No audio playback on XH-A1

I have a Canon XH-A1. The standard mic was damaged, so I have been using an external XLR mic. I have the XLR plugged into CH1 and the XLR attachment option is turned on. It's also set on "MIC" instead of "LINE". When recording the CH1 audio meter is showing it's picking up sound. Even when I play the tape back on the camera the audio meter shows audio data, yet no sound plays. After I transfer to my PC, the video files have no audio. What am I doing wrong here?

Does it show its picking up audio when recording? There is no audio when playing back in the camera itself also?

I dont know, if it shows signal like you say, it should be picking up audio, very strange to say the least. did you make sure your attenuation is off. or make sure the phantom power is on if your using a mic with no battery? im just thinking out loud, but I will go take a look at mine to see if I can figure anything out.

if it shows its picking up white noise, but its not on the playback, its possible there may be a componant not functioning properly in the camera.

it showed it was picking up audio when recording. when the subject would get closer the audio levels would rise. when u play it back on the camera there is no audio, but the audio level meter fluctuates, which to me shows there is audio data on the tape.

I doubt that there's no audio data on the tape if the meters are fluctuating during playback. Have you tried playing back on another camera?
