NLE not recognizing my HVX

Ive done this thousands of times but today my SpeedEdit NLE is not allowing me to capture DV footage from my HVX.

It's as if the camera is not even hooked up... but it is. The capture screen opens but when I hit "refresh" I get nothing.

Any thoughts on how to fix or is there a setting I have forgot?

I need a few suggestions... just bought a new firewire cable and still no connection recognized between camera and computer.

is there a camera setting I'm forgetting about?

It almost sounds to me like a blown firewire port on the camera. Did you have everything off before you plugged the cable into the computer and camera? You didn't accidentally plug the 6-pin end of the firewire cable upside down? Have you tested the firewire port on the computer with another device? Have you tried the camera on another computer?

I hooked up a hard drive to the tower and the HDD did not connect either. I think it may be the Tower's firewire ports... there's three of them, and none of them work.

I'm going to run a test on the camera port in a bit

I just hooked up the camera to an external hard drive and the camera port works.

Can all three ports on my tower go out at once?

Did you check the device manager in the computer to see if there was a red x on the firewire controller? What OS are you using? Is the firewire built in the motherboard or is it an add on card?

I didn't check the device manager... not sure how to do that. I am running Windows Vista.

Just returned from best buy. they changed the firewire port... still no luck. Good news is they will refund the money

I'm reading articles about Vista and FireWire and how they're incompatible all of a sudden...

What's the camera set up again? Maybe Im missing something on the camera end... The ports are good on camera and computer... cable is new.

There's no logic to this unless I accidentally changed a setting on the camera.

Thanks

Just to verify: I am capturing from DV tape as this is how the event was recorded.

Camera is switched to VCR Dub mode... then I switch to "play back"mode using that circular button

I don't see the PC/1394 option in "other functions" while in this mode... Is it somewhere else, or called something else perhaps...

Turn camera on, go to camera menu, scroll down to #8which is card function, scroll down for next page #9 other functions

Seems like my gateway does not have IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers in Device Manager section. For some reason it has disappeared. Any solutions? Can I download drivers and reinstall the device driver for firewire?

At wits end... what to do? No firewire on my computer so no capturing footage...

unfortunately I am responsible for editing an important memorial service which was filmed two days ago...

Why did this happen??? Can someone help? There must be a reason for this computer breakdown and why my Gateway which is running Vista no longer has FireWire devices installed or even recognizes HVX or ANY OTHER FireWire device....

I'm all over the internet looking for solutions and so far nothing....

Sorry you are having difficulty. Not wanting to beat a dead horse, but this is the reason I have only used Macs. In a word, reliability. Maybe it came from working in news. The process does not matter as long as it works. I can honestly say that I've had no major problems since I began using Macs in 1990. Drive failures, yes, otherwise the equipment worked as advertised. Newer faster machines, better software, true. The stuff works better now. I know PC users generally don't believe this, and that is their privilege. The main complaint about Macs seems to be cost. Lost jobs, angry customers, missed deadlines mean added costs that don't show up when computer shopping. My suggestion is as soon as you can afford it, get a Mac.

USB for Windows, Firewire for Mac in general. Onlocation uses Firewire, both for DV and Dvcpro 100. Having to have the camera connected to install the USB driver
was a surprise at first.

seeing as firewire totally crapped out on me I switched to USB. I can capture video into NLE but the footage plays back super stretched.

Original footage was recorded on mini DV tape on HVX so it is native 16:9. When combined with 16:9 playback footage appears horizontally double stretched

any way around this... can I convert to normal appearance once footage is captured

UGH... the problems :(

I use PP cs3 and there is a dialog where you interpret individual files before loading them into the time line. In this dialog you can choose the aspect ratio of the pixel.
For example 1920 x 1080 aspect = 1. dvcpro 100, or 1280 x 1080 = 1.5 Sounds like you have too low a pixel aspect ratio for your footage.
