doing their craft. Some only check in once a month or so.

This is not a manufacturer's forum, this is just folks like you and me who check in when we can and offer help IF and when we can.

Keep all that in mind when you come here and I think you'll see that this is one of the best if not THE best video related forum in the English speaking world.

This site is as good as it gets for indie shooters who are looking for a place where one can discuss video gear. Throw in "Panasonic AF-100 forum" into google and see what comes up... you'll see that dvxuser.com is the most comprehensive site - other noteworthy sites are creativecow and some blogs like Philip Blooms site. But look to see where there are most posts... dvxuser. And this is true for many cameras and other film-related gear.

So, I can understand that you are not happy to get so few replies, but it is what it is - and you won't get better. Therefore getting angry at what is the best site is not going to get you anywhere. You can leave... but where are you going to go? It'll be even worse elsewhere. You just have to swallow your frustration and try again.

I sometimes ask a question and get zero answers. But I don't get angry (of course, I'm sad/disappointed), because I realize that's just not a question that either interests people or has an easy answer, so too bad. Gotta live with it. I'm old enough to remember the time before there even was an active internet... boy was getting information hard back then! In comparison, we're living in an informational paradise.

Chalk it up to "that's how life is", and move on. Or try asking again, maybe someone who knows might answer because they were away and only now see the question. Best of luck!

You are one ungrateful and impatient person Joe. You asked questions and got a lot of helpful answers. Then Easter comes along and one of your posts gets ignored and you immediately grip about it and say you receive NO help!!! Seesh. I'd say we won't mind if you leave with that attitude.

Regarding your audio question, you didn't provide enough info to help. How are the audio switches set?

Some posts have been made in the offending thread. Might get the OP started in the right direction. A lot of stuff came up in google as well. Most problems are common and recurrent so google is a good first place when you are having technical issues getting simple things to work.

You need to check the Sony section. That's where the real ACTION is.

Joe, I don't visit the AF100 forum that often, but I do have over 45 years experience working with audio. 35 years professionally.

Here is the deal.... You didn't provide enough information to give a real answer.

Sure I could go down a list of possibilities, but it is your job to provide the list.

Things like audio settings on your camera, the microphones you are using, wireless or wired, you get the idea.

Take a breath, have a cup of coffee, then come back with the info we need, and I bet someone here will be able to help with your issue.

All the best!

Dave

So sorry guys if I came across as an angry SOB; not the case, but just frustrated with my situation and the absence of input from the forum. I've been a member of this forum for a while now and although I haven't had the opportunity to share much with my limited knowledge of the AF100, I certainly have been impressed with the friendly and helpful manner in which everyone exchanges information of all kinds. Per request here is some more details relating to my problem. Lav wired mics. Plugged into XLR Inputs 1 & 2 and set to MIC. Input 1 & 2 switched to ON. The Input 1 mic works with Ch1 SEL INPUT 1 selected and CH2 SEC on either setting. The Input 2 mic does not work. On the other hand, Input 2 mic works with everything above still the same except that CH1 SEL INPUT 2 is selected. Now Input 1 mic is silent. At no time am I able to figure out how to set it up where both mics are working at the same time which is what I'd like to have happen. Or is this not possible without a outside audio mixer of some kind. I've looked through Barry Green's book but could not find an answer. I hope this description is adequate for you to offer any advice you all may have.
Thanks, Joe

Do you have the most current firmware running in your camera? You may have read yesterday from the link provided that there were audio issues with early firmware.

I haven't updated the firmware in a while Andrew so I take a look. So that said, do you believe I should normally be able to get both wired lav mics to work simultaneously?

Yes, you can record two mics on separate channels simultaneously.

What you've said so far shows that both mics work (I'm assuming you didn't switch mics in the above test). To help debug this let's look for the obvious first.
Is the volume up on 2? Just checking.
Does Ch2 work with the internal mic?

It sounds like you're not getting anything from CH2, ever... if you set CH2 to internal mic - INT(R), crank level on CH2, and tap the on-body mic, can you hear it or see levels? Is the sound not recording, or simply not heard through monitors?

Try this: Menu > AV IN/OUT SETUP > AUDIO OUT > select "CH1/CH2" Having either other option selected means that only CH1 or CH2 will output to headphones/monitors (you may have "CH1" selected in this menu)

I use two wired mics all the time, and unless I make a mistake like having no power to the mic or a recording level set too low, I've never had a problem with one input not working. I'd suspect the above is the issue (a similar setup has confuzzled me on Sony cams before)

Hey Paul, I did not switch mics; they have remained plugged into their own line. Yes volume is at 4 and Ch 2 works with the internal mic.

I always run a shotgun and a lav so yes 2 channels work. If you select channel 1 and channel 2 to the top internal setting and snap your fingers do both meters pop? If yes, then if you select Ch. 1 to input 1 and Ch. 2 to input 2 with each mic plugged in do you get both to work? You only need +48 on if your lavs are not battery powered. And the xlr should be on mic not line. Does that help?

You Nailed it Mcbob. The menu AUDIO OUT was set to CH1. Once changed to CH!/CH2 both mics worked fine. I looked though the menus and somehow missed this.
Thank you very much!
