C100: NINJA2 problems

Just did an interview today with C100 and NINJA2.
Two times during the interview, the NINJA froze, and the red bars disappeared. I had to shut everything down and start again, interrupting the interview. Thankfully, the SD card recorded the segment that was lost.

I'm using the Pearstone HMI cable, non-locking.
Is that where the weak link is?

It does not make me comfortable using this camera knowing this could happen anytime.

Does anyone have similar experience, fixes, advice?

Thanks

Are you using the latest firmware and certified harddrie/SSD?

It's better to post your problem on the Atomos official forum.

even if its brand new, doesnt mean it has the latest firmware, maybe the distributor has stocked this for 2 years or so.

check your firmware first

Brand new ninja
Didn't you run tests before bringing it to a shoot?
Don´t want to be a smarta** here, but if you ask for "fixes and advice", the most obvious would be: Test your setup and get familiar with it ;)
Glad for you you had the SD recording as backup.

It's kinda part of this forum that people come in here and ask others for help. So if you can't help, how about stay out of the conversation....

I have been running my Ninja 2 with an FS100 for about six months and not had any problems. But upon seeing your post I checked and my firmware(the one it came with) was out of date and I am now upgrading. I have to say that I own two Ninjas an original as well as the ninja 2 and they have never let me down or balked so I would check with support at Atomos who have been excellent with me. I do admit to having given them a hard time when the Ninja one would not trigger from TC or Lanc but I found a workaround and then got a Ninja 2. I have been using a variety of HDMI cables and recently the super thin ones which work very well and they are not locking.

Thanks for all the help and advice, all!

Turns out my firmware is not quite up to date.
And it seems the fixes in the latest have to do with DNxHD, which is what I was using.

Hopefully, that will fix it.
Spartacus, you are totally right, I should know better. Sometimes life presents you with less-than-ideal timeframes.
And dustylens, thanks for the permission to ask a question (without having used "best practices").

You do see the irony, since you basically do the same thing you`re accusing me of...?

@Danny1280.
You seem to have taken my post as it was intended, thanks ;)
But just to clarify:
Even if my post was "pointing out the obvious", I did so, because people doing this with me has helped me in my career.
Sometimes you just have to hear from someone else, to trust your own judgement.
DVXuser never was just about "go to the sub menu and press EF-S mode" advice, but about people sharing thoughts and experiences - and sometimes stating the obvious.

Soooo:

:cheesy:

All the best to you and your projects!

Brand new ninja with Sandisk extreme 240 SSD.

I had major problems recently with a Sandisk Extreme SSD in a Windows 8 laptop. It would constantly freeze and stall and became unusable. I tried firmware and reinstalling the OS but to no avail. I replaced it with a Crucial M4 and haven't had any issues since. I searched a lot of forums about the Sandisk SSDs and some said they use an inferior bridge which causes problems. This could be why your Ninja freezes...

One thing I am noticing about nearly all recording media these days is that you probably will be faced with an error, lost media, corrupt card at some point. That is why for critical jobs I am starting to dual record everything. I think it is becoming a standard format to dual record, just to be able to hand off one original and keep the other until everything has been confirmed. Cameras that dual record are much preferred in my opinion. That or having an on board recorder as well. Proven out in this thread that the OP had a backup recording.

@ Spartucus

Read your first post again. Then read everyone else's.

I was interested in what everyone had to say because I will be having a Ninja soon. I read these forums as preventative education. Now jump around to other threads on DVX and look for the common trend. You will see threads of "look what I did with my camera" and the second post will usually be, "Nice! WHAT SETTINGS DID YOU USE"? That and you will see, "I just got this piece of gear and am having issues". And awesome poeple jump in and try to help that user. It IS kinda the whole point of DXVuser.

Now imagine if every response was like your first contribution to this thread??????

NOW TAKE A LOOK at the OP's last sentence in his first post and again read everyones comments (INPUT) then read yours again.

TO the OP..
Glad you got it sorted out and I'm happy the users that have the Ninja helped you "discover" the issue you were having....

I had this problem as well, I'm glad you seemed to have solved it. I have the same exact setup as you, with the same SSD. It turned out the problem was the Pearstone HDMI cable. I went out and bought a nice cable that had a 90 degree bend to the lead and it has never happened again. But yeah, I was having the same exact issues... Ninja would just stop recording, and sometimes it would just lose the connection with the camera altogether.
