No 4K for the FS700 till Summer 2013

The AJA Ki Pro Quad features 4x 3G SDI inputs. You may elect to use a single SDI input, two of the SDI inputs or all four of the SDI inputs. Selecting the inputs would depend upon the type of SDI output used by the camera; 1.485Gbps or 3G, single link, dual link or quad link. While we cannot definitively say at this time, it may be possible to interface the Sony NEX-FS700 with the AJA Ki Pro Quad in the future.

Also, as a point of reference, the interface to the Canon C500 is via a single 3G SDI connection and supports a raster size up to 4096x2160 and a frame rate up to 29.97 fps.

I hope this clarification is helpful. You can learn more about the AJA Ki Pro Quad at the AJA website here:

If this is true then that is great, but no where do I see any mention of 3G SDI single link.

If the Scarlet really is only going to be $8K, Sony needs to step up the FS700 a bit with a firmware / codec update to make it more enticing. Hopefully Sony doesn't think the FS700 is old news since it's a whopping 4 months old.

Sony reveals development of a 4K RAW recording interface unit for the NEX-FS700E with the AXS-R5
The NEX-FS700 will be further enhanced with a clear migration path to 4K RAW acquisition via the addition of a new interface unit

Basingstoke, 30 October 2012 – Sony is at an advanced stage of developing the HXR-IFR5 interface unit, allowing the Full-HD Super Slow Motion NEX-FS700E camcorder to capture stunning 4K RAW movie footage with the AXS-R5 RAW recorder.

The NEX-FS700E camcorder features a state of the art 4K Super 35 “Exmor” CMOS sensor (total 11.6 million pixels). With an optional firmware upgrade, the NEX-FS700E will output 4K bitstream data over 3G HD-SDI. The HXR-IFR5 interface unit has a 3G HD-SDI input and will transfer the 4K RAW data to record onto the Access Memory Card in the AXS-R5 Recorder.
The 4K RAW format output by the NEX-FS700E is 4096 x 2160 pixel resolution and the available frame rates are 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p and 59.94p. After recording the 4K RAW data onto the Access Memory Card, the workflow will be the same as the newly announced PMW-F5.

The HXR-IFR5 and the NEX-FS700E’s optional firmware upgrade are planned to be available between April and June 2013 and will bring the possibility of 4K RAW acquisition to a wider range of users than ever before.

Did anyone see this from the sony website.

Yes so you need the OPTIONAL firmware upgrade $$$ then the HXR-IFR5 interface module $$$$ and then finally, the AXS-R5 $$$$$$$.

What a joke.

LMAO - I think Sony won't be charging us FS700 owner a leg an a arm for the 4k interface Module after RED has just drop the bombshell on Sony.

i dont need 4k for 20 000 usd extra....., - i would prefer an extra more Heavier codec on board and 10-12 bit out of 3g sdi....... then i would say its a cam for most scenarios i can think of.....

Except now after REDs new pricing you can buy a Scarlet for less than a fully outfitted FS700 (speculative)

the only problem is that at that moment i need compact codec more often.... so red is not good for me as it does not give me small size files. the only perfect cam for me currently is - c500. as i can get good 50mb 4:2:2, but also raw. F5 seems like the 1 i could use.....

too bad we still dont know 100% whats it will be with f700 - its just fits better into my budget,-

Yes but wouldn't you want the luxury of being able to use WHATEVER codec you want? What if you want to make money with your rig and CLIENT A wants ProRes and CLIENT B wants DNxHD and CLIENT C wants... . .

Point is you can shoot the absolute best and highest quality in-camera, and leave the codec stuff as flexible depending on your needs which might evolve over time. (and you can rent it when or if you need it)

Lastly the codec in the FS700 is nothing to brag about. AVCHD 8-bit 420 limits its uses, and to get better like 50mbps 10-bit 422 you're looking at an external recorder anyway? Just slap that recorder on your Scarlet and you're good to go - PLUS you can record to RAW SSD and ext. device at the same time so right away you've got high quality editable proxy files.

