Ninja's on Ebay.

Yes, your missing the fact that the ki pro will accept and record 10-bit, which is vastly more noticeable and advantageous under heavy grading over the difference of 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 when your source is a decent sensor putting out 10-bit with a solid signal to noise ratio. With your af100 however no, you are not missing anything, as I believe it's sdi port is 8-bit only

I am I missing something here? What camera outputs 10bit out of the HDMI port?

Wonder what the Samurai will cost? I love the looks of this thing but need my HDMI out for monitoring (24 or 32" LCD). Anyone know of a HD-SDI to HDMI converter for less than $490? Or a decent sized monitor with SDI in that doesn't cost a fortune?

The HDMI spec is certainly able carry the 10 bit data. Not sure which cameras at the moment are delivering that. I know the F3 customers are trying to find out. Instead of using a hd-sdi convertor, just use a HDMI splitter which you can get for around $50. Even smallHD sells one (60 bucks). I'm certain Ninja records in native 24p.

Yep!

That's what I'm gonna do. :)

I had considered a splitter, but worried that it might somehow degrade or make less reliable the video going into the Ninja--not to worry?

Editman uses one. Perhaps he can give his opinion. I would think the binary is binary but it's a valid question.

The hdmi is 60i only on the af100 (and all cameras I believe) In 24p, it has pulldown. 24psf only comes out the hdsdi. Does it remove pulldown on the fly? They don't mention any pulldown removal

Timecode also does not come out the hdmi

I'm also a little worried about a touch screen instead of physical buttons. Seems like it has more room to fail and you could accidentally trigger it.

Not saying the ninja wont be great, but really, the extra $1000 would be well spent on a ki pro mini . It also has ins and outs and hdsdi-hdmi conversion I believe. Aja is also a well known reputable company while Atomos is brand new. In interested in what they have in store for the Samurai, however

I was thinking the same thing for awhile, that the extra $1k would be money well spent on the Ki Pro Mini. However the Ninja is much cheaper because it comes with it's own batteries and a charger. Also the ability to record to a hard drive vs expensive CF cards is another huge factor. I like the idea of archiving to inexpensive hard drives too. For $995 shipped it even comes with a 500 gig hard drive. So basically the Ki Pro Mini is closer to $2K more after you factor in powering it and buying fast CF cards.

Just something to keep in mind and some of the reasons why I finally pulled the trigger on the Ninja today.

The Ninja really does seem like a great value. Hell even if you just consider the value of having two copies of your footage it's easily worth $995.

It is my understanding that the Ninja will not record automatically when the camera rolls, so to get dual recording you will have hit record on the camera and the Ninja.
