C100: Ninja2 10-bit 4:2:2 vs Odyssey7 8-bit 4:2:2

If I've read the specs correctly, the new Odyssey7 will only record 8-bit 4:2:2 via HDMI, which is unfortunate for us lowly C100 users. The plus side is you get an excellent 7.7" monitor. However, the Ninja2 will record 10-bit 4:2:2 via HDMI - but with a smaller screen.

What sort of differences would be experienced using one verses the other? What would you do? Get the Ninja2 and a separate field monitor or get the Odyssey7?

I have both and have hooked both to C100...
the screens are no comparison. atomos screens are junk, but priced accordingly.

The other issue is that Odyssey only does DPX files (overkill for most users, especially at 8-bit).
C100'also will not trigger Odyssey recorder w/o additional hardware.

Depends on what you want/need.

It goes without saying, uncompressed files on Odyssey are the best you can get, if you can take the post hit.

I thought the C100 outputs an 8bit signal through HDMi? I read that somewhere. Can someone confirm?

i think the Atomos Samurai Blade would be a more realistic option for the C100 having a better screen than the Ninja 2. The Odyssey is nice but overkill for C100 use IMHO.

This is Atomos' info on their website about recording 10-bit from 8-bit sources:

So why record 10-bit from the sensor of a camera, if it's 8-bit? Well, if you want to edit, use CG or 3D effects, green screen or add titles and transitions, these will all be 12-bit or more. If you record 8-bit like most cameras, when the 12-bit or higher graphic is inserted into the timeline, the colours are 'crushed' down to 8-bit, making the result extremely poor quality. We bypass the 8-bit and record 10-bit colour registries to ensure your video plays nicely with all computer effects.

What's that about? Is that just sales jargon? Or is it really beneficial to record 10-bit from 8-bit?

Sounds as though its saying any graphics / CG you create get 'crushed' to 8-bit. So if you record 10-bit (from the 8-bit source), your CG / graphics only get 'crushed' to 10-bit, not 8-bit.
But if your footage is only 8-bit, they'll all match anyway.
Sounds like sales stuff to me.

so if looking for an external recorder and a monitor the odyssey7 (NOT 7Q) seems like a better choice over the atomos ninja and a separate monitor?

The Odyssey line is really nice but you have to think about how you will use it and how much future proofing you want to do. Heck if you only used it as a monitor it's still a good value. The only downside to me with the Odyssey & C100 is it wont trigger record so you need to do this manually. I cant remember if the SDI on the C300 does trigger the Odyssey but I think it does.

Sorry, why not use a Samurai? It seems as if it is a better value than the Odyssey. I can't seem to find out if it supports Canon C-Log (it does support Sony S-Log). I also can't figure out if it supports take flagging for Premiere. It only says FCPX so I assume that's it.

I use samurai blade...very nice monitor, triggering ok, C-log supported with the ability to display a 709ish picture...

With the Atomos H2S hooked up in the battery plate and a very small bnc cable, its not bulkier as a ninja.

You got record trigger to work with the C100?

yep. it's creating randomly some 1 frame clips (must be the H2S) but it's not that annoying. And getting the benefit of triggering (which is so useful !) makes me forget about it..

I guess the only drawback for me about the blade is I was wanting more of a 7" monitor opposed to just the 5". Especially since it's at the same price point as the Odyssey7 - triggering would be the only thing gained, correct?

EDIT: I just read the above post stating if you convert HDMI to SDI with the Odyssey it will trigger. So what's the pros of the Samurai Blade over the Odyssey7?

Smaller footprint. You can buy it now. Records to both Avid DNXHD and ProRes. Cheaper and easier to find media.
Who know when the Odessey7 will ever record to both of those codecs.

Unlike the Blade, the Odyssey7 does not record - its just a monitor.

EDIT: Apologies, the first site I looked at didn't mention recording functions!

I don't know where you are but here in France the blade is 200€ less that the 7Q....
plus, getting generic SSDs is easier and cheaper, easy to replace, easy to give to an editor after a shoot...

They're the same price here in the US, but the Odyssey isn't going to be available till the end of March (maybe). That shouldn't be a problem for me though, I'm not planning to buy until after that anyway.
