Ninja playback looks blocky!

Hi guys,

Just received my 101 with the Ninja. When I have recorded a clip on the Ninja and playing it back, I see a terrible 'blocky' screen. looks like an offline resolution while recording in the highest mode!

What's wrong with the Ninja. It says 1080/50i as input, and I see a clear view in monitor mode. But when I play it back...

Anyone has a solution?

My Ninja has a 160 GB SSD Intel drive.

The Panasonic is great!!

Playback on unit or once it was on your computer? Playback on ninja screen is only proxy resolution at the moment.

Thanks guys. I haven't ingested in FCP yet. I presumed that the unit would give a normal playback itself. How else can you check the recorded material (if you just record on the Ninja and not on the Panasonic)?

I am sure it like the playback on the Nexto 2500 backup system - the picture is just to give you proof that you have a file that is ok. Until playback is made on a broadcast standard monitor correctly set up is is impossible to make judgements on picture quality with any kit. IMHO.

Well, go ingest it and get back to us with your results.

Could you possibly ingest it into FCP, or at least copy it to your Mac and play it with the QT Pro player and see if the footage is intact?

That would eliminate the concern about whether the video was recorded incorrectly, and direct the question to playback issues

Its been said by Atomos that the current preview mode on the ninja is low res only. A future update will fix it. This will be fine once you hit your NLE.

Absolutely right. We had some unexpected issues that we had to fix before shipping the Ninja, which meant that we didn't have time to completely finish playback, and had to leave it in "preview" mode, instead of the full-res playback that it is capable of. We'll be bringing this update with version 1.1. I know it's inconvenient but we took the view that since it doesn't affect in any way the quality of the recorded material (which you can see from comments on this forum that people are pretty pleased with) we should ship the unit anyway. It's inconvenient, I know, but rest assured that it will be fixed pretty soon. BTW - we put a note with each Ninja explaining this. I'm sorry if you didn't get one.

Hello Dave,

Indeed I've never seen any explanation about the low-res playback. Not on the internet, not in the Ninja-case. Anyway, I am pleased with your reply and hope the update's coming soon. Thanks!

Hey David I want to buy a Ninja , but I have a question, I see on this link http://www.quora.com/When-will-the-Atomos-Ninja-ship that The footage appears in Final Cut Pro as 1080i
possible course the HDMI output on the AF100 doen not support 1080p witch I like to record. Is that means the Ninja is not a good deal for me?
AF100 only supports 1080p on the SDI output. Does it make a difference for recording 1080p on the ninja course I really would like to have it comming in Apple Pro res HQ 4.2.2 10bit 1080p

I don't own the Ninja but I think I can answer this question. The HDMI stream being output from the AF100 (and almost all video cameras) is 60i. When recording 24p through HDMI, from the camera, there is pulldown added to it to make it 60i. The footage recorded to the Ninja is 1080i. If you want the footage to be 1080p 24fps, you must de-interlace it. On a mac, Cinema Tools can do this. The NInja does not have the processing power to deinterlace on the fly, and perhaps Panasonic may find a way to send just a progressive stream out the HDMI in the future. Essentially, the Ninja will record anything that's inputed up to 30p or 60i.

Hey Bugundu,

Just cheking out the Atomos products I think I make a better deal for that waiting for the 'Samurai' instead cours it records on 1080p and it has SDI input.
The AF100 supports 1080p on its SDI output so that could make a match.
I realy dont want to deinterlace footage course that sucks a lot and is extra work to do.

I am reviewing the Ninja as we speak using the AF101, I also record 720 50p and it works a dream. I bought the 160GB SSD Intel drive because I am happier with solid state these days. So far I have discovered that the Ninja has a LANC loop through but this does not seem to work with the Panasonic AF101 but might be a future firmware upgrade. The LANC works with our Sony MC50 and if you press the remote S/S on the tripod handle it starts both the Ninja and the MC50.