That is not true ;)! Scarlet Brain Only sells for the same price as FS700 does but full package of the scarlet will cost about 14-15k. Hopefully RAW option for FS700 won't cost more than 8k. Will see what Sony does. Hopefully they didn't forget about FS700 users.

For me, I don't really need 4K RAW. I'd be happier with a better internal codec and if they could do a resolution bump maybe to 2.5K internally for a bit of re-cropping (non-RAW), I would be over the moon and a happy Sony customer. Not sure if either will happen

I will jump over the moon with you...freakin BMC does 2k for $3000 and FS7000 cant!

right and for some Mystery reason able to capture RAW internally on ssd HDD what is cheap, not like crazy expansive sony cards

Hi Jon,

Doing some further reading I understand that the FS700 is bayer sensor and it is possible to send bayer signal 12-bit RAW over 3G single link, if AJA QUAD has 3G in, can you please let us know if they will work together?

Thanks,

+1 Although i assume the answer will be 'don't know, depends what sony does with a firmware update'

The RAW would be 4096x2560 series of 12 bit pixels, the F5/F55 outs have some kind of mild compression on. I just suspect it's too early to say. You'd be looking April time to get any decent information. Sony haven't even set prices on all this new stuff yet.

cheers

Hi,

I had a little chat at AJA booth last IBC concerning the Ki PRO Quad.

The recorder indeed has a 4K 3G-SDI RAW input that already works with the C500, however it doesn't record RAW natively, it debayer the RAW signal then encode it (10 bit 444 or 422 prores or dnxhd).

The interesting point is that AJA worked with Canon to have all the technical infos needed to manage the RAW data coming from the camera.

AJA just needs Sony support to know how the RAW data will be implemented and ouputed from the FS700 but technically it seems to be possible.

As I posted originally in this thread: while we cannot definitively say at this time, it may be possible to interface the Sony NEX-FS700 with the AJA Ki Pro Quad in the future.

One important thing to keep in mind, as alluded to in S. Blanchardon's post: RAW is different between manufacturers. Unlike baseband video specifications, which may be defined by SMPTE specs, RAW is up to each manufacturer as to how they choose to implement it and also whether third parties have access to the RAW signal for encoding, debayering, etc.

Without violating NDAs, I can only say that AJA has historically collaborated with Sony: we were one of the first companies to support 1080p 50 and 1080p 59.94 with our desktop products, we were one of the first companies to provide support for Sony HDMI timecode with the Ki Pro Mini product, etc.

Please expect delays in any additional replies; boarding a flight.

I hope this information is helpful,

Mr. Jon Thorn could u plz verify if ki pro Quad has 3G HD SDI inputs on board? as in specifications i see only SDI ! but also is it 10 bit max recorder or 12 bit? again in specifications i saw only 10bit!

regards

As noted in my original post to this thread, post #38, the AJA Ki Pro Quad features 4x 3G SDI inputs. You may elect to use a single SDI input, two of the SDI inputs or all four of the SDI inputs. The AJA Ki Pro Quad product page on the AJA website denotes "Preliminary features" since the product is not yet released. Just prior to a product release (and you will notice for all currently released products), we provide an additional "Tech Specs" page that details various
specifications of a product; I think this may be where some confusion is coming from. The basic text in the currently provided "Overview>Preliminary features" section of the website does not denote the specifics of 3G, supported SMPTE specs, etc.

The AJA Ki Pro Quad is capable of receiving an 8-bit, 10-bit or 12-bit signal, but the processing, encoding and output are performed at 10-bit.

I hope this information is helpful,

Sony has stated that the FS700 will require a firmware update and the HXR-IFR5 to work with their AXS-R5 4K recorder. I for one am hoping that the HXR-IFR5 will not be required to work with the Ki Pro Quad. The size and price point make it a great companion to the FS700 and will be first on my shopping list when the FS700 will work with it.
